  1. So theres no point in me getting on to kill the algae in my tank it keeps going green and annoying me.. Its only one tank and its not in direct sunlight or anything ive even given up turning the tank lights on during the day.. How do I get rid of the nutrients in the tank to get rid of the algae? I understand going UV would be treating the symptoms not the cause..
  2. alot of the males that I have seen that were brought as golden johanni are crap, well unsure if they're crap or not johanni maybe interuptus or something like that... They had dark black horizontal lines on them and just didn't look right to me which is why I steer away from them even when I needed a johanni female..
  3. There are better guru's on here.. But I think I read in a previous post that 1 would work forever in a perfect world with perfect glass and a perfect base no movement etc.. But if you bump the glass or the glass is chipped or slightly weak it wont work..
  4. I think they are all different strains of a fish so they will all breed together and you will probably just get a slit in the babies depending on what is dominant or recessive etc..
  5. lol yeah Alan that may have something to do with the erratic angles the fins take..
  6. lol personally I would be bitter if I brought fish for top dollar and got 4 out of 6 with bent fins.. I could tell as soon as the fins started to form on mine they were bent and no good
  7. lol yeah tell me about it I really wanted to set them up though would look awesome
  8. lol buy my tanks they're cool and big http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/anyone ... 19338.html And yeah 1700 x 600 x 600 is pretty big most people go 5' x 2' x 2'.. I think you need to find the safety calculator and also find out how thick the glass is this guy plans to make a tank for you out of.. A year isn't really a long time in the scheme of things even a poorly designed and built tank can last this long which is what the safety factor relates to.
  9. Stu's are pretty cool angels I saw them when I was down
  10. IMO if deformaties are noticable they should probably have been culled as soon as it shows it is a deformaty and like all deformaties should be avoided in the hobby. I know some people will think this is a bad attitude and mean and they can be used as display fish, I fully agree that some responsible owners will keep them as display fish only but alot of people will breed them and then they will be common place best to keep what little altums we have in nz pure I once bred angels and had a pair with a deformed fin (my first couple of fish I ever brought so I had no idea) and 90% of the babies were obviously deformed with bent fins etc worse than the one parent, nobody or the pet shops would take the babies so I ended up destroying them and seperating the pair and keeping them until they died. That goes for all fish but again this whole thing is written IMO and noone should take offense or get angry about it they're still beautiful fish. EDIT - for spelling mistakes
  11. Yeah id somehow go with 2-3 pieces of glass for the front with supports between each piece and along the top. If you can buy a 5ft tank relatively cheaply then you could do it I guess, the height is a problem though, just for comparasion I have a 4ft tank thats 900high and its made from 15mm glass I guess you would need somewhere around that for your tank, how did your dad go about getting his glass and what thickness did he use?

Is your filter intake near an air stone or bubbles caused by your filter outlet it could be sucking air in with the water.. Also if you look at all your joints it should be easy to see where the leak is coming from as there will be no bubbles before a leaky joint and a stream of them after.
  13. get on the damm plane??... i would if i even knew where i was going to .. i have sent pm after pm asking you whats happening even posted on the forum.. yet no reply all i need is a yes or no a time and a place and ill be there!!!

  16. lol ive kept a heap of cichlids and in all honesty the "rift lake" cichlids have been pretty laid back ive managed to keep all sorts of things in with them with great success.. Unlike when I used to keep angels! All in all they're great and my fav but as afrikan says each to their own and keep what you want.. Oh and yeah im another for no angels and Kenyi together sorry
  17. I have used it on discus one 400mg tab per 40litres... but this site recomends 100mg for every 38litres so would suggest a 400mg tab would do around 160litres http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/malawi_bloat.php I guess anywhere between would be good..
  18. lol glad to hear they've already settled so well for you!
  19. yeah thats what i was thinking about.. When everyone would say they are too different to breed... I guess everything can happen especially with africans..
  20. yeah like frenchy said if they're quite different its less likely.. But I would still try and keep pairs of each so they try and breed true.. Also the shakey thing you talk about could be dominance as one fish in a tank and then adding another it will go and try and be boss as its had the whole tank to itself..
  21. mbuna and haps? I have read that any african mouth brooder can cross breed someone had a tropheus that used to breed with mbuna. I keep them both together and I think if you provide enough females for each male then they will be ok but there are always issues. The only way to breed pure fish is to have species only tanks.
