  1. More likely gill damage through too much NH3 or nitrite.
  2. Petworld have improved a lot of late. Quite a bit of changes since the shake damage.
  3. Have to agree with A-town. not an aquatic plant and will probably rot off in your tank. Grows OK as a pot plant on the window sill. Unfortunately there are a lot of plants sold in the shops that are like that.
  4. organism, redwood aquatics, petworld, proud paws if you are in to reptiles. 2/3 of the animates shops are still open.
  5. This is one of the problems with believing that Mrs Google sits on the right hand of god and only speaks the truth. In reality anybody can say anything on the internet. The information on laminated glass is also not correct. I have built thousands of tanks and would never do it that way and I would advise you not to either.
  6. There are different bacteria doing different jobs in cycling. One lot converts NH3 to nitrite and another converts that to nitrate. The numbers of each depend on what is available so the ones converting ammonia will multiply first then the others will increase as the nitrite becomes available. I have never used them but all I can suggest is to use one of the products that supplies or encourages the bacterial development. The tank needs to cycle properly.
  7. NH3 tends to do a lot of damage to the gills and I am not sure if that is repairable. Since it is still alive it may not be too bad. All you can do is try to maintain good water conditions.
  8. Actually more is not better than less. The extra glue does nothing but make it look ugly. If a tank is glued together properly it will be waterproof and the fillet just makes it easier to clean. Have a look at some of the tanks that are made in China. They use very little glue and look very tidy. My main concern here is that it is proposed to not glue the tank together but to hope the fillet will hold it together. I think that is a disaster waiting to happen and I hope others do not take up with the idea.
  9. The shell will only go into solution and raise the hardness if the water is acid. Some plants and fish like or will tolerated elevated hardness.
  10. As Caryl has said, the frequency of water changes required will relate to the conditions in the tank including how heavily planted, how heavily stocked, how heavily fed the fish are, etc. Every aquarium is different but most people stock their tanks relatively heavily.
  11. What rear strains are you looking for?
  12. So you do not actually glue the tank together, you just use the fillet to hold it together. Good luck with the carpet.
  13. Could you explain how you build a tank first then silicone.
  14. They usually have a flap valve or non return valve so they can be primed. I place a chopstick on it and push it down hard so the valve is removed. They work best if there is a good excess of length on the downward end of the siphon.
  15. My male used to get his front claws trimmed pretty regularly by his gilrlfriend (every time he said giz a kiss)
  16. Mine did best in rainwater that had matured and was growing heaps of algae.
  17. Air liqiude down here sell C02 tanks now and again, as well as welding supply people. Converted fire extinguihers seem to be cheapest. Most try to avoid the ongoing expense of hiring. Air liquide down here are the cheapest to fill and do it while you wait. There is a problem with filling the small bottles for making the fiz drinks and that is that the filling setups are designed for weighing bigger bottles so when filling they can only guess if it is full and many times it is not.
  18. Incubated 6 eggs from one female to get males and all infertile, also 4 for females before males failed and only 2 like this one (from the same clutch) hatched. Hoping to do better this coming season. Hang in there Al. At least they don't throw water over the electrics when it shakes.
  19. Breeders secret, or more honestly it was incubated to get females at 81 deg F. Won't be sad if one turns out to be a male.
  20. i have two setups for CO2 (no longer in use because of shaky shaky. One is a converted extinguisher that was converted and tested by a company dealing with extinguishers, the other equipment came from Ebay and has been very reliable while in use.
  21. You cannot use lpg cylinders for CO2, they are not designed to take the pressure. A fire extinguisher is designed for CO2. Different gas cylinders have different threads to stop people mixing and matching and killing themselves.
  22. Or you did not have all of the above.
  23. If you have a diy system you have to let it run 24/7 until it stops producing gass. Once running it will therefore not flutuate but will lower the pH and maintain it until the gas production decreases and it slowly returns to normal.
