    LIGHTS

If the plants are growing well get one the same. Have a look on the ends of the tube and tell us what is written there.
  2. Just use as per instructions. It is a good mixture of treatments.
  3. Looks like a bunch to the left and right. It is usually grown and in the shops in the emersed state but converts quickly and easily. It travels badly and is easily damaged in the submersed state.
  4. The stargrass needs good light and will go black without it so it is best to keep it in small clumps and short. You can cut off the top two thirds and plant in front of the stalks to hide them (and they will sprout again). The other plants like the red one have been grown emersed and are best left to convert to submersed growth before trimming.
  5. I just noticed the American accent. Out of curiosity what would a mccaw cost over there.
  6. Is that a cheaque book in the bottom of the cage?
  7. Your choice. Everybody has a different way of doing things and the best way is the one that works for you. I would use 1/2 cool white and 1/2 growlux for 16-18 hours a day but my tanks are only up to about 450mm water depth, and half the light you propose. You are probably going to have to suck and see.
  8. Energy savers don't give as much light as a straight flouro tube as much of the light is blocked by the coils in front of it. They don't have the range of k values that are available for straight flouros (such as growlux---20000k)
  9. Blueandkim has it on Trademe from time to time--send a PM. Soft acid water and good light as I recall.
  10. I hope your bath springs a leak. (It would't matter here as the ice does't go through the plug hole)
  11. There is a short variety of hair grass but I haven't seen it in many years. Glossostigma is small but not a grass and needs a lot of light (hard on a small tank)
  12. I take back all the smart arsed comments I have made in the past about those god has punished by placing them on the wrong side of the Bombays. You have mossies and daphnia and at the moment we have snow. There could be a message there.
  13. Whiteworms, microworms, bbs, mealworms, wax worms, locusts, daphnia and mossies (in season), aphids (in season). God, who needs animals when we already have an insect zoo. Feeding killies, newts, frogs and tropical fish generally.
  14. It is 6 of one and half a dozen. Gas is dearer than electricity but you only heat the water that you use. You can do this with electricity as well. Electric storage heaters use power to heat the water all the time. When people rang up to say that their septic tank had failed the first question was always "How many teenage daughters are living in the house?"
  15. The daphnia will be back soon.

You can lead a horse to water but you can't stop it urinating in the trough. I too am tempted sometimes to make a smart arsed remark (like the one above) but I try to remind myself of some of the goddam stupid mistakes I made in the past, and am still not immune from.
  17. They should be culled and certainly not used to breed from. It is genetic through inbreeding usually I think.
  18. Where abouts do you live? It might be best to get one locally as it gets pretty cold at night this time of the year for posting them
  19. Many thanks, now comes the challenge.
  20. There are two common Amazon Swords--amazonicus and bleheri. The latter has a slightly wider leaf and more stalk before the leaf starts but it is not that easy to tell the difference with smaller plants. When you pull out and replant sword plants they grow completely new roots and the existing ones die off---they don't like being replanted.
  21. Wonder tonic contains quinine which is a good treatment for parasites like white spot (used to be used for malaria) so no need for salt. The temperature rise speeds up the release of the treatable vegetative form from the white spot cysts that you see on the fish but you need to be sure that you are not stressing fish by getting them too hot.
  22. They are feeding on the yolk sack when hatch and when that is used up they start swimming to look for food. They don't feed until the yolk is consumed and many people make the mistake of feeding too early and the uneaten food rots and causes a bacterial bloom which uses up the oxygen in the water and hey presto--dead fish. Adding a few snails is used by many at this stage. It does't remove the waste but it changes the form of it so it is easier for you to remove. Try to feed as often as you can and learn to judge the amount so that it is consumed and not building up waste.
