  1. I wouldn't touch one of those with a barge pole. In my opinion, for their size, they are one of the noisiest pumps I have seen. Our LFS had one, and because of the noise, had to cut a hole in the wall to put it in another room. Only a carbon vane pump I have was worse. For that I built a small insulated dog-box outside the fishroom to house it. The hose I used was normal garden hose, but I have just put in another 18m using the same system as Bill. Alan 104
  2. I connected up a garden hose to the pump similar to that, and then bled off with air-line connectors. Can't beat the quietness of that type of pump for the volume. Quieter than the normal run-of-the-mill aquarium pump. Alan 104
  3. Good one Matt. Now we want an organizer for an Auckland cell, and also for the Hawke Bay area, and the Wellie-wood area. Alan 104

Thanks SM. Problem solved, it is an ID of one of our Sth Is members. Alan 104
  5. Remind me not to go to that shop Viv, or at least to that person that sold them to you. MMMMMMMMM Alan 104
  6. Paradise fish can be quite aggresive little fellas, so be careful what you put them with. The males can also go hard on the females as well. Yes, you are correct, they don't need a heater, but a rise in temperature will improve the chance of breeding them. Not too sure if I'd winter them outside tho, especially where you are, compared with where I am. They are a bubble nester similar to the betta, so once the spawning is over, remove the female, Dad will do the work. Alan 104
  7. I'd vote for more females too. Alan 104
  8. Bit late now, but if you had of dropped your water level to 25% full, then your tank could have been fixed insitu. Sometimes it pays to have a top brace running long ways, or the centre brace wider(more glue surface), or put an extra piece of glass under the narrower brace, also increases the glue area. Yes the val does sulk at times, I think it prefers an alkaline situation, but I wouldn't bet my house on it. Alan 104
  9. That's exactly the same way I do it doodle, then finally scoop out the dregs with a steel concrete float. Alan 104
  10. Once again we have a new member who does not say the area they are from. I personally would like to see this a compulsory field to be entered. Why I say that is that people in your area could give you a hand with spare tanks etc. Any water that you will be replacing with will need to be aged, but there again, we don't know where you are or your areas water quality. If you wish to do it in stages, cut some small dividers, two of them, plunge into the gravel and remove the area required until all the base has been done. Or do as Jude says, rip it all out and rebuild. Make sure you have every thing sussed out before you move though. Don't handle your scaleless fish in nets, they tend to get white-spot very easily, capture them in a container with water in it, watch out for their jumping skills too. Alan 104

  13. Nope, none with the FNZAS anyway Shark. There is a fairly strong goldies group of breeders down taranaki way, or at least a year or so back there was. Alan 104

    Killie eggs

Penejane, put a couple of small fish into the setup while awaiting replies. This will get the tank cycling, then when your requests come through, the tank will be ready. Alan 104
  15. Where are you located SHARK and what are those type of comets?? Alan 104
  16. They will get use to the fridge use IMHO. Questions. Do ponds creeks rivers or puddles not have vibrations?? Don't worry about them. In fact, you may score some free heat from the fridge. Alan 104
  17. Yep, you guessed right there Paul. It is Kim. Alan 104
  18. Paul, when I saw a GBA breeders setup in Auck last year, I noticed that she had her pots sloping, but not like you!! She had them sloping BACKWARDS!! Made sense to, It was rather obvious when I thought about it. When/if the male gets frisky, the eggs don't roll out to the danger area where they could get eaten, or the fry in the wriggler stage. The male will keep the gravel or sand out. This idea will work for other species as well. In fact, today, I'm going to change the pot I have in my kribensis tank. Makes sense huh?? Alan 104

    Egglayers

LL, If you can look at the BW's and imagine them without fins. The male is the one like a rugby ball, and the female like a soccer ball. Females are plumper and bigger then the males, all things being equal, and the fish conditioned to spawn. Alan 104
