Caryl is totally correct the cloudiness is just a bacterial bloom Did you clean the filters recently when you did the last water change If so the bacterialevels are down in your filter and its trying to catch back up It wont hurt your fish at all Why did you have an ammonia problem in the first place is something id be more worried about What is your maintanance routine with the tank? Also what filtration do you currently have and the dimensions of the tank What fish do you keep? Do you own a test kit at all? Brad
-
I myself wouldnt even try to keep these fish together A 4cm peacock isnt a highbodied fish yet they are still small and a 12cm Venustus would eat it quite easily If you had them Ryan and they used to scrap what were the sizes cos im postitive a 4cm peacock will not try and fight back a 12cm Venustus Also how big is the Kadanga??? CCL there is a major difference between 4' tanks in the dimensions Ryan You have posted up saying you have had big peacocks together not a 4cm one It would be appreciative if you could base your opinions on the matter at hand not change it to suit Brad

All they use to help remove ammonia is carbon They are good in an emergency as they can just be chucked into the tank Dont use them when medicating your tank as it will remove the medication from the water Brad

I love this food I was skeptical at the start as I am with all the new fads I introduced a small range into my shop which Im happy to see has risen to virtually stocking the entire range My africans have never looked better just from feeding them Cichlid formula I did find my discus were finicky towards it but they have come around though i still vary their diet alot still I would reccomend this food to absolutly anyone Brad
-
Dont worry the Ceramic rings only need to be placed in there anyway they dont have to be placed neatly Brad
-
I agree with a few things said here I personlly reccomend that people buy a test kit as its best to know your water is fine then to take the shops word for it I dont trust any ones tests with water quality as its to easy to misread Also as said as well its always the time u need to know what your water is like when the LFS is shut or you cant get there There is a shop close to me that I know misstest customers water as to onsell products and to blame them for fish deaths Yes your KH reading affects your PH reading but its still better to have ur PH close to the right level as well Discus dont like PH of 7.8 and Lake Tangs dont like 6.5 Some fish will like this range but not all Tanks that are established still can change very quickly and its alot easier when you know whats wrong with your tank I say buy a test kit and test your water fairly often Brad

I have reasearched this alot and its quite likely that there isnt enough Iodine in salt for it to be a problem with fish Some salts you can buy arent just salt Like for example Seachems range of cichlid salts are modified so that they have the same minerals and elements that are found in the specific lake your trying to recreate I know that water was sampled from the lakes and boiled down to find out the exact percentages that these minerals make up in the lake So theoretically with RO water and exactly the right amount of this mixture you can recreate the lake exactly Its up to you which one you use as using normal sea salt will help its not as good Brad
-
I think you will find that your filters will not remove nitrogen as its stays in its form as Nitrate Its from here the plants will absorb it My heavily planted display tank never reads Nitrate simply frm the plants Discus love it As said above the main problems will be to much currant but this all depends on the inhabitants Brad
-
I think more the point here is that generally the fish that will readily interbreed arent generally found in the numbers together that you think they are Yes maybe you saw the video and expect the whole lake just the same with heaps of fish side by side but this isnt the case Also with fish in your aquarium if you keep large enough numbers they will breed with their own without looking for a different species Its only when u keep small numbers in a tank when they will crossbreed With the fish you saw in the video(which I havent seen) How many are the same family? Brad

Thats not a sure fire way to know your over feeding I have gravel that has been sitting dry for over 12 months and when i filled up a tank recently i saw the snails starting to move about b4 the tank was even full Over feeding is a major problem in fish tanks Its alot harder to underfeed then over feed Everything you add whether its eaten or not coauses ammonia When there is to much either uneaten food or fish waste the bio load is increased which isnt good if your only just filtering your tank enough Uneaten food quickly clog up filters as well which only makes the problem worse Brad
-
I wouldnt say its only use it for a shop to make some profit Its a great product for removing anything foriegn in the water Ammonia is a good one Its used alot in salt more the freshwater Dont be worried about it leeching back into the tank water as it will not do this Its need to be heated very high to be reactivated which is how the toxins are released from the carbon The reason it has to be replaced so often is because it works so well 90% of its effectivness is used within the first 2 days Generally useless after about 4 weeks though this depends on the tank Its not something that you have to have in your filter though in the right cirsumstances its worth having it Brad

There are naturally occuring wild Electric yellows that are white and pale as there are also Blue ones Caeruleus actually means blue in latin Most likely the ones you have are from bad breeding as we have the same thing here in Australia With sexing yellows i would trust the black markings on the fins as I have had yellows with jet black fins hold fry Vent sexing is the only reliable way Brad
-
I have bred them before I actually had a pair breed in the shop recently as well They are a stunning fish Brad
-
No worries I get to do alot of it in the shop all the time Plus its something i try and get my staff to do all the time So if a customer comes in they know how to work out a species Brad

Its definalty not a Melanochromis vermivorus The body is a different shape With the link you posted to www.cichlid-forum.com have a look at the other pics avail. I woudl guess your fish as a Maingano or Melanochromis cyaneorhabdos http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/species.php?id=756 Brad
-
A crossed Peacock isnt what I would call a Hybrid but anyways From that picture i dont think you can say definalty its a Jacobfriebergi Brad
-
From what i read she didnt know what this fish is Its very hard to definatly determine any female Peacock as they look similiar. Brad
-
What makes you think its a Jacobfreibergi? Yeah i agree its a peacock of sorts And just to be a stickler not all cichlids are mouthbrooders in Malawi only one isnt though Tilapia Rendalli How many Electric Yellows do you have in the tank? Brad
-
Getting their fins torn away isnt always fin rot and quite alot of the time its just a bacterial infection from the white spot and not fin rot All your white spot medications will treat bacterial and fungal infections at the same time as treating the white spot so i would just use the white spot remedy Brad
-
I dont think your over stoked in that tank but i dont agree with having neons and sailfin molly as i have found they like to eat them This thorough cleaing your tanks get once a month What does it involve? Also Caryl carbon will not release toxins back into the water at any stage Reactivation is required for this and even your oven wont get hot enough for this so i assume the fish tank wont either lol Im not familiar with that filter but see if there are any stickers on the pump filter to show flow rates or anything Brad
-
You will have to treat the tank that its in with a whitespot rememedy You can use salt thought this takes longer IMO to rid them of the parasite Just use half dose when your treating it Raise your tank temp to 29c Do a 25%water change every 3 days and retreat Keep treating at least one treatment after the last time you saw the whitespot on your fish White spot is a parasite that attacks a fish whenever the opurtunity arises generally when a fish is stressing though this isnt always the case It lives in the water free swimming and when it attachs itself to the fish it matures and then breeds and leaves its eggs in the gravel Whitespot can not be killed when its attached the fish or as an egg in the gravel this is why you have keep treating after the last time you saw it or the next lot of eggs will hatch and your infested again Clown loachs will do really well in an african set up as long as your not overbaord with a really high PH anything upto 8 is fine Brad

Definalty the phosphate is coming from your fish food All fish food will give off phosphates in your aquarium Try feeding a minimum amount of food Generally when a discus breeder is feeding alot of food and doin alot of water changes is because of Ammonia and Nitrate rather then phosphate Phosphates help bloom algae You can always try a fast growing plants Val is great so is duckweed A heavily planted tank is great for Discus and helps keep your water perfect Id be worried about the low KH reading of your water Ph can fluctuate very quickly without a hardness level This can be down without affecting your PH Oyster shells will raise your PH Id use a KH buffer Brad

Ammonia Problem or Haunted Tank? Help my little niece!
Freakyfish replied to r0bbie's topic in Freshwater
The PH of the water affects the relationship between Ammonia and Ammonium When the Ph drops below 7 then ammonia is conveted to Ammonium Ammolock converts it to Ammonium without dropping the Ph to below 7 Brad -
Exposure to natural is the best way for your turtle to produce enough Vitamin D3 which is what helps keep the shell hard If your feeding a high quality Turtle food then vitamin D3 wont be a problem as they are supplimented in the food The Uv light will only emmit UV for around 3 months Feed a quality food and get some natural sunlight into him and everything will be great Also Suphew i wasnt aware it will stop all UV through Glass but i do now lol

Yeah its the same thing Being in Canada you will find its alot easier to come across Also Paraguard from Seachem is Metro based Ummm Octozin by waterlife is the same as well Brad
