  1. Welcome, enjoy your time here and good luck with the breeding.
  2. Many snails come up to the surface to get air. They also "swim" along on the surface tension feeding on floating stuff. I don't think our present "copper" coins will work because they don't contain copper.
  3. In the day, most diseases in aquariums were treated by adding a penny. When the snails left the water it was time to remove the penny because enough copper had gone into solution. Who dropped pennies in the wishing well?
  4. I would suspect it is a virus and hence the use of antibiotics, fungicides and parasiticides don't work. The fact that guppies have been linebred for so many generations may also be a contributing factor in terms of genetic weakness or susceptability.
  5. I had it in goldfish I imported many years ago. There are a number of cases of piscene TB in humans but I think from quarantine facilities. This is the main reason for the requirement to wear long gloves when working with fish in Quarantine. As far as I am aware it is virtually incurable and the fish are destroyed rather than treated. Emaciation and bent spines are not uncommon signs of disease or genetic problems in fish.
  6. Frequently the plants the goldfish don't eat will die by themselves because they are not really aquatics.
  7. White clouds are called "poor mans neons" for a reason.
  8. It is true that stressed fish will be more susceptable to disease and that the females will be more stressed but piscene TB is normally picked up at quarantine and is not common. It also tends to go through a whole bunch of fish and is not that selective. I would not think the problem is TB. There is good reason why guppies are one of the fish that Maf wish to keep a closer look on under the new Quarantine requirements. They are susceptable to a number of serious diseases.
  9. That is our problem as well. You wonder if there is an accountant there whose job it is to save money by destroying the evidence. Their other trick is to make lots of claims. We have 6 claim numbers that they have given us even though we have only claimed for the house and contents for February. Every other claim means you have to pay the first $200. We are still discussing that issue and at the moment it is still polite. This may well change if they insist on being stupid about it. I know a number of people who are really getting a hard time from the wee darlins---you would think the shakes would be enough. I am convinced a lot of this is stalling tactics until the shakes stop (which we are told could be 4 years). The problem will be that by the time they decide to start rebuilding all the tradespeople will have gone to Australia looking for work.
  10. Have to agree with supasi above. Sand is only very fine gravel after all and will not behave any differently to gravel from a chemical point of view. All my planted tanks are greywacke sand and it is not a problem. The plants look new as suggested and the whole system will need time to get established and create a balance. This cannot happen unless you leave them alone and "just look not touch." If you kept digging up your vegetable plants and washing them under the tap, leaving them with snails then goldfish I think the veg department at your supermarket would become your favourite place pretty quickly.
  11. After they laid eggs in another tank?
  12. Had a couple over 5 this morning but no damage here. Just a bit sick of them. Best part is that EQC sent Emails and phone calls saying that if we got all the info re claims in by October 28 we would be paid out by Xmas. We had no damage to speak of in September but heaps in February. Made a list of damaged items (3 A4 pages and a dvd of pictures) and sent it in before due date. Rang EQC a couple of days before Xmas and they have no record of us sending the info. The saga continues.
  13. Welcome and enjoy your time here.
  14. Just a waste of money. Move to Christchurch, we get them down here for free.
  15. The reason why gloves are a requirement when fish are in quarantine.
  16. S/S mesh is very expensiv, like $50 half sq M. Whitebait netting is far more affordable and can be bought from fishing tackle shops for a few bucks. I used to use small tanks with a smaller tank inside and the bottom of mesh which is the same idea as you have. It works for fish with eggs that are not too adhesive and will drop through.
