  1. Hey mate that sounds like an awesome tank If you wanted to go the FX5 let me know ill give you at a great price also for the heating side of things i wouldny go for 2 300watt heaters as this will be expensive on the cold nights but to go for a decent quality heater Jager(Ehiem) make a 300 watt that does heat 1000litres i use one here on my 1800l tank and it still does the job though it doesnt get very cold inside my shop Jager heater sells four around the $70 mark but ill help u out with that as well if you like 3 year warranty shatter proof glass auto cutout if u accidently leave it out of the water You cant go wrong Brad

    New Filter

If you can take some media from the old filter and place it in the new filter this will greatly help you out If this isnt possible then i would leave the new filter longer then a week and it takes anywhere from 4 -6 weeks for a filter to colonize bacteria But this also depends on how well stocked the old tank is compared to the new tank The filter will only grow enought bacteria to clean the tank in its present state and a differnce in load will affect the filter when it goes onto the new tank Brad
  3. I agree that some people have bred fish from different extremes in PH and also a fluctuating PH is very dangerous I have found fish thrive better in a PH from what they are used to Neons are very very touchy to ammonia spikes this is because in a low PH the ammonia levels are safer they dont handle high PH very well at all They lose the majority of their colour I believe we should all try and keep fish in something close to what would make the fish the happiest Brad
  4. OK then well Mollys and livebearers do like a PH above 7 but neons prefer it around 6 so what other fish do you have in your tank Even though PH wont definalty kill your fish it will stress them enough to lose colour and not look as bright as they can be Brad
  5. ok i think the PH is to high for the fish you have with neons preferring a lower 6 reading then over 7 You dont need something decaying in your tank to get high nitrates Your nitrates will constantly rise in your tank due to the Nitrogen cycle of your fish tank with nitrates being the end of the cycle unless its heavily planted I believe it would take a large ornament with alot of stagnant water for a period of time to create a large enuff smell to be created so you could smell it outside of the tank as bad as you described I still believe it was the dead fish that was tuck underneath the ornament Definalty move them around alot when your cleaning the tank so this doesnt reoccur and regular gravel vacs Keep up the water changes at the moment to make sure the ammonia levels and kept low Anaerobic bacteria actually convert Nitrate into Nitrogen gas which is what happens in your tank all the time just not enuff to keepo out nitrates to a minimum What your trying to say is the gravel say under a large ornament is still for awhile and the water there becomes stagnant and there is 0 oxygen in the water then the Anaerobic bacteria will convert Nitrate into Sulphur Dioxide which smells bad and is deadly to your tank mates not nitrite The nitrogen cycle in your fish will very very rarely infact go backwards it will happen in the right situation but its not something we will have to worry bout Brad
  6. Hey i woul,d think that the remains u found was themolly and because it hadnt been moved much is why it had broken up and totally disintegrated and when youmoved the ornament it broke right up and this was the smell you could smell. I would be doing more then a monthly clean on your aquarium probably a fortnightly water change and a good clean every month. Also i would be doin a water change Approx 25% in a few days and then again next weekend cos the amount of ammonia from the dead fish would not help your filter keep the waterclean and might require alittle assistance from you. I dont think this would cause yourfish to scratch as this is usually as sign of parasites or worms though if you have a water test kit check for ammonia nitrite and nitrate and make sure these levels are within acceptable levels being ammonia and nitrirte zero and nitrate under 50ppm Brad
  7. okay guys the first pic at the top is a greyshakei or Pseudotropheus greshakei IMO though Metriaclima zebra "red-top" is a very very similiar species often tough to choose between which one is actually the real fish. Its often not possible to choose between them till they are of breeding size and coloured up totally. Brad

    Fluval FX5

We have these filters here in Oz too but at alot less prices I have sold quite a few with no bad reports yet I have them for $329 in the shop but they do have a RRP of $595 quite alot cheaper then the Ehiems Brad
  10. Honestly mate going by the vents i think you have 2 girls Its not a good idea to go by egg spots as i have seen quite a few females with them. When your vent sexing a fish they have 2 holes one is the anus and the other is the vent Now girls have 1 smaller and 1 large Males generally have then about the same size. Here is a great article that explains it well http://www.fishhead.com/articles/ventsex.htm Brad
  11. I think Justin was inferring these fish are crosses If you look at the large eyes and in the first pic to differences in the body shapes throughout the one group Yes True Electric yellows have the Blark marking though there are some genetic change that have zero black Justin is right if these fish are released in the community the majority of people will breed them with Electric yellows and we lower our quality levels Brad
  12. Hey guys Q1 rinse all your plants in freshwater out of the tap Wont guarantee everything but will help alot Q2 Get s powerhead pump and attach a hose and pump the water out thru the hose easy done Brad
  13. Hey guys unless the Tanks have a sealed unit for the lights not just bare fluros get lids cut to go between the tank and lights The major problem wuth sunsun is moisture in the lights which causes them to short out This is from personal experience Also the filter isnt enough IMO for these tanks easiest way is to run a canister instead of the top filter Less hassles
  14. Actually Chloramine is a combination of Chlorine and Ammonia And not all water will contain this You do run into problems though when u add water top your tank and you have an ammonia problem Using Seachem prime will remove all traces of chlorine and chlormines
  15. One thing thats is wrong with Brisbane water id that it contains Chloramines This is harder to remove and is toxic to fish You should use a decent dechlorinator like Prime by Seachem Brad
  16. Flourish Excel will definalty work on removing brush algae also a great plant food as well I put 10 into a 4' tank in the shop that had it dissapeared within a few days The difference between the real siamese algae eater and the False siamese algae eater is the real one has 2 small whiskers off the nose the real one has a black lateral line and the false one has a gold lateral line above the black one Brad
  17. IMO i havent found goldfish are very good at mosquito larvae If you can get any rainbows especially the aussie ones they clean them up in hours lol its amazing Brad
  18. Yeah thats black shark alright As aggression goes i have found these guys are the most aggressive in the shark species. And as jumpers these guys and silvers are really bad and will find a small hole in the lids to get through Currently in the shop i dont have lids for every tank but these guys def get one Brad
  19. Yeah the lombardoi generally have a definate stripes but not always just the barring in the tail as well made me think lombardoi but i might be wrong lol It has happened before lol Brad
  20. Imo the bottom one looks more like a female Lombardoi or Pseud. Kenyi but im not to sure about the top one not quite the right shape for a cobalt blue but could be a cross between some and a zeb maybe??? Brad
  21. Yeah i have the Photo Atlas which is the first book tells you where to look in the other books That fish is in book 5 but book 4 and 5 havent been done in english yet and there is no word from the publisher when this will be done Brad

  23. Yeah justin your right definatly not a Elec Blue I would have to agree bout the azureus The Sciaenochromis Fyeri has a very pointy head not rounded like the protomelas, copadichromis family also the first one is a type of rainbow very very similiar the one alan was referring to good to see everyone jumping in and helping out Brad
  24. Yeah some of the Gudgeons around are absolutly beautiful And limegirl is right most feeders here are firetail gudgeons though i know there are alot of different fish that i can currently get that are classified as feeders though gudgeons are the cheapest and easiest to get a hold of Brad
