Help Please: Changing Discus Tank to an Electric Yellow Tank
LYNDYLOO replied to LYNDYLOO's topic in Freshwater
I know it sounds like a dumb question, but is there any particular way in which you wash the sand without loosing half if it?? I used to wash my gravel using a sieve, obviously I cant use a sieve to was my sand, so how do you guys do it. -
Help Please: Changing Discus Tank to an Electric Yellow Tank
LYNDYLOO replied to LYNDYLOO's topic in Freshwater
Thanks Ryan, Maybe I will pop the yellows in with the exsisting fish and see how they go, if no good, I will have to think about rehoming who ever is causing trouble  Have ordered the substrate today, so will hopefully have that changed over within the next few days, will let the tank settle for a few days to a week before adding the Yellows :bounce: -
My younger sister contracted Guillain-Barre Syndrome at the beginning of last year, it is the most debilitating diease I have ever seen After spending several months in hospital, and months and months of physio, teaching her body how to function again, was very very sad to see such a healthy young girl go through so much. Thankfully she has since made an almost full recovery.

Help Please: Changing Discus Tank to an Electric Yellow Tank
LYNDYLOO replied to LYNDYLOO's topic in Freshwater
Thanks for your help everyone. Can I leave my Corys, Choc Ghost Knife, Blue Acara and Big Angel in the tank if I change over to Electric Yellows?? I have had abit of a change around and now decided to keep the last of my Discus collection, I have placed him in another Tank that I have. I have popped the big angel that I have into the tank that the Electric Yellows will go into, if he cant stay there I will need to think about rehoming him. I thought it maybe a good idea to slowly do the change over in the tank over the next week or so, hopefully it wont stir the crud up to much when I remove the gravel and replace it with the silica sand. I plan to do a 1/3 water change with every step i do just to try and keep it as clean as possible as I'm really not wanting to remove the fish when I change over the substrate. Will do a good vac once all the gravel is removed before I place down the Silica Sand. Anything else I need to be aware of?? Thanks Heaps Lynda -
Hi Guys and Girls, I'm thinking about changing the Discus Tank that I've had for the past 10 yrs into an Electirc Yellows Tank. I'm guessing I will have to change the substrate, as it appears these fish like to dig, I'm steering towards using the Silica sand, I have a few questions tho: Can I remove the exsisting gravel and replace it with the Silica Sand without having to remove all of the Tank water?? I'm hoping I wont have to go through the cycling process if I keep the setup I already have up and running. Tank is an Aqua One AR980, with a Interal Filter of 1000lph aswell as running a Aqua One CF1200 External Filter. Tank has plenty of plants which will obviously need to be removed when I replace the substrate, but will be replanted when I have all that sorted. Do I need to gravel vac the silica?? If yes, will the sand be sucked up the vac?? I have a Choc Ghost Knife fish, will he be ok to leave in the tank with the Electric Yellows or will I need to rehome him?? I have done alot of reading on this over the past month or so, if there is anything that you think I need to know please don't hesitate to share you knowledge with me

I'm finding this thread really interesting, I'm seriously thinking about changing my Discus Tank for the same set up you are thinking about with the electric yellows etc. I have no idea where to start, I have fruit salad gravel in my Discus Tank at the moment, so I'm eagerly watching this thread to get some ideas as to whether I need to change my gravel before I do anything else. Think I'm liking the idea of the silica sand :bounce:

Please help. Sick discus. Ongoing disease 5 months
LYNDYLOO replied to discusnoobie's topic in Diseases
I'm finding this Thread very interesting. I seem to be going through the same thing. I have lost 2 Discus in the past week, and it looks like another one is on it's way out. I transfered them into a 40 Ltr hospital tank, treated with Furan 2, no change, then did a course of Metro, twice a day with 100% water changes with each new dose, unfortunately I had no luck in saving them, lost my Big Fella last night Symptoms are exactly as it says for Discus Plague :an!gry I have 5 other Discus in my tank, with 1 not looking to healthy at the moment, really not sure what to do from here, maybe I should more the one thats not looking to healthy into the hospital tank. I'm doing 50% water changes twice a week, may just have to up the water changes and hope for the best I guess. -
Maybe try changing your Tank around, then they will have to re-establish their territory, this is normal behaviour for Chiclids.

Guess who's getting a 700L for Christmas this year :)
LYNDYLOO replied to Dave+Amy's topic in Freshwater
Woohoo Lucky You Amy :bounce: This is the Setup I use to do my Water Changes, not sure if the idea will be any good to you or not. Obviously this end goes in the Tank And this end goes on the Tap, depending on if you have one of the newish taps that is. Takes me about 10 minutes to change 100 litres, of warm water, this is only for refilling the Tank, I use my Gravel Cleaner to syphon the 100 litres out of the Tank with the waste water going out the window onto the lawn. -
We had a the Wind, Rain, Thunder + Lightning and Hail at about 2.30 this arvo, have a feeling from the weather forecast we have abit more to come tomorrow afternoon.

Ohhhh NOoooo, sorry to hear your terribly sad news

Take the caves out that you have provided and pop in some non collapsable caves, or glue the sides and roof together so they cant fall onto him again, or maybe you could dig the sides of the cave into the substrate so he cant dig under them, cat fall anywhere if they're already on the bottom of the Tank. Good Luck

I use a Non Scratch Kitchen scouring sponge thingy, the kind that you attach to a handle that you fill with Dishwashing Liquid, I just use it without the Handle, works great, also use a toothbrush for the hard to reach places. Razor Blade is great for the stubborn bits of algae that wont come off with the Scouring Sponge.

You could put the panels on Hinges, then screw to the steel frame, at least then everything is easily assecessable, then use those magnetic strip thingys like you have on cupboards to keep the panels closed. I had a Tank and Stand custom made about 15 years ago, stand was made out of 18mm MDF, you wont need it to be that thick as it's not going to be weight bearing. Had the stand Lacquered with a Black Gloss looks fabulous. Had no trouble with Water seeping into the wood at all.

Maybe post a pic of your stand the way it is now, so we can give you some ideas as to what to do with it

I'd definitely recommend going with the Cardinals, they're alot hardier than Neons, bit more expensive, but they do last alot longer.

Good Informative Link Thanks

Could be the differnce in the pH of the water your using, causing PH Burn. I had this will a couple of Discus I had shipped to me, looks terrible. The dead part of the Fins will turn white then drop off, and regrow. Lots of good quality water changes, and they will be all good in no time. If they start to fungus then I would use the Furan 2. Sorry to read about your sad news Had the same thing happen to my favourite Gold Severum a few years back, had 2 gold's in the same tank, they became quite territorial, one had ago at the other, the one being attacked swan sooo fast he hit head first into a big rock I had in the Tank, was so gutted. I even took him out of the tank and tried giving him mouth to mouth, hmmm probably sounds weird, but seemed like the right thing to do at the time. Blamed myself for weeks  The hurt will slowly get better, as they say "Time will heal"
