  1. The easiest way is to get some small flying fox They will eat it all up within a few days Just try and get small ones as the larger they get the lazier they get Flourish excel will work but its isnt always great for your fish Brad
  2. Taht heater is big enough for that amount of water Do you have a thermometer Also the temp will depend on outside factor Is there tank subject to really cold areas i.e outside or does it get really cold where the tank is Have the lid on the tank and straight glass will not stop the light coming through
  3. Yeah the test kit might be faulty Though a Ammonia reading of 6-8 is very possible and a regular thing I test water for customers and my own tanks around 20-30 times a week and the amount of times i have tested water that is higher then 5ppm ammonia is amazing and always they are losing some fish but not all The PH of the tank affects the toxicity of Ammonia quite alot the lower the PH is the the more ammonia is coverted to Ammonium which in itself isnt as deadly for fish though your test kit wont tell you which one it is Ammolock will not stop the cycling process and bacteria can still eat Ammonium If the bacteria couldnt eat it then every tank under 7 PH would not cycle Brad
  4. Fair enough then I guess my research might be alittle more lowkey Generally using the net and books I know what your thinking about the internet and useful information Maybe you can explain to me why you can test for Chloramines with an Ammonia test kit? Brad
  5. I must agree that it would be very unusual not to have organic material in the water. But all the research i have done into Chlorine and Chloramine has lead me to believe that Chloramine is a combination of Chlorine and Ammonia. This was done awhile ago as I wanted to give my customers the best advice I could find, and when i dont know know i will research it. Can you show me where you found your information about Chloramines please? Brad
  6. Alan I believe your missing the point I know that can add either Chlorine or Chloramine at the water treatment plant What im saying is that the water straight out of my tap does not contain Chloramine yet contains Chlorine Is my water special because its different to what you believe is correct
  7. Jags actually get to 70cm in tanks They are an amazing cichlid and one i hope to own personally oneday I have had them for sale in the shop and i had around 20 of them at 10cm in with some slightly larger silver sharks Well second day i came in to see 3 Jags all with the tails of silver sharks coming out The silver sharks were at least 10cm and some bigger It did take them 3 days before they finally finished their meal but the sharks were out of there quick smart Brad
  8. The longer you leave the filter without cleaing it the less it will actually work Once it starts to clog alot of bacteria will die off as there isnt much water flow through therefore starving it from Oxygen Once it gets to the point it will stop removing ammonia from the water Also Ammolock and such products will not remove ammonia from the water they convert it to ammonium which is non toxic to fish and the bacteria will convert this to nitrite still Id start with cleaning your filter fairly often to keep it at a maximum level of filtration Keep up regular water changes This will work it self out eventually though i believe the maintanance of the tank will be the cause of the problem Brad
  9. Alan if your correct why is that we dont have chloramine in Gold Coast water supply but we have Chlorine If you like i have added a link where you might be able to work out that its not a combination of Chlorine and protein to make Chloramine http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chloramine Now this has been pointed out to you before please take the time to at least have a read Brad
  10. OK i have a couple of ideas for you When the filter was/is cleaned how is cleaned? Also how much food goes into this tank? Has the gravel been gravel vaced at all? A fighter generally isnt a great idea with neons and I have noticed them eating the neons IMO if there arent any Nitrites then the tank isnt cycling at all which would mean the filter is being cleaned under the tap Also to much food will cause alot of ammonia Id say now stop feeding them every day only every 2nd or 3rd Water change every couple of days only 30% Check water quality and when Nitrates are rising then its cycling As you know Ammolock wonrt remove it it also will not change the results from your test kit The majority of ammonia test kits convert all ammonia to free ammonia and then test it So its possible to have high ammonia from a test and not have an ammonia problem Whats the PH of this tank? Brad
  11. Can i ask how u will get pairs and 1 trio From lol i think you might have more males and just a mistake Brad
  12. Chlorine dissapates out of the water with any gentle airation Please people do not flush your fish Even with a sudden change in temp and with chlorinated water death isnt instant and even so it might not kill diseases and parasites that might be on the fish This is one of the most irresponsible ways to getting rid of fish that are no longer needed It will only result with less fish being able to be imported in NZ whish will only hurt the industry We have to prove to the people in power that fish keepers will responsibly Brad
  13. Do not use the freezer method at all The vast majority of fish are still alive when they start to freeze I had a meeting with a leading Vet here in Australia and this was brought up For small fish a sharp pair of scissors and cut across the head just behind the eyes instantly kills them for larger fish the whack them onto somethig hard to generally the easiest but using clove oil is by far the easiest to do small bucket and a small amount of clove oil will over anesthetise the fish to the point where it will die then dispose of into the freezer and into a proper grabage system Never ever flush or usie a insinkerator I know of people working in sewrage plants where they have found live fish in the pipes on the way into the plant And with the insinkerator this would kill the bacteria and diseases that fish might be carrying The main reason(inc Aust and NZ) for not being able to impor diff fish is that fact they are worried about outbreak of either the fish or the diseases that they might be carrying getting into local waterways Think of thie next time you go to flush a fish Brad
  14. A thing with algae is that it needs 3 things in your tank to survive They are Carbon Nitrogen and Phosphate It simply cant survive without these 3 things The only one you can easily keep under control is the Phosphate If you cut back on your fish food and get a filter media that removes Phosphates it should eliminate your problems with Algae Brad
  15. Def go an Aquaclear for a proper Hangon You wont even hear it if you keep the water level up to it Also AquaOne and Aquaclear are totally different brands with Aquaclear being a Hagen product made in Italy and AquaOne made in china That said AquaOne are still a great filter just not in the Aquaclear range of quality Brad
  16. I dont believe that white spot means the fish are stressed Also your right Alan salt wont kill the white spot but it doesnt help prevent new whitespot parasites from attaching themselves to the fish I would totally clean out the pond and treat the fish inside somewhere you can keep the temp up alittle to make the cycle of life for the whitespot faster As Alan also said make sure its not a big temp change when you release the fish back into the pond I dont think with that temp of the water you will have problems with a lack of oxygen as the lower the temp the higher ability to hold oxygen And as Caryl has pointed out only use one medication at a time Though salt is fine to dose with at the same time as a white spot remedy Brad
  17. Im a fan of culling anything that isnt right And anything that comes from a wholesaler that i feel isnt good enough for the hobby gets feed to my native fish so that means anything under around 20cm will get eaten plus i love watchig them feed which helps The main reason i see culling appropriate is in Oz we have some really bad Electric yellows which could have been avoided to a degree by people who kept on top of the badly coloured ones and stopped them breeding Brad
  18. With the majority of canisters including Eheim and Fluval they are quoted on flow rates with no media and no head height But with the higher end canister the flow rate isnt as important as some of the cheaper brands The flow rates on the Pro3 Eheim is 1900lph thought this drops to around 1200 full of media and this is rated to a 1200 litre tank and i know people using it 1000litre tanks with no problems If your going to go the Fluval i would reccomend the 405 Eheim you have a few to choose from depending on your budget With some of the others i wouldnt drop below 1200lph on them Brad

    What is he?

Well each to their own I have had L052 and L168 And my 168 looks alot like that compared to the 52 When did you see the 168 in Australia as we had alot of trouble when they were first imported with the wrong fish sent instead of 168 Brad
  20. Whats the maintanance like?> How often do you do water changes? How much do you change at a time? What filter do you have? How do you clean the filer? Brad
  21. Freakyfish

    What is he?

Hey guys IMO thats a L168 we have only just been allowed to legally import them here which made hte price plummet here we are looking at $65 to $80 for a 9cm fish The L052 and L168 are very very similiar and alot of people believe its the same fish just with different marking from a location variant Either way very similiar but I think you have L168 Brad
  22. If there isnt any Nitrate then its not cycled yet then As unless its heavily planted Though small Nitrates are hard to test for Still everything has worked for you so heres hoping that luck continues Brad
  23. Umm im assuming you mean work as in get on alright in the same tank Should be ok depending on tank size Not of them get overly big but they wont want to be cramped either Brad
  24. Hey yeah definalty sounds like BBA the easiest way to remove is to get a fish that eats True Siamese flying fox (Crossocheilus siamensis ) will devour it over night They are amazing Im not sure if these fish are avail. in NZ If not yeah Flourish Excel will work but its tough on fish if over dosed Try for the natural method before adding chemicals to the water Brad
  25. Hey im not much help but i have got most of those Sorry had to say Very nice selection though Here is hoping you can get them Brad
