  1. A sump is a type of filter.. Basically you stick another smaller tank underneith your big tank with a pump in it.. And you fill it up with all the sorts of things you normally stick in filters and all your tank water gets pumped through it and filters your water.. There are heaps of advantages like you can hide your heaters in it, you can have a large amount of media etc etc..
  2. I think the fish look good and its cool just because its different and not what people have done from day one doesn't mean it wont work.. 20 years ago if you had told anyone keeping fish that noone would be using undergravel filters in 20years they wouldn't believe you..
  3. Just had a quick search.. here it is again http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/-vp198964.html
  4. Theres been 3 threads from memory where frenchy has shown up with all his info and convinced me not to feed my fish bloodworms.. I cant remember all the info if your interested go through or use the search function or im sure frenchy will jump on and explain it all.. I feed alot of stuff and basically africans get bloat so its just not worth the risk I know people who feed it and you obvoiusly do without any problems but yeah I dont and dont recommend others do simply because to me somethings are just not worth the risk I mean id rather not feed it than loose a whole tank of expensive fish..
  5. lol You can chase your head around for days and days and days looking up profiles on the net finding contridicting ones and never actually get anywhere I dont bother, I also dont really bother with overseas forums like cichlid-forum for feeding advice because they have food we cant get.. Just ask the advice of the people in nz keeping the fish you have. I feed my fish mainly spirilina but its mixed with about a fifth brine shrimp flake.. They also get lettuce cooked pea's and a home make food I make with shrimp, spirilina, garlic and all sorts of other good stuff in it.. And haven't had any problems so far. Oh and would like to reitterate what frenchy has said its probably not a good idea to feed bloodworms to any fish let alone africans, some people have had no bad experiences but from the general reserach around the place its not worth the risk plenty of better things to feed your fish..
  6. haha where did they come from? The wholesale list or private?
  7. Hey by any chance were the 99 yellows on the 1st of april.. I just cant believe it.. And also think its a bit rough to market the fish on trademe sort of implying that they retail for 99 when in actual fact if they did at one stage thats not a usual retail price..
  8. I can tell the difference between fryeri and red shoulder females the fryeri are longer and shaped differently.. but if you cant already tell the difference probably better not to mix them..
  9. YEah was just wondering if anyone had actually seen it.. I know i spend alot of time in petshops and never had.. who would pay it? When you can get a yellow for like $5-10 from a breeder.. Hopefully the trader is a member here and can let us know where and when they saw this!
  10. Really hard to generalise a fish as to how aggressive or not aggressive they are I guess.. Ive just read things on the forums on their who knows like I say I haven't kept them before guess you get rogue ones..
  11. YEah would hope so.. Ive always seen them for $19 to $25 in auckland... Regardless of size if you get a bigger one you get lucky..
  12. lol thats good to hear I haven't kept adult fryeri before but they're supposed to be pretty agro..
  13. An electric yellow selling for $99 in a shop? http://www.trademe.co.nz/Home-living/Pe ... 992784.htm Damn!
  14. lol but if you keep them in a tank that small when the dominant fryeri matures you will end up with one fryeri
  15. You could get away with a pair or 3 in a 2ft.. If you wanted you could just stick the single one in their would be a boring live but yeah you may get away with it Probably better to get rid of him to someone who has a bigger african tank he can go into with more of his own kind to scrap with and hopefully get lucky..
  16. Dont worry about it.. some people get all hung on about what can and cant be kept together i think you've got a mix that may work.. Obviously thats all depending on the temperment of the individual fish if its working dont worry about it just keep an eye on them as you do with all cichlids things can get nasty..
  17. Yeah you need to get metro.. I cant remember the full name for it I think its on the link hope the fish makes it like I said I cured my 2 that had it and I thought they were gonners..
  18. bit of an unorthodox mix But im always one for what works and it looks happy.. Is it picking on anyone else in the tank?
  19. YEah id go for bloat just because its with your malawi's and thats similair to what happened to me when I had bloat in my tank.. Also their is some discussion regading it being a parasite so might be best to pull the sick fish out and stick them in their own tank even with epson's salt to help relieve any swelling etc..
  20. can you take any pics? Does the fish match upto the descriptions in the link I posted?
  21. Yeah that is a reliable way.. Or else just picking out the females as they hold lol Generally you can go by black fins and good egg spots like the one in your pic I would say more likely a male but bare in mind that it could be wrong...
  22. Sorry eggspots are not 100%.. And ive seen an electric yellow with so much black in its fins and eggspots holding if i hadn't of seen it holding I would have said 100% male but now i dont even try and guess..
  23. Yeah ive read in some books they suggest to feed them to fry.. If you have to look at them under a microscope id say they will be fine..
  24. no its prescription only med's.. gotta goto the vets, unless someone on here can help I got mine off someone on here maybe someone who keeps discus or tropheus may have some as they commonly have some..
  25. when i pulled her out she was still her normal size.. pooing white stuff, breathing heavily hanging around the back of the tank and off her food for a few days..
