    Breeding setups

Other people seem to have no problem breeding the australes but I certainly do.

I built a 1200 x 400 x 400 tank divided into 6 sections and heated by a heat pad under the tank. The temperature is controlled by the water leval relative to the section with the thermostat. I do miss the days with a heated fishhouse--life was so easy then.
  3. Dwasrfs are buggers for getting dropsy
  4. You use a lovibond compareter
  5. It is usually the humans that dont like the tannins. They make many fish randy. Always happy to make the partner a cup of tea.

ej, hate to give you a bad day. A building under 10 sq M does not require a building consent provided it is only one story high, at least as far from the boundary as high and does not contain certain things including plumbing and drainage. Better get out the camouflage nets.
  8. I murdered the grindals after about 6 goes at resurection. Some people at totaly tanked have the inside running so I may get on the bludge. Busy at the moment setting up for locusts, mealworms and waxworms and running out of room (along with partner's sense of humour).
  9. Some soft woods (like pinus radiata) are treated to prevent rot and insect attack. Hardwoods generally cannot be treated because they will not absorb the treatment. My point was that hard woods may not be hardwood

Barrie, moving fish in your wife's hobby room---are you wishing to be single again. Thats a bit like letting your wife put the sewing machine in the shed.
  11. They are on the lid to escape death. They do better in my view in a wooden box that can breath. Whiteworms, grindals and microworm produce water as a waste and so the media gets wetter. It does't worry the latter two but whiteworms don't like being too wet (or warm). Barrie is on to it. You can tell how healthy the colony is by the amount of small ones present. If not happy sex does not rear its ugly head and they are all large ones. You can seperate out the small ones (to feed to teenage fish or to put back to grow on) by puting them in a glass and filling it with water. You will see the big ones sink and the small ones take longer. With a bit of practice you can pour the small ones of and even adjust the size. Cheapscate's grindal worms.
  12. That is a great Idea, It is what I used to do with fish in Quarantine. Comes off with meths when finished.
  13. A hardwood is so because of the cell structure not because it is hard. Balsa is a good example, but also kauri and totara are "soft" hardwoods. Hardwoods will not rot as quickly as soft woods like pine.
  14. It was only part of Indonesia after they went in and pinched it---hence the peace keeping force. By a complete co incidence there is oil off the coast. I believe they also have some differences over who is the true profit. I don't think they have weapons of mass destruction.

    Breeding killies

They are not sensitive to light in the sense that many tetras are.
  16. Looks like Hygrophila stricta grown emersed and the emersed growth will not convert to submersed. When you have enough new submersed growth you can nip it off and replant it and the remaining root will grow new submersed growth also. The bit in the middle makes good compost.
  17. I have just received a dozen tadpoles that are soon to morph and were sent in a 2 litre container with a small amount of water at about 2.30pm Tuesday. They were to be sent by overnight courier but mistakenly ended up in normal post. They have therefore been sent from Auckland by truck and delivered on the posties pushbike. Arrived Friday afternoon and to my complete surprise are all OK. Imported fish are expected to be in transit for up to 36 hours and I have seen successful imports that have been in transit for a lot longer.
  18. Most Crypts would convert to emersed provided it is warm and wet and you have a mature rootstock. Some people do it in a bell jar in a glasshouse. It was Norwest this morning---didn't even have to light the fire.
  19. I used to always use a pilot light when breeding fighters so the male can see what is going on and so the fry can feed night and day because they are so small.
  20. You should remove the males at 2-3 weeks of age and then breed those virgin females to your best males.
  21. Hard to tell what they are with Crypts often because they can vary so much according to conditions. Only way realy is to flower them and go by the flower. Very individual and spectacular but have not done it myself. Have seen some flowered and they look great.
  22. I don't grow it as it needs more light than I have in my setup (both green & red)
  23. I think it is mayaca. Red pine is confused with Rotala wallichii but is actually another type of mayaca. That is the problem with common names. I have bought all sorts of rotala and they all turned out to be rotundifolia when grown emersed. R. wallichii has a white flower and I don't think it is in NZ.
  24. Quarantine works both ways. You are just as likely to pick up a sub clinical disease and put it in your Q tank if you use your filter in another tank to seed it. As Caryl said low stocking and water changes but mainly the first. I have 6 tanks set up for spawning at the moment with between 3 and 5 fish in each and no water change in 4 days (30 litre tanks) and probably wont for another 3-4 days with no filter or airstone. They are both methods of cheating and the fish can be OK without cheating. I have some fish coming soon and the anonamous supplier has put them under stress for a while to bring out and treat any diseases which may be there. There is a lot of sub clinical disease around which only comes out with stress. Quarantine is Quarantine and is pointless unless complete.
  25. I have 10 small tanks used for breeding and raising fry and none have airstones or filters and it is not a problem. Filters are a very easy way to spread disease and if you sterilize them you have to wait until the tank recycles (about two weeks--about the Q period) so it defeats the whole purpose.
