  1. Thankyou Jane, Caryl, and PJ. Glad it has FINALLY worked out. PJ, you have paid all the dues, it was up to the Treas. to forward on the $5 capitation that all but the Life Members have to pay to be affiliated to the membership of the FNZAS. Alan 104

    Pajama Cardinals

Just arrived back from a fishy trip in the BoP with Aquanut. One of our stops was a breeder of Bangai, and he informed me that they are a pairsome fish, not a schooling fish. Besides breeding them he also breeds Kuda seahorses for export, they go to the USA, Canadian and GB markets. Sorry, too dear for NZ customers. Also on his target fish are Pecula clowns, a lot of the ones you see in your LFS, could have come from his farm too. Alan 104
  3. PJ if your capitation fee hasn't been paid I'll be horribly urinated by the lack of action. Caryl should have the names sent to her from Jane, who should have recieved the capitation from EJ. Who was definately reminded by me. I still work behind the lines, just not in front. Alan 104

    Help Please!!!

A lot of ppl buy oxy weed for their goldies from the LFS. Where I am I just need to go to a local drain, river, or lake to get it. You could try blanched lettuce too. Alan 104

    Am I learning?

Not only will they get tired, but the amount of sweat, of course depending on the number and size of the fish, could turn the tank into a marine ecology. Not the best for lots of freshwater tropicals. Alan 104
  6. As can be seen by the white colour of the eggs, maybe the parents were thinking that they'd try again. Looks like a lot were infertile. "Let's give the kids some decent tucker." By the way, you are lucky to have got away with it this time, normally when cichlids want to lay and they have babies, they eat the fry before laying the next batch. I know what I'd do now, couple more days with Mum and Dad, then into a kindergarten for the fry. Alan 104

    Albino guppies

Good one Devon. $75 each?? Alan 104
  8. This the one Chakuna?? http://www.aquahobby.com/gallery/e_frenatus.php Alan 104
  9. Chakuna, if your Dad has a camera, get him to take a pic of it and then email Caryl with it. I'm sure that if you asked her nicely she'd add it to this thread for you. THEN you'll get some answers, and know exactly what your little fishy is. Alan 104
  10. Melanotaenia splendida, that's what I reacon. Alan 104
  11. So wot is the date Dave?? IMO your answer can be taken as the 5th or 12th. Alan 104
  12. Might pay to invite the police around for a look, before they come uninvited. Alan 104
  13. Swan plants aren't worth wasting time with on cuttings The seeds are very prolific and also very fertile. I thought I'd have maybe 20 or so grow. But as you can see from my previous post, I have 3 seed trays with 56 in each one, pricked out, and now up to their third or fourth leaf, about 75mm high. I have another 50/100 or so in the tray where I planted the seeds. An adult catapillar would eat a plant in about 10 minutes. Alan 104
  14. I think monarchs are poisonous aren't they?? Although wasps bowl themquite happily. Try feeding the caterpillars on pumpkin, they'll also eat the moth-catcher plant. At the moment I'm growing some 160 swan plants, but they are a bit small at the moment to help you out. Alan 104

    Daphnia

Try looking in some troughs on local farms. But do ask permission first tho. I use to check out the troughs thru One Tree Hill and Cornwall Park, when I lived in Jafa-land. There were a couple of good ones too, but you'll have to find them. 8) Alan 104
  16. Thanks Caryl. That rack that you can see in the top of the room to the right is piping looped backwards and forwards and acts as a type of heat exchanger, with the water being pre-warmed. The water was direct from the mains. Alan 104
  17. EJ had a 24 hour system but gave up on it as the flow thru wasn't enough to agitate the sediment and remove it. If you can locate a pic that Caryl tookof his room, you may be able to see part of his set up. Filter and solenoid is visible from memory. Alan 104
  18. AQUANUT, that Al lives in Chch and is an NZKA member. The reason the peat is stored at different temps is for you to figure out what temp produces what genders. for your different requirements. When you find out, write it down in your diary, you haven't got one?? Get one then, the written word lasts longer and doesn't change from the remembered word. (Ol' Chinese Proverb) Alan 104

    Gday everyone

Welcome dartzman. Just don't go getting them all at once. The rams can be a bit delicate to so I would think you'd have to build your tank around them. Alan 104
  20. How would they go on BBS Shell?? Or IS it Craig?? May have to kill them in freshwater first so as they can eat them as a type of good detrius (spp). Be worth while raisng them on wouldn't it?? Alan 104
  21. You could put spray bar onto you systems. They will spread the turbulance without decreasing you filtration volume. Keep them underwater to cut down on sound. By the way, let me be the first to welcome you to the forum. I'd offer you a cuppa, but I here you Aussies have a problem with that at the moment. Go to the welcome section and introduce yourself to the troops. Alan 104

    Fin Rot?

Here I go again, and I don't get a commision. Use methylene blue. Catch the fish, keep it in the net, use an eyedropper and apply a drop directly onto the affect area. Don't do this over the carpet, do it over the tank. release fish back into the tank after holding it in the net for a minute. It seems a long time, but they will last longer than that on the floor and they are being cradled in a wet net. Treating like this, you don't have the staining in the tank. But make sure you don't get any into the gills of the fish As far as the 1tspn per 20 litres of salt goes. mmmmm Leave the unopened bag of salt beside the tank, touching it of course, and IMHO, that's about what that dosage is worth. We commonly use one tspn per four litres with our killies. Alan 104
  23. Warren, to me, getting a new TV to oerate anywhere near correct. is technical for me. Now I'm expected to wire up my stereo thru it too, and hope that works??? Yeah well!! Alan 104
  24. Sounds like the boys covered it pretty well there Al. One is the old hobbyists way, time consuming but really getting into the hobby. The other a system used by Bryan Jomes of Auck. when he was inro commercial breeding. I think he improved his M/F ratio by feeding the females to his other fish. He used to supply HFF in Mt Roskil, plus his mates in the NZKA if they bothered to ask him about them. Also fish clubs that made visite to his establishment in Auck. He used rainwater, in a drum, that had a bag of peat sitting in it as his breeding water fo his tanks. Alan 104
