  1. I just done a search and found one that looks simple enough for either me or my husband to make. Only prob is now getting him to get off his arse and make it for me.
  2. and what is a hatch box? could you show me a pic or a link to what one would look like?
  3. Because the husband said it will look damn ugly in my main display tank. Which is the only one that is deep enough to do it. What about a light with a heat lamp in it? Would that do it? I have been told that thoes sorts of lights have UV in it which will cook the eggs? Just an idea that I thought I would get a second opinion with. I feel like I have gotten myself into more than I can handle here
  4. I was wanting them to feed to my fry as I want to make them grow quicker than they currently are so then I can start selling them either via trademe or to my pet store or I will become over run with fry that take for ever to grow. But I have also heard that feeding them brine shrimp only causes problems yet there are people that do it and have no probs at all. I was hoping to feed them to my fry today but its just not working and I am unable to get a heater and my husband is hitting the roof as he thinks I done this on purpose as an excuse to get yet another tank. So as you can see I am kinda stuck between a rock and a hard place. The container also says to keep them below 4*C so will in the fridge be ok?
  5. Oh on the box it has Water temp at hatching 28*C. Does that mean that they won't hatch untill the water is at that temp? They are supplied by Aquachem Christchurch NZ and an email Product of NZ
  6. So I can go with out a heater just that it will take probably two days for them to hatch?? The brand eggs that I have are called Aqua Chem, they are in a little black and yellow box. Well I will give this batch that I have done another day and if nothing has changed then I guess I will have to go to a heated system of some sort. Cheers
  7. yeah I could do that but it won't make any difference. The cylinder we have in our hot water cupboard is insulated and doesn't produce any heat at all. Looking into having to set up something else and put a heater in it
  8. I got me some eggs also on the weekend and I have got a hatchery all set up using an airpump and two coke bottles but my main problem is keeping them warm. I can't put them into the tank (container that is). I know that heat is important for fast hatching but is it necessary? Cheers
  9. I am always confused with mm so I always use cm and I have no idea how many cms make a ft or how many mm make a foot so apart from cms and inches on my tape measure I just use the cms lol. But I was never one to pass maths at school so... yeah lol
  10. LOL thanks for that comment but if I get another tank now my husband would probably divorce me which means all $$ out the window lol but once we get into our own house when we can afford to buy one my husband is talking about the "idea" of "maybe" letting me set up a little breeding setup so heres hoping Will keep my 2ft for my main display tank and a pile of small tanks to hold fry and seperate them and maybe another bare bottom 2ft to hold all the guppies that will be for sale but I have noticed that most LFS prefer more males than females as it makes a better sale point.
  11. I don't have any oscars or any other fish that will eat the fry that I cull so I am stuck with dumping them.
  12. so the fry tank should be about 20*C to help produce more males or the tank that the breeding guppies are in? I seem to be having a lot of guppy fry that I have to cull because their tails seem to end up all munted and they soon die and their dausal fin and anal fin just don't develop at all or they are hard up against the body and never open. Yet out of the same batch of fry I will have some that are totaly fine.
  13. any chance of having a pic of these worms culture things?? I have only heard about them on here but never seen them. Would be very interested.
  14. Well my golden female had more fry today but all I got out of her was 8 live fry and 8 unfertalised eggs. Last time I got 50+ fry out of her. Why such a low number this time? I haven't changed foods or anything. Totaly bummed as I would of liked another good batch of fry. Oh well always next month lol.
  15. I would be happy with a snake skin or two lol
  16. lol fair enough lol the sand that I have in there is dark but the pic doesn't show the light that is going into the tank and shows the sand as a lighter colour
  17. lol hummingbird we were talking about light not sun I know that sun can change the colour of someones hair a lot (went to hairdressing school) I just wanted to make sure that it wasn't going to dull my fry thats all
  18. I have no idea how much it cost for the fern but I know that a little clump of moss not much bigger than a $0.50 piece you pay $6. To me that is a lot of money for such a small piece of plant. Thats the main reason for why I don't want to use live plants in a fry tank. Even my main tank I have spent more on plants than I have fish and its just silly.
  19. Thanks for the info. I shall look into it. I really only wanted to make sure that the light was enough for my fry I wanted to make sure that with having lower light than the main tank that my fry wouldn't get any colours. Cheers again
  20. natural daylight doesn't get into that room as the curtians are always shut. This is because of the old wooden windows that don't shut properly and cause a mighty draft and its currently our bedroom which my baby is in also. I will see what I can find. The tank currently only has a 5watt light on it which has a kelvin rating of 2700 warm white.
  21. I can't get a hold of any fern or moss and if I was to put live plants in there then I would have to totaly change the light to accomodate the plants. Its just a cheap setup to house my fry instead of having them in the main tank where they get half eaten and then their little left over bodies hide behind the wood and rocks and cause me to have ammonia spikes and this way I can then feed the fry accordingly with out creating a mess in the main tank with 2-3 different types of food. Looking into doing hatching brine shrimp. Any fish that I decide to keep I will put into the main tank and the rest will be sold or traded via here, trademe and my LFS. I am also putting a divider into my main tank so then once the female has had her fry I can then select which male I want to breed her with. I just wanted to make sure that the light was ok for that tank and to still have the fry produce their colours. Thanks for the info tho Alan
  22. Ohh and my husband wanted me to brag about the light hood that he made. Its done with square pvc pipe and used the fittings out of a $10 warehouse light and put it in there which sits on top of the tank
  23. awesome. I will see if I can get a pic up of it so you can see how much light is in the tank.
  24. kk first I will explain the tank. It has plastic plants and its to raise my fry in it. Its only 20ltrs. Does it matter what sort of light you have? As my husband made me up a light hood but it has a energy saver bulb in it and the kelvin rating is only 2700 warm white. Does it matter that its a warm white and not a bright white for the fry? Will they still show their colours? Is there any such thing as a bright white in energy saver bulbs? No more than a 15w?
  25. I would love a snake skin!!!!! I had one but it died with in 12 hrs of buying it. My tank is 90ltrs (2ft) and I have a 20ltr fry tank in the process also. I would love to try crossing my golden female with my 3/4 black but I will have to wait untill she has droped her next lot of fry
