  1. Sorry to hear about that frenchy certainly is a bad way to go! Hope the rest of the fish are ok..
  2. They would be sweet in that tank.. However people dont recommend mixing the tangs and malawi's together, and if your brichardi pair off they will get pretty nasty probably destroying the 3rd and generally making live hell for the rest of the fish.. Yes a pair goes fine in a 2ft together but thats one pair only with no other fish.. Of course you could get all males or all female brichardi and then you would get away with it. You tank is pretty small but you can add more fish than what your planning and get away with it, bearing in mind most africans will outgrow that sized tank.. I guess you could do yellows and demasoni and your brichardi (providing they dont pair off..). Maybe a pair of peacocks or something like that too but your tank is a bit on the smaller side. Thats just my 2cents worth anyway im sure others will come on and start a discussion Good luck im sure you will enjoy them!
  3. lol yeah they do get big and impressive, I want to buy around 10 or so to grow up cuz they look so good Seems we have some nice ones floating around nz..
  4. Man what an awesome pic lol anyone on here breeding giraffes?
  5. All the giraffes I have seen in NZ are true to the pics ive seen on cichlid-forum and other pics on the net.. Bear in mind it will take a while for them to get to their full size and colouration..
  6. Yup im keen.. lol someone going to donate me 4 12-13" clown loaches just to try
  7. Awesome pics guys I think I may have to give this a go sometime.. Do most people use concrete over it to get a rocky looking finish?
  8. Yeah would love to see some pics of these fish, and see if we can confirm them as interruptus
  9. we had a product at work was called a micromesh kit came with everything to get scratches out of glass or plastic.. Or else failing that you can attempt to polish it out using braso, or contact a glass company see what they recommend good luck!
  10. lol yeah could be a reflection  I thought it looked like a female version of the pictured fish
  11. Navarre definitely said they were brought as interruptus.
  12. I find it hard to believe that the overseas wholesalers and our wholesalers/importers brought in pure interruptus as johanni without knowing? Surely if they were interruptus they would have been identified as such from the beginning? Mind you stranger things have happened. I too would like to see some pics of your fish Navarre, it would be awesome to have another pure melanachromis species in NZ! Noone here jumps on anyone else's fish just to rubbish them, were all sick of hybrids and crap fish being spread around, everyone here is trying to help and also give people what they believe to be correct ID, noone will be worried about anyone discussing that point Maybe were mistaken, or maybe you are either way we all learn and hopefully benefit from it. The pic posted looks nothing like the pictures I have seen of interruptus the whole body shape and everything looks off.. I dont know if it is the pic or anything because as ive said earlier I have never kept this fish. Maybe to end this discussion we could get some pics of Navarre's fish (assuming we have decided on the ones on this link) and link them to cichlid-forum, then we would have the opinion of 100's of cichlid fanatics who have most likely kept and bred interruptus and can make a better id?
  13. Judging by the colour vertical banding and colour of the female in the back ground (if it is the same fish) I would say some sort of melanachromis hybrid, possibly one of the type brought in as johanni.. You really need to get a clearer pic for a definate id
  14. I would think the fish and plants would be fine without both light and food for a week.. Just feed them and do a water change before you go.. If you do decide to get your neighbour to feed the fish it was suggested by someone on here Caryl (I think) to goto the $2 shop and get the labeled pill dispenser containers and stick each days food in the container for each day (hide all other food), I once got a friend to feed fish and despite me showing how much to put out he seemed to enjoy it and I found a whole container of food in the tank and dead fish when I got back..
  15. has anyone got any pics of the backgrounds they have made?
  16. I dont know if id go for pure interruptus going from the pics here http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/s ... php?id=758 but I have never seen or kept what I can guarantee are pure interruptus so I dont really have anything to compare it to and pics can be misleading, certainly looks very similar. Hopefully someone else who's actually kept these fish can shed some light on the situation, I know there have been alot of random thinks sold as johanni recently and most of them seem to colour up with vertical barring but not as many as the pic of the fish shown?
  17. Yeah was thinking that too.. but he did post it in cichlids section?
  18. yeah ill second that.. whats going on with that tank? lol
  19. Yeah that is one very impressive male! I can see demasoni in it too, and some sort of melanachromis but guessing wont achieve anything we will never find out what it is guess its just best to know if its pure or not.. Hopefully he doesn't too aggressivly defend his domain and breed with everything! Unfortunatly the importers dont care or know what they're bringing into the country I was having a chat with one of the guys at one of the shops in wellington the other day. He was really upset about having a tank full of crappy fish that he doesn't believe the importers id of but its all they can get and its not intirely their fault, at least he was into his fish enough to take the ones he didn't believe the id of and chuck them into another tank and he doesn't mix peacocks etc
  20. Sounds like you have a pretty sound plan I would like to try and make one of these backgrounds at some stage they do sound interesting.. do people cover them in concrete sometimes?
  21. You could do it in that tank, give them a go on their own a few times first they are sometimes bad parents, you can add some meth blue to help them with fungus Good luck.
  22. Nothing.. But people have uses Salt and formalin as well having a sterilise bucket and a rinse bucket so you dont put that stuff in your tanks Unsure how well it works I have heaps of nets and not many tanks running so dont have disease troubles.
  23. lol it happened in my tanks in the fishroom when i wasn't looking after them so well and the lids were overhanging water was dripping down the glass.. I guess cuz it was for africans and was hard/alkaline it would be worse? Who knows but its pretty stubborn thats for sure!
  24. Yeah I would like to knwo too.. Ive tried various glass cleaners even a paint scrapper to try and get it off but it wont work!
  25. I dont know the story but looking at them they resemble alot of the bred for deformaties in goldfish and other fish, someone got a munted baby out of a batch and decided they liked it and there was a market for it so they would breed for it I presume?
