  1. Shiuh, I'd suggest that you fasten the unit back to the wall in case of earthquakes. This comes from one who knows a little about EQ's, or at least what they can do to a system like that. Alan 104

    New Tankmates

Yes thanks for that Paul. It is the one with the carpark up the side of it then. I just thought that there may have been another down that way. Three that I know of, have disappeared from down there over the years. Alan 104

    Books

Four has been translated too Caryl. Just did a search on them. Hey, do the volumes following Vol one have different fish, or are they the same with extras?? If so, would you suggest just to get the last volume available?? Or will I have to rob a bank and get the lot?? Thanks Alan 104
  5. It may not be neccessary for spawning them Jordan, but for them to hatch and survive could be a bit of a different story. It could depend also as to how far the parents are removed from their wild captured ancestors. Normally the nearer, the harder and more demanding. Put peat into an air operated corner, box filter, this will gradually bring down the pH and if you were to use half rain water, I'd see your chances improving with your breeding attempts. Good luck Alan 104
  6. Grass-hopper! (Bruce-C) You learn very quickly. And big stats, just don't make any mistakes and you'll retain your virginity. Welcome to the site. Hope you enjoy. Alan 104
  7. The same as in the human race Devon. We are all humans and can interbreed. The fantail and comet are both Cararrius auratus. Just that you'll loose the lines the types are. You'll get a mix of fry. Alan 104
  8. It gives off mico-organisms. Known as infusorians, which are produced naturally with this plant which also is a great refuge for fry. Infusoria can be produced artificially too. See elsewhere. Alan 104

    lagos babies

Just did some surfing and have come up with a pic that I think represents our A. striatum. http://www.bka.org.uk/BKA/SpeciesDetails.php?ID=88 Alan 104
  10. casey05, that is about the cruelest way to kill a fish. Giving it an underground tour of the city where it is cold, current flowing and dark, not to mention the rest of the added extras. Then when it gets to the "poo-ponds", it's poor little body rots away and any bacteria on it is transfered to the water and thence into our "pristine" water ways. Naughty girl. . Just throw it hard down onto the concrete path, they are dead instantly on contact, then add them to your garden as compost. Just hope tho that you have no more deaths and you won't have to make the hard decision. Alan 104
  11. They start life fueled by the energy stored in the eggs, but soon they must feed or perish. After the first week of life, they must move to a large container (plastic or glass—no metal) with a new water supply prepared using this formula: 4 liters of water 250 ml of rock salt 30 ml of Epsom salts 15 ml of baking soda Food: For food, a pinch of baker's or brewer's yeast once a week should be fine. Mark the water level on the container. As water evaporates, add more tap water—not salt water—to keep the salt concentration the same. Put the container near a window or under a light during the day and watch the brine shrimp grow. This is taken from off the web, from an educational site. Alan 104
  12. Monaro, I'd go for any that had breeding on their mind. Any way you can put a divider in till they get past that stage, which ever way they want to go?? Did you get the Nics from up Warkworth way?? Alan 104
  13. Welcome Kim and Dan. I guess I'm the one you should get in touch with about the killies and the NZKA. Hit me with a PM and we can go from there. We are starting to get a strong little group of killi-keepers down your way. Southernman is what I'd term our rep down that way. MTS, if you haven't sussed that one out is Multi Tank Syndrome, the title speaks for itself, I don't want to scare you off killies, but start with them, you will definately suffer excruciating pains from the MTS that the addiction brings on. The more species, the more tanks. You've been warned. Alan 104

See if you can find a post on this site from EJ, He is the Sec. Treas. tat you could enquire from him. If you still have a copy of the NZKA registration form, you'll also find his contact number. Sorry about that PJ Alan 104

    Killie eggs

Hi PJ, this is where the Species Controller should be answering, but as they don't seem to come on here any more I can only suggest at the moment to get in touch with kylefish02, he has had some photos up and also he has had spares on TradeMe. Caserole may also be able to help too. Those are the ones that I know of that are or have been, having a bit of success with them. To get their PM or email. go to the main Killie Thread, and scoll through till you find one started or last answered by either or both of them. Cheers Hope that helps PJ Have a good Christmas Alan 104

  17. We're coming. But it's Xmas, so be patient Alan 104
  18. I take it that an "airport somewhere" is in Scotland?? In NZ we use the term "pond-fish" when we are trying to aquire KOI. . A 'naughty' fish in NZ although freely available from our biggest waterway. A goldfish is a goldfish, is a goldfish. They, not matter what their color or shape, are still Carassius auratus. Ponding them, they will gradually revert back to dark coloured fish. Don't be a coloured g/f in a pond. You make a better target for a heron etc. Alan 104
  19. Only clean one filter at a time to, alternate them. Alan 104

    Free Microworms? :)

Shae said: Na-na-na-na-nah-naahhhh ! ! ! I agree Shae, but you can't beat what I've charged to some members on this forum. They got them for free. One of the recipients agreed to a swap but didn't come thu on the deal. It was going to be a starter culture of micoworms to a s/c of drosophila, wingless fruitflies. Maybe the person that agreed to that deal will send a Xmas present?? That doesn't mean I want requests for a freebee either, it cost ME for the post. Alan 104
  22. Give them a pen, paper, ruler and eraser, and tell them if they don't school with that lot, they'll have to sit on the "naughty seat" Alan 104 PS. Who said Ira's joking, that would actually work. Al
  23. Cath, when you go shopping for the Jullii, take a copy of a pic from the puta of the fish with you. You will find it almost impossible to get a TRUE Jullii in NZ. But best of luck with your endeavours. Alan 104

    Sick Cichlid

Get in touch with Caserole he has Apistos. Not normaly contagious, but don't leave in the tank to die and then the others dine out on it. You may be in trouble then. If I was you, I'd take it outside and pretend your Brett Lee bowling a bouncer. I understand it is tank conditions and something to do with the liver. Just carry on with the aquarium water changes and cleaning. Don't need any medication. Alan 104
