  1. Women eh? Always wanting the expensive rings. I woulda taken an engagement tortoise!
  2. I once discovered an oily substance on the surface of the water in the tank. I somehow came to the conclusion that the oily substance was moisturiser that had come off my arms, which I had applied that morninng or sometime before doing maintenance. It was the only thing I could think of that could have happened. No fish died though. I got rid of it by just holding a small container on its side just below the surface and let the water at the surface flow in capturing most of the slick.
  3. Sort of on the same subject I've heard before that wood lowers the pH. By how much?? Because I have a reasonably large piece of driftwood in my tank that has been there for the best part of 2 years and the pH is always about 7.4... and it comes out of the tap at 6.8-7.0
  4. More neons would be good, since they prefer to be in schools and it is cool when they do actually school together. What kind of shark exactly?
  5. Cute! I love how he gives his brother a wide berth hehe. One of my girls is nearly 3 years old and she still loves playing with those little furry mice toys. And she even knows whats going on when I say "Mousey" ears perk up, eyes go wide. Its mousey time!
  6. When we moved I saved as much of the water as possible from the tank in buckets with lids. It was also the first thing we moved in, that way we had heaps of room to manouvere around in the new place. I caught the fish and bagged them, 3-4 small fish to a bag, the larger fish had a bag to themselves (allow LOTS of time for catching & bagging!!) packed the bags into a large polystyrene box and filled any gaps with screwed up newspaper so they didn't move around in the box. Then I emptied the tank of as much water as I could but left the gravel and plants in, secured it to a piece of mdf to make it easier to carry and support the base. It worked well for me. It was a long process (mainly because the little buggers were hard to catch and the fact that we had to travel about 50kms to the new house) longer than I had planned but everyone survived and everything went smoothly. My tank was only a 155 litre though.. I imagine your mission will be much larger than mine!
  7. lol cute pics. Your not alone Caper, only 1 out of my 5 cats pays any attention to the fish.. and its not very often!
  8. Oh and don't forget snail control.. so.. what some clown loaches? Don't forget the prefer to be in groups of at least 6.
  9. I think he's not happy with his tank. They should totally add some more plastic plants, and one of those air operated diver thingys, and one of those sea chest decorations that opens and bubbles. He'd totally love it!
  10. I haven't had any experience with Jebo but from what I've seen they look basically the same as Aqua One. I have 2 Aqua One tanks, an AR850 and an AR620. I have plants growing in my AR850 so it can be done, just gotta find the right sort of plants and replace the bulbs. As for problems experienced the power head in the AR620 keeps crapping out for some reason, not hard to fix just need to pull the powerhead apart, give it a clean and put it back together and away it goes. IMO they are a great way to start the fish keeping hobby. One day I will progress on to a bigger tank with external filters and all that stuff but for now the Aqua One tanks just suit me fine. As lmsmith said, its probably cheaper just to go with a plain tank thats not all inclusive like the Aqua One/Jebo type but check trademe, you might be able to get a cheap second hand one. What kind of fish is it?? I did read your previous post but can't remember what kind of fish it was.
  11. Would the sponser the animal idea include the occasional picture sent to the sponsor?? Cos if I sponsored an animal I'd like to see it. You could just email them off to the sponsors. That way it wouldn't cost much. Might be time consuming though if you had lots to do though...
  12. Or Zebra Loaches (Botia Striata). I have two of these guys and they cleaned up a small infestation in my 155 litre tank in about a week. They only grow to about 10cm so suitable for a smaller tank. I did recommed these ones to you in your other thread but for some reason everyone raved about the dwarf chain. But anway.. although these were fairly small snails, and it sounds like your snails are bigger? How big? Have a look here http://www.loaches.com. That website doesn't say that dwarf chain eats snails, where as they do say that the yoyo and zebra do eat snails.
  13. Have a read of this thread: http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/dropsy-contagious-yes-no-vt15357.html It would appear the general consensus is that it is not contagious. If it is dropsy it would be best to remove as soon as possible anyway and euthanise. Fish rarely survive dropsy.
  14. Yeah.. people are apparently comparing it to Weird Science.
  15. Ok I googled: "A young man, a 16 year old kid or a 14 year old kid and his friend get their hands on this thing called the Sims Infinity Pack," Davis told Collider. "But what they realize is that they can scan their world in, because this is the most life like, real Sims game ever. And as they are playing this they are all of a sudden realizing is what they are playing on the game is having an effect on the real world," he added. "It’s wish fulfillment, and obviously it turns against them."
  16. Any Sims fans here?? I heard the oddest thing yesterday. They are planning to make a movie based on the game. Not sure how this is going to work. Anyone who plays The Sims knows they speak Simlish, their own language. Will it be subtitled, or will we have to look at the little speech/thought bubbles above their heads to dechiper what they are talking about?? I can't imagine this being a box office hit. Although I can see the potential for funny random stuff happening, such as being abducted by aliens, seeing all sorts of odd characters (star wars characters etc) hanging out downtown.. Any thoughts?
  17. I've heard about rubbing the cut side of a potato on your windscreen something about it stopping it fogging up or going hazy.. but to remove water spots?? I googled to see if I could find out how it works, but so far no luck. Can't hurt to try right??
  18. Why wouldn't they visit? There's nothing like actually visiting something for yourself, to experience it first hand rather than just gathering and analysing any data they might collect. I'm sure if humans had the technology to visit far away places they would, rather than just send a probe to scan the planet and collect information. We have no idea what kind of technologies they may have created. Just because humans can't comprehend the sort of technologies that would be required to travel the vast distances of space, doesn't mean it doesn't exist or isn't possible. On the other hand, who's to say that there were in fact aliens on board?? Perhaps it was their probe scanning the earth.
  19. I assume its the same as the AR850 which I have. Noodles go first, then white filter wool, then black sponge pad on top. Thats how I was told it goes anyway.
  20. Wow. Thanks for sharing. Wasn't so hard now was it? I think it would be foolish of us not to believe that something else existed out there. How could there not be?
  21. 23 days?? Do you live in like, the middle of nowhere? Why were you without power for so long? Sounds like you handled it well. I so could not handle 23 days without power. Well maybe I could but it would suck.
