  1. try feeding them a lot less at a time. If you are only feeding them once a day, dividing the amount by four, feed them four times a day. They may be pigging out. I feed "trout pellets", crumbles. A New Zealand made food used in the trout, salmon, and goldfish farms here in NZ But this has to be watched as far as the amount goes too, especially if it is freshly baked. Alan

    heater problem

The way I understand the electrodes wear is for one to become concave, the other convex, by holding the points together with emery paper between them, then pull paper out, it takes off the high spots on each one. Repeat several times, and the surfaces are dead flat and shaped to its opposite. Alan

    heater problem

Have you tried puling the heaters to bits, and giving the electrodes a rub down with emery paper?? Alan
  4. I take it that the guppy you got is a female. When livebearers are moved close to birthing time, they will often abort the young. This is one reason the hang-on traps are no good. I prefer to let the girls have their own, heavily planted tank to do their thing. Remember when you put her back with the boys, they can be pretty relentless at wanting to service her (what a dumb term). At times the attention is too much, and she will die. So keep an eye on her. what are hefflelumps? Is that what boys get when they are older and get the mumps?? Alan
  6. High light brings out the reds  like dat Alan
  7. I was wondering about that Matt. I've re-read what I had posted etc, but couldn't see what gave you that idea. Had some more leopard fish appear today. Kewl Alan
  8. I warned u Peter How are you getting on at setting out the garage? I haven't been able to use my garage for SOOOOOOO long. Can't remember when. So I built a carport after years, of parking the vehicle in the weather. MMMMMMMM may be able to keep goldfish in the carport. Alan. PS I have got one light S/S and one dark, and I'm keeping the two lots separate. Oh no!, what have I started. Al
  9. Hi Peter, I've got several batches of babies coming on from your yellow strain, BUT, my male has gone to the big aquarium in the sky. So, soon I'm going to have a lot of viable virgins. Any show of picking up another male from you please, he'll have the time of his life here. Guaranteed. I got mine from you when Waikato visited you, I think you'll remeber me. How could you forget? Alan
  10. I believe that the egg mass will be from the blood worm fly. It looks a bit like a mossie, but doesn't bite. The egg raft of mosquito is about four mm long, two mm wide, dark brown, floats on top and is bent like a banana, hence the name 'raft'. If squeezed between the fingers in water, it will break into 100's of tiny segments, the eggs. I use the rafts in newly ,well, a few days old, killies, it is like a meal on the hoof for them. They change from a wriggler, having only one breathing tube, from the end of its body, to a 'tumbler', breathing from two tubes of its head. From this state it backs up to the surface, s plits its back open and emerges as an adult mossie. It uses its old body shell as a float as its wings dry, then when ready off in search of a feed of blood, which it must have prior to it having the ability to lay more eggs. One good thing tho, only half the mossies bite and suck blood. Wouldn't you know it ! ! Yes, It's the female. Alan
  11. Thankyou Andrew, Yes, I believe it IS appropriate to post Floris' passing. He was a great supporter of Killiphiles in NZ, and a member of that club and the Federation for many years. and in THAT circle he will be missed. Another link out of our chain of killi-keepers. Maybe the FNZAS could show their sadness in his passing, in the death of a Fish Keeper, and supporter of the NZKA and the FNZAS, in an appropriate way. Just a thought. RIP Floris Alan
  12. By the sound of it, they are the maggot, I call the 'septic tank' maggot. Is it about 10mm long with a tail the same lenth? Course that depends how mature it is. That's about it's full size. They are okay to feed to your fish. A bonus. Alan
  13. ballistic, if you join a fish club down there you will get it automatically. The cheapest, but not neccessarily the "cheapest" club to join, is the NZKA, only $15, and that includes registration with the Federation. Get in touch with Andrew Broome, and he will fill in the details for you. Alan NZKA 104
  14. Bikie, not sure how much water you are talking about. But how about next time you do a change, to have a few buckets handy, squirt your water into them, that releases heaps of chlorine, then leave to stand for 24 hours. No need to use any added extras then at all. Do you clean your filter as well, and if so, how do you clean that Alan
  15. Hi Caryl from the BoP. The mail system works up this way too. Arrived yesterday, and everything stopped while I sat down and read it. Thanks for another excellent effort. Boy, I was tickled pink at the effort your club does at Xmas. If only all clubs could be half as enthusiastic, the hobby would be in a bubbly condition. Congrats on the Xmas Parade. Your tank crawl. Your magazine. Alan
  16. It's not the car you have to worry about, it's the driver. I use to cart saltwater for my setup, and on the first trip very quickly learnt to take hairpin bends a LOT slower than normal, a lot slower. The drum wasn't tied, fell over and almost went thru the side of my car. It was only a smal car too, a Fiat Uno. But I could still carry two of those drums, but from then on, tied them in/on securely. I haven't got a salty up at the moment.
  17. Take the wings of the fruit flies Interfecus Turn them into hops and walks Na Just joking. But !! You can get the wingless f/f tho.
  18. Don't we all Harry If you find any, let me know please. Haven't seen them around for awhile now. There are N. guntheri around tho.
  19. I've had half-beaks and bred them too. The babies are large, can take BBS straight away, the parents should be removed after the safe arrival of the babies. The tanks should be heavily planted, and placed in a position where the fish can see you coming and don't get a fright, for they are prone to crash into the other end, don't bang doors, and keep a lid on their home.
  20. do you shift your tanks with you each time Warren? If so the removal guys will be doing well. Is this your second shift since the Bay Big Auction??

    Just a Hello

Welcome aboard Wokey, I too am interested in what you have bred. Good going, what are you going to do with them as they mature. I tell ya, this hobby can be an obsession and you'll end up with heaps of tanks and large power bills
