  1. That's the one Wok First time they haven't had a fish on the cover I think. Just got mine yesterday, they sent Dec and Feb early in the New Year, so I said "where's the Jan. edition of mine??", and they sent it straight away.
  2. Reminds me of another front tank I've seen on my travels.
  3. Also being bred in large captive numbers in Asia. Hormones are used there to get them going
  4. It is probably just nature taking its course and slowly decaying the wood via this method
  5. I'd advise against the Golden Algae eaters Chinese Algae Eater They can develop into real trouble makers
  6. Deeper bodied for the female and slimmer and brighter for the male. Problem is, you need a group to choose from, and most LFS won't be stocking big schools of $40 fish. I wouldn't think anyway.
  7. Foul evil thought crosses my warped mind. I got one of the gentleman. Haven't I Brad. Do you mind if I show the peps??
  8. I have found that the late developers always grow on to be a bigger fish. If a male develops way early, he will invariably be a runt IMO
  9. About 10 to 15 minutes, I can't really recall, but it trusted me implicitly and didn't fight at all.
  10. Don't know how an aro would go in a plastic bag when aroused. I had a silver shark go straight thru one and land 2 metres away But I have handled a huge (2'er) giant goramy in a wet towel while we drove it back to it's owner, in Palmie North after a fish show there
  11. It does say for pond use!!! Careful
  12. Couldn't ya stand the heat Shell?? Or have you left Craig and come home for your Fronnies??
  13. I sounded like that when I got my new munchers.

    splash tetra's

Yes they have been in NZ but I haven't seen them for a year or so
  15. Greame, they aren't "harmless" They are a real bad predatator. I put some into a pond on my brothers farm to control mozzies, Within three years, there were no more tadpoles or frogs. They'd wiped out that population of the little green fellas.

    Discus eggs

Turn ya lights right down. You don't need them unless you have plants, but you could have a low wattage light for night, so that they are not completely blacked out at night.
  17. Well before you venture into the great unknown, I must warn, or should I say, remind you of what happened several years back when the Molly Hunt was intimidated by some local maoris. Well apparently this was not a one off. I have been in touch with a friend in the aqua education business and he sent me this I think I'd be inclined to inform the local constabulary of your intentions, just in case. But don't let them beat you. Just pay the $70 per fish -- - - - - -- Yeah right
  18. Shane, I have just emailed a mate of mine, who just happens to be the writer of that article on the Taupo Mollies and this is what he says about your fish All look like Common Bullies to me. Gobiomorphus cotidianus So there you go, nystery solved for you.
  19. Welcome to our fishie pond Shortee, and you too Duncan. Don't forget to ask what ever you like(within reason), no questions are stupid, except the unasked ones. Enjoy your paddle with us.
  20. If you get it Tim, I have those young reds coming on. At least one sexable pair showing now.

PJ, what was the price tag on those killies at the LFS? Thanks

Tropheus, what is your interest in these? Are you an importer? Most suppliers overseas have a very limited selection to choose from. The Asian suppliers are worse still, as they have higher ambient temperatures to contend with, which only suits certain species. To obtain a fish of choice, is to know breeders of the killie fish species that you are after and go from there. For several years now, I have been trying to locate a importer who will land our (NZKA) fish that we obtain and ship to NZ and have them go thru their quarantine room. An almost impossible task at a reasonable cost. We have had a quote of $800 per tank, plus MAF fees, food, labour, and no care responsibility. Recently a cost of $300, plus plus etc. We don't expect this for nothing but I know that the fees have to be paid by the importer for their fish and ours would still come under that banner, so that cost could come off to start with. We would have to pay for the first check of course when they are landed, unless of course the orders were combined at the point from whence they are sent. Some of the NZKA members have excellent contacts overseas with absolutely fantastic fish, that we'd lve to get hold of. As far as permitted species, about the only ones we can't get are endangered species and ones considered a threat in our waters, in other words, that will survive in cooler conditions. Over the years we have had heaps of species in, but as the number of a species increases, the object of keeping them going is left to the next fella, and soon you run out of them and the species disappear. We did have a system whereby a spedie controller with the members agreeance, would take responsibility of one or two species, and more or less be the bank for that fish. This system has completely crashed now due to several reasons, one of which is the apathy of the people owning the fish to fill in census forms sent out normally twice a year. Then when we have sent them in there is no feedback to follow up on what species could be in trouble of disappearing from NZ. Glenn, the President of the NZKA should have the relevant information that you require re the species, and I'd suggest that you try phoning instead of emailing, I'm not sure, but she may be having problems with her computer. Aquanut who trades on that big dealing site in NZ has a very good setup for breeding, that I can attest to as I visited him last night. He has almost all the species that are common or slightly hard to get for sale and I'm sure that as a member of the NZKA he'd cut you a good deal. I hope I've answered your queries, and haven't deviated off the track too much. There could be a slight glimmer of hope as far as importers are concerned. One of my suggestions to a local importer was to set up our own tanks, as we don't need their huge import tanks for our fish, but negotiations fell down with them, but I'm talking with others about a similar system. Just have to wait and see what happens. Please read NZKA when you see WE and I, as having been a member of the club for many years it is in their interests, and that of the hobby that I persue this goal of importing
