  1. Which is latin for round leaves that rotate around the stem.
  2. I grew a lot of aquarium plants in a glasshouse and they grew well but the leaves were dry and the roots wet. These are plants that like wet roots but most that you are looking at like moist only. In a very humid setup you have a lot more problems than when the leaves are dry.
  3. Now that you know they pose no risk you will be able to save the 40k---that is a bonus
  4. When you have a phD in ecology you might appreciate what we have here and not wish to bring in something else just because it looks pretty.
  5. It is not the government that gets the money, It is the experts that you have to employ to make the case that they will not cause any problems and cannot survive if released. And also the experts they may employ to review your application to see if it should be approved or declined. The person saying yes or no in the end is probably very well qualified and employed on slightly more than the basic wage.
  6. In a previous life I had 60 but now have one little one with lumbriculus and a few ponds with daphnia.
  7. One dollar for a rubbish guppy is expensive.
  8. I hear what is being said (I must have read it all out loud) but I still think every person is different and every person is unique, wether god created them or they popped out from under a cabbage and if people can't find a label for you who has the problem. I have been different all my life, still am and still don't care what other people think or want to label me. I am who and what I am so like it or lump it. Have a good xmas wether you believe or not.
  9. I think a lot of the cost would have been involved in consultations such as would the natives be offended, would it be safe etc. This is all part of the bollocks imposed by the government where all these "experts" with massive fees have to be involved in the process. Having spent some time in the children's ward in Christchurch many years ago where there was a tropical aquarium I can confirm that the kids really loved it.
  10. Actually there are very few.
  11. Java fern and crypts will both grow emersed.
  12. Some people complain about being put into pigeon holes then spend all their energy creating more holes to be pigeon holed in to. Leave the pigeons to deposit on the statues or be made into pies I say, and just be who you are with no label other than that given by your parents.
  13. It depends entirely on the tank setup and load. I have done a small water change monthly on a well planted and lightly loaded tank to daily 90% changes on a heavily loaded bare tank containing heaps of fish being heavily fed to get them to a saleable size. No chlorine in the water here so straight from the tap--blended for temperature on heavy water changes. That was until water main repairs were chlorinated.
  14. It is important to feed the right salads as many salads that are fed ("because he likes them") actually block the absorption of calcium even if you feed plenty. There is very good info on the beautiful dragons site which colour codes a whole list of foods as to what can be fed as a staple or sometimes or never.
  15. It is what they say it is
  16. Probably a limited market because they would need a species only tank I would think.
  17. You need to convince her that will be obeyed that the water acts as a heat sink so the more and bigger tanks you have in the fish room the more the saving on heating.
  18. I saw them in a shop in Auckland a few years back.
  19. Me also but us oldies are not allowed to say things like this or the cycling police might arrive at the door, dead shrimp sellers will go broke and people will no longer be able to poison their fish with cloudy ammonia Ammonium hydroxide - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Ball-and-stick model of the ammonia molecule, Ball-and-stick model of the water .... ammonia that has had soap added to it is known as "Cloudy ammonia". ‎
  20. It is not about wether they like wet roots, it is about wether they feed through the roots, and they don't. My partner grows them and they do very well consuming my dead locusts but the roots are only there as anchors.
  21. everybody would love to import fancy shrimps but they are all waiting to win lotto and find 27 volunteers to fill out the paper work as well as 3 phDs to do the research.

Yes. Keep an eye on it so you can treat in the early stages if a problem turns up.
