  1. FYI http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/malawi_bloat.php
  2. might be bloat then.. you need to get some metro, I had an ice blue female with it when i changed food's and she recovered fully she even just bred again.. i just used metro one tab per 40 litres..
  3. is she looking skinny or fat? Is her anus sticking out at all? It could be bloat.
  4. lol nope have them in the same tank and have had for 2-3years on and off they love it and do really well even seem to not get white spot as much in there Can take all the pics you want to verify it for you..
  5. Yeah they're definately awesome looking fish
  6. mine look more like the Thumbi west ones... With a smaller blaze.. The ones with the big blaze look awesome though I haven't seen any around only in the pics from OOA..
  7. just mush up some organic matter in water and stick it in a warm place...
  8. I would (if you can) remove the eggs and male bristlenose to a seperate tank or trap in the tank.. Its what ive done out of my african tanks and its been fine none of the big africans have got in for a feed..
  9. There are a few types of freshwater puffer around.. I dont know about keeping them with bumblebee gobies while they're both brackish I would think the puffers would eat them..
  10. Yeah they're awesome keep them in every single tank and never lost one... Have even recently had a pair breed quite successfully (I removed the male and babies) in my big african tank with all the big malawi's swimming around.. That has argonitte substate and limestone rocks so really hard water and high ph.
  11. Yeah have thought that fish was wicked since the first time I got some off him over a year ago now hes been breeding a whole heap.. Nice and knowledgable guy too hes on the forums here also im sure he will post if he notices this

    Oxygen

If your fish are gasping then you may need it.. I have also found with no surface disturbance sometimes the water gets an oily surface on it.

    Sand??

I have a tank will pool filter sand in it I think it looks quite wicked and doesn't seem to affect the fish..
  14. Yeah I say dont give up.. I dont know the first thing about breeding them but if you've got them laying then id say your already three quarters the way there.. One thing I dont have a clue about is if 2 female discus can pair up? I know its possible with angels and other fish maybe this is the case with your ones? Also you mention movement around the tank, some fish are a bit worried when with babies so if theres heaps of action then maybe move them to somewhere a little quieter.. Also I think if you decided to stick poly over the front of the tank everytime there were people in the room it will freak them out more. How many times have your pair layed? Maybe they're just new at it and need to give it a go a few more times. Either way dont give up there are a few people on here that are really good people and breed alot of discus and im sure they will help you out.
  15. Yeah I overcrowd my africans I had probably 40-50 africans in a 260litre tank more than half of them were over 10cm's im pretty sure that blew the rule out of the water... I even had fish that shouldn't be a tank that small (fully grown bumblebee male) and everything was fine. But I did run 2 externals on it around 2000LPH total and 2 airstones going nuts the filters got clogged weekly also had huge problems with green water (even with a UV steriliser) the fish were all happy and healthy.. They were supposed to go into my 540litre tank but that got broken so they ended up in the 4ft as a holding tank I have reduced numbers a bit now as it looks like its going to be a while before I fix the 5ft could have left it as is but couldn't stand the green water lol
  16. Be careful disconnecting air even overnight.. Sometimes the fish actually rely on it and you can wake up to fish gasping at the surface and/or dead.. Ive had it happen a few times when spray bars from externals were my only source of airation and they slipped into the tank overnight.. Didn't loose any fish but it was close..
  17. I would think terracotta would be a good thing to use very similair to ceramic noodles.. And as its already been pointed out people use terrocotta caves and stuff ive got a few in my tanks... I have also used pummice in my filters which I think works well although I cant see the bacteria so I cant claim too much

    Uaru

Yeah I have seen them too and cant remember much else except cories in there.. They were certainly pretty big and impressive fish when we were there not that I had ever seen any before but they're cool Glad someones breeding them.
  19. Ive got a tiny rainbow shark in with my malawi's and he doesn't pick on anything But he was given to me because he was causing trouble in a community tank..
  20. Yeah im confused obviously you can cross strains of the same species (ie a blue with a gold 3 spot or 2 different coloured discus) but crossing 2 different types of fish altogther should be avoided..
  21. IF they're lived 14days then your obviously doing something right.. I think you can have heavy losses when they start to develop further and remember something about sealing tanks to ensure they only breath warm air but its been about 10 years since I bred them and I never managed to raise them in any substantial number which i didn't mind cuz I didn't have space for all the males..
  22. Theres quite a few businesses that sell through trademe.. Tankgirl3 and theres also another one ive noticed around here but cant remember the name..
  23. Just leave her she should be fine, but still keep an eye on her if she starts getting beaten up or wasting away (maybe holding more than a month) then you will have to take her out and strip her so she can eat again.. Obviously if you want the babies you will have to take her out to spit or to strip her..
  24. If they fish are out and about they should be sweet but if they sulking or anything like that then you might pay to difuse the outflow of the filter by pointing it into the edge of the tank or sticking a ornament or rock in front of it.. Its generally the best to have as big a filter as practical in your tank as it helps keep things stable. When I had a similair problem I just disconnected the airline from the filter at night and then stuck it back on but that depends on if you are actually needing the air in the tank..
  25. yeah they tend to make some noise if they have some sort of air connected to them sounds like a sucking noise?
