  1. Formalin at 12 mls/100litres will do it but is toxic to fish and plants at that dosage.
  2. The strains still take a lot of beating
  3. Mother Jennifer-jen. Father Alan -al or min. Daughters Joanna-jo, Samantha-sam, Stephanie-steph. I don't think you can avoid shortening or nicknames.
  4. I got into a spot of bother when doing national service in the army many moons ago. Went to the pub and took a shortcut across the parade ground and got caught by a regular sargent who kept shouting "Hey you" which I ignored and kept walking. When he caught up with me (he took the long way around) he asked if I was deaf so I said my best friend was Chinese but he was not HEY YU so I didn't think he was talking to me. He either thought I was that thick I was not worth worrying about or realised he should have addressed me by name, rank or soldier. Anyway he told me to get off which I was happy to do.
  5. I have used one in one of my setups (secret squirel) but I took out the bulb and run the fan 24/7 over a ceramic heat emitter on a thermostat. Couldn't see the point of having a light at the bottom which is where I wanted the heat source. Put a seperate light at the top.
  6. Sounds like it is not whitespot but hard to tell without a picture.
  7. I have H. umbrosum grown emersed and for sale. If you want some pm me.

    Ram Growths

There can be a number of signs and triggers. The trigger for testing for iridovirus during quarantine is septicaemia or deaths. There is good reason why some importers stay away from importing certain fish and Rams are one of these (particularly the golden rams) That is why they are not always around even though approved for import. If signs are present the fish can be dead in 5 days. If you have a look in the other post to the link to the draft import health standard for ornamental fish the high risk fish will show you the potential diseases that put these species into high risk. Many are common fish and some are at risk from a number of diseases. These will therefore be fish that will be more difficult to get added to the approved list and also more difficult to get an importer to bring in if approved. It is generally regarded that there is no cure for diseases caused by viruses. There will be some that claim they know a way to "hold it off"
  9. There is some good info if you go to their price list book on the opening page.

    Ram Growths

Iridoviruses are relatively common in many types of imported fish and it usually presents as ulcers. A causative factor may well be the stress that comes with the shipping from overseas and the quarantine process. It is like a lot of fish diseases and may not be seen until the fish is put under stress.
  11. It grows best when cut short otherwise the lower parts go black from lack of light.

    Ram Growths

Since it is proposed in the draft import health standard for ornamental fish that any fish showing signs of septicaemia or sudden deaths has to be tested for iridoviruses hopefully this problem will go away by being picked up in quarantine. This of course will not pick up the problem in locally bred fish.
  13. The chlorine levels in a pool are relatively harmless but most kids that hop in a pool immediately want to pee (which helps use up the chlorine).
  14. My guess would be Limnophila aromatica as well. There has been a bit floating around since someone discovered it was being sold as an herb at the Asian markets and converted it to submersed growth. I am slowly working on getting it back to emersed.
  15. If you do not wish to subject your fish to being constantly sprayed with insecticide why would you want to subject your family? The chlorine in the swimming pool will be at a concentration that should be harmless---it is the other things in there that may be a problem.
  16. If the base is properly and completely supported it doesn't realy matter how thick it is.
  17. I don't think mitre10 or Bunnings have silicone tubing
  18. The calculations are based on the tank being properly braced---Either a supprting steel frame like in the good ol days or european bracing.
  19. Feed them every time you walk past the tank and do a water change on the way back. You need to keep seperating them by size as they grow at different rates and the ones that grow the fastest are often not the best fish but will get most of the food (including the smaller fish when the size difference becomes enough).
