I have come to the conclusion that the addition of the bumble bee gobys is what has caused many of my guppies tails to be half eaten My most best looking male now has a huge chunk missing. I hope it grows back with out any distortion. I know that they eat the fry and all that which doesn't bother me to any big extent but my 3-4 month old males are being attacked Is it a colour thing like Bettas?? Anything thats flasher in colour than them they attack?
-
kk thanks for that. I do have salt added to the tank to make it brackish but I guess its not enough. One of the links in the other brine shrimp threads had a really easy to understand and assemble method for hatching these fish and chips of the fish world
-
no their tails form like a cresent moon shape with a little bump in the middle for an almost 3rd point.
-
awesome I was really worried as they look as if they are struggling to swim about the tank with their little tails going hard out but since they will grow back I feel better
-
I have noticed that two of my younge fry have what looks like their tails chomped at. Will they grow back or are they gonners?? I am not 100% sure if their tails have been attacked as they don't have any colours in them yet. They are lucky to be 3-4 weeks old or is this when their tails will change to other forms? Totaly lost!

I am curious about feeding brine shrimp to my guppies, fry and bumble bee gobys. Instead of making up a whole new tank (even if it is small) would it work if I was to just put a very very small pintch of it into the tank and let them hatch in there for the fish to feed off?? I could be asking for trouble with this but was curious. If I talk about setting up anything to grow something else apart from my fish that are in the tank I get growled at by the hubby lol so was curious if this would work ok or not.
-
I would be interested big time But depending on what nights and times will be very limited to me as I am still feeding Allan But I am sure we can work something out as it is only one night a month or something like that Wooo Hooo Lets go Southlanders
-
Yeah I know lol but was just curious as when to expect them to start having babies. They are the females from my first drop which was the easter weekend so they would be about 3 months now. I just want more purdy coloured fishies hehehehe and to be at a point where I can start giving/selling some to others

:-? I don't think people would want to buy algae covered plants lol. If that is the case then I will stick to just normal lights, Co2 and snails (to keep some algae at bay). Will see how that goes before I try anything else. My main mission now is to get all the other equipment with out spending a fortune for it! lol

are you meaning the purple tube as in a black light?? or am I totaly wrong here? I have never heard of a purple light or are you just meaning a light that is painted purple?
-
My female guppies from my first drop (easter weekend) seem to have real good black birthing spots. But I was wondering at what age will they actualy have babies? Since they are smaller than my mature females would their fry be extra small also??

With the lights. If I get a kelvin rating of 6500 and depending on legenth where would I be able to get them from?? I am guessing from the fish store they would be very high in $$. What about the likes of a lighting store or Mitre 10?? I am guessing two 100-150 watt heaters should be enough but correct me if I am wrong. I am not to sure how well insulated it will be but thats the next thing on the list. I have the tub now to get it insulated Once that is sorted then it will be a cover to allow lights fitted or to sit on top Going to be a slow process but hoping it will be awesome when fully running Cheers for the info

Ok I got the husband to measure it and found out the ltr size of the tub. It will hold up to 260lts. With that what wattage heater will be required and would two 60cm fluros be ok??
-
I have no idea what size the tub is exactly untill its measured up. The Co2 is going to be home made with the yeast method for now. I was looking at two 60cm fluros. Is there anything on trademe as to what you are talking about as I have no idea lol. Husband is a plumber so he should be able to get a sparky to do it for us if he doesn't do it himself
-
yeah my husband said that we can use the hot water wrap around the whole tub but I am not to sure about the hood as such yet and how difficult it will be to make and hold 2 60cms fluros. What about perspecis?? Would a sheet of that do for a lid and to get something to put the fluros on and just sit them on top like people do with their fluros sitting on top of the glass ?? I hope I am making sence here lol I keep losing myself

Well I got the container today. Only $20 for a fiberglass Shub (half bath but base of a shower box) Its a good 400-500mm deep but has a lip to one side so it will be lower and by the time the substrate is laied it will be around 200mm deep of water. This is the best deal that I have come across as we are also able to insulate it by boxing it up (like a free standing spa) and put pink bats inside My next question is....... Do you have to have a cover of glass over the top then lights on top of that? Or can you leave it un covered with hanging lights? I can get glass eventually for it but it will be a while as I will be needing some good legenths and good thickness so it will hold the weight. I will measure it up later to find out roughly how much water it will hold so you can help me figure out what wattage heaters will be required for this. Cheers

For the Co2 system I am just going to do two home made ones for now. It has made a big difference in my own tank so I am sure that 2 of them running in a planted tank would work just as well. With a home made Co2 system, will I be able to connect this up to a filter that had no media in it (used as a powerhead to move the water mainly) would this work to difuse the Co2 better than a bubble bell thingy??

yeah I thought that at first to but when I looked properly there was an actual hole in her stomach (just before the "poo hole") Its not very large at all but when I first saw it she had what looked like clear tubing hanging out (intestines) but when I put her in the breeding net/trap it had gone. I guessed it came off but the hole is still there so as you all say I will give her a few days. If she gets worse over the next 48hrs then it will have to be bye bye and get more female guppies! I got more Males than Females and I think the guys are getting a bit sick of competing with each other lol
-
Well I have seperated her off into the breeding trap with some floating plant. She seems happy enough and it would be a real shame to lose her as I have yet to keep any fry off her and she has some nice colours (very light) in her tail and would be nice to see what the fry would be like. But yeah I have got her aside to see how things go over the next day or two.
-
thanks for that. I was starting to worry about that hoping to go 60-90cm fluros

I have noticed one of my female guppies (due to drop soonish) has got a little hole under her tummy with what looks like some of her insides hanging out. What would cause this?? All I have is guppies and one B/N. I don't think the BN would of caused it as they have never bothered each other before and the BN keeps to itself. I already guess that shes a gonner as there is no way I can poke it back in but was wondering what would cause this? She had some babies about 1-2 weeks ago but she didn't look like she droped them all and was still pretty fat afterwards and is even fatter now. Should I put her in the breeding net and just see what happens? Or do I put her out of her misery now? She doesn't seem to be bothered by it. Shes swimming about and eating like all the others. Just be sad to lose yet another female. The males will start to get grumpy with each other if this keeps up. lol

Awesome feed back guys really helping a lot even tho some is a little confusing. I did take into consideration the 200mm size but was going to get a tub that allowed 200mm on top of the gravel. I am going to use a Co2 system (even if home made till I can buy a proper one) and get some fert or plant growth stuff for the tank from the pet shop Loving this guys keep it comming
-
Do you have to add carrots and beans?? Could you just puree up the heart and liver and freeze that? Would be nice to try for my guppies as its simple and easy to do from home
-
nah won't get a round one. Will get a shallow (200mm) square/rectangle one. Guess that would need two fluro lights? Now to get something that will hold the fluro and reflect the light.
-
Awesome **runs off to the warehouse right away** If I can get away with that that would be awesome. Apart from a filter and heater and substrate I should be set Oh yeah lol and a light What kelvin rating would be needed for plants? (hope I got the spelling right there)
