    Help please!!

The trough is an old one aqua, so the lime should have leeched out by now. Alan 104
  2. I feed mine on luncheon, cut into 5 -10mm cubes and scattered over the surface. To feed, just pick up a cube and put into a worm feeder. When the worms have been eaten the cube is returned to be consumed by the worms. I use a washing machine bowl. On the southern side of the house outside. Alan 104
  3. I'll tell you if they do Al Alan 104
  4. Well I got some angels offered to me thru T/M, finally picked them up last Fri and set them up in a 600mm tank in my unheated fishroom. Tonight, at 7.00pm they were flat-out laying eggs. So Matt, if you are lurking, the first bridge has been crossed. The black marble is the female, and the gold marble the busy little boy. I have left an overhead 25w bulb going in the room for the night light. The temp would be lucky to be 17oC. Alan 104

    Help please!!

That many fish and raw water, it is sure to be non-cycled and ammonia will wipe them out. You'll need to do water changes IMHO. Alan 104
  6. The reason the male is removed is because the female can get REAL viscious with him and may kill him. The male tends to guard out side of a 150mm approx radius that the female covers. So watch out for her giving him the bash. Alan 104
  7. Egg layers don't do what you are suggesting B&K, only the Livebearers do that. Their act is spawning. Alan 104
  8. If you can't find where to change your profile, just go to the top of the page, click on "profile", look on the second section and go to the sixth box. It doesn't need your full address but location would be nice. Thanks Alan 104
  9. I know   8) Alan 104
  10. Where are you Bradwats?? Please fill in your location field in your profile. Thanks. The meth. blue referred to by B&K will also kill any remaining whitespot in the Q tank in time. Alan 104
  11. I have found an easy way to get rid, or at least, make a big dent in the snail population using lettuce, tied to a piece of string and a small piece of lead to make it sink, left overnight, then removed in the morning, and dropped into a cup of salty water to kill the snails attached to the leaf, and if there is still enough leaf left, returned to the tank to get more. Repeat if necessary. Works well IMO Alan 104

    Pacu Tank???

Checking out "polystyrene" on T/M and came across this. http://www.trademe.co.nz/Home-living/Pe ... 558059.htm Looks like the Seahorse farm has closed down in Napier. Cheap as fo a tank that size. Good excuse to clean out the garage. But I'd have to definately get my solar heating going with this mother. Can just see it - - " Go Swimming With the PACUS" protection provided. Alan 104
  14. Marty, have you got any of those Lagos coloured up yet?? What ratio of gender did you get?? Mine are just starting to colour up, they need to go into an observation tank to ascertain their ratio. Same with the Striatum. Did I say that my first P82 babies have themselves now got babies?? Went well for the first few days of spawning then stopped!! Stopped completely. Almost ready to put down the peat that I have the SJO's on. Eyes are gazing up at me, begging, begging. Put down 38 eggs, have removed four that fungused, so hopefully will score just over 30. The ones I have water incubated appear to hatch with some problems of getting out of the egg shell, even going to the stage of having to blast them out using my pipette, and then stay on the bottom of the tank for two weeks or so, before swimming or dieing. I think that the hatch will be better for the peat hatchers, than the water hatchers. Here's hoping. Alan 104
  15. This is a reply to BG's remarks under "a little p-ed off" thread. BG said: Yes BG, you are still a member of the NZKA. Yes there is an AGM coming up in April. Easter weekend as far as I know, and up your way too. EJ should have been in touch with you since I resigned as Pres and Ed. Have you changed your email addy and/or your home address?? See PM I have sent you. Alan 104

    Thermometers

I go for the normal thermeter you'd find in any LFS, but the trick is to compare all of them. You'll have highs, lows, and a group between. Choose one of these and forget about being so pedantic about the temperature that you want for your fish. I check mine against a dairy thermometer that are normally VERY accurate and meke the mental adjustments necessary for any difference in the bought one. Another good thermometer is the home brew ones, bigger, more expensive, but if you check the temp of a group of them you'll get one to suit your needs. Easy to find to if you put it down somewhere due to it's size. Alan 104
  18. What's wrong with an undergravel filter at both ends. Cheap, does the job, fry friendly. Alan 104
  19. I made some up for my tanks using lengths of spouting. Should be able to get a 1.2 piece from a friendly plumber, and two end caps, left and right. Paint to suit you decor, and I used a spray can of chrome paint for the inside to improve reflection. Pegasus used to have parts for the units. Email or PM him for availability and price. You'll also need some electrical cable and a plug. I prefer a tap-on plug cause the light always stays plugged in, you'll also need a button switch, mounted on the unit or an inline switch on the power cable. Alan 104

    Clove Oil

Hold the fish still in a plastic bag. They make for a better target and can't slip away. For customers that wanted their big fish put down, I have used electricution. It was very dangerous for me and I wouldn't recommend it. Lethal for the fish tho. Alan 104
  21. I just LUVVVVVVVV my little Rams-horns They save me so much with my fry rearing in the small receptacles that I use. If they didn't clean up, the pollution would overwhelm the babies. I still give the babies a minimum of 50% water change, sometimes close to 100% per day. The ones (snails)that are the pits are what I term the "millions snails" They have the same shape shell as a ramshorn, but instead of carrying it at right angles to the glass, they carry it parralel, only grow to a max of5mm, but you can guess their breeding habits from the name I have dropped on them. surface film

If you were to drag a sheet of paper across the surface, that should remove it. We freshies use this method, and I'm told it is a build up of proteins. Do you have a skimmer?? Alan 104
  24. What does it smell like? Has it a strong acidic smell, like strong vinegar? If not, don't use, take it back and swap what you haven't used for Acetic cure, Clear. Alan 104

    An idea for fry

And to conserve the power usage, get some 50mm polystyrene for all around the tank. Bottom, sides, top at night time or cold days. Alan 104
