  1. One of the easiest ones to tell. If you know what to look for. The female has a black spot on her dorsal fin. The male has brighter colours and definately no spot.
  2. Well, I did get a complaint from one of the USERS here about waffling on, so what you get is what you get. I don't even think that the question asked has been answered yet!!
  3. http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/viewtopic.php?t=2406 Try going here to get your pics up chickiejo
  4. That's why I asked if there were other fish in the tank Stu, apparently my post is invisible.

That does the same thing, acidifing the water. But who wants to be red faced without excercise??

    dageti eggs

The reason is that with the eggs taking so long to hatch I put down to the egg shells being too thick. The hatch method is :- Yes, even temperature. Yes, movement. But the secret ingredient is the microworms. They create an acidic environment which dissolves the egg shell. That is why it is imperative that they are put into the bowl of water on your return, otherwise they will die from oxygen depletion. I learnt that one day when | was distracted and I lost the whole tube. You learn quickly with errors like that. I hatched 100's of medaka eggs this way, ensuring that the babies were all the same age. Oh!! Forgot to mention it, you get a work out that's healthy for you as well. Bonus.

If as Alan says, have they got babies inside of them, this Alan says put them into a small medical vial of water with microworms in it, and go for a walk around the block with the vial in your pocket. On your arrival home, tip the contents into a bowl of aquarium water, and you should have babies.
  9. PM Herefishyfishy or Freakyfish - Frenchy. They may have contact with the southern boys, as they are from Q'land, so maybe they wont, but it's worth a try.
  10. Wot?? Ya scared of them Amazonian??
  11. Make sure that the silicone is acidic cure. It should have a VERY strong vinegar smell. Don't breathe the fumes, and use in ventilated area.
  12. Give your second tank a water test, should be okay. With the patch it will be ample to cut a piece of glass that will overlap the hole by about 10 to 20mm and just silicone it on. Make sure that the outside of the patch has the glue spread around neatly after fixing the patch to stop any water ingress, that could then harbour algae and cause the patch to leak in time, possibly.
  13. Go for it Sharn, but remember we have quakes here and maybe you should consider fastening your stand to the wall of the house.
  14. Above are three different discriptions of your fish brishe, can you please go back to where you found them on the internet and find the scientific name. Then post it in here on this thread, or leave the URL of it so we can have a look at it. If you were to let us know what that is it may help with us trying to help you. Thanks
  15. brishe, go back to the net and find the BIG name and write that down on this thread. We'll know exactly what you are talking about then Common names are misleading often.
  16. You'll soon have little chickens. About 6 days called wrigglers, then another 4 days and they'll turn into bantams and start free swimming, THAT is the time you can start feeding them. The parents will act like clucky chooks.

    Question ...

For peace of mind get in the professionals and have the window sills and around the doors sprayed. I have no idea of the cost, but my wife has two friends who use this and they have no more problems at all. The cost of the numerous flyspray cans used would help defray costs and I'd think a lot safer for the family than breathing in fly spray. I fly swat and feed the fish with the mangled bodies, saves them chewing too much.
  19. Just a by, guys and gals The Q word is spelt Quarantine
  20. I notice the date was the 17th of Jan was when you reported their spawning, so I'd suggest that those babies would be from that spawning and have been hiding in the plants. Thereby having the size the are when you first saw them.
  21. I agree Paul with those sentiments. As one of the foundation members of the BSA I was sad to see that as a person left the FNZAS or died, their efforts were deleted. So yes, a big hooray.
  22. Good one Paul, a first for NZ I would think. G'luck with raising them.
  23. Good advice there for you fluffypants. Welcome aboard. Visions of you in a bunny suit with that name.
