  1. I was considering it as an option cause the only rock i have seen so far has just been unexciting lumps. I like the branching you can achieve with making your own and i still really like the terraced, plate like rocks of someones tank in another forum. *sigh*
  2. my husband *BREATHES * RC aircraft, as well as eating them for breakfast, dreaming about them and spending every last dollar on them   He does tutors at the local club and has like 15 years of obsessive knowledge to pass on. He has about 17 planes in various stages including electric and if he can't help ya he sure could pass you on to someone who can. pm me if ya wanna get in touch. *and i thought i was bad with the fish  *
  3. -Anyone here made their own live rock? Any tips/recipes? not as soon as i would like. dang fortnightly pay
  4. oh i like the sun corals too!!
  5. Am in the process of paying off a Red sea max tank. Been throwing around ideas as to what to fill it with and what sort of rock structure i would like to do. I'm thinking i would like 1 x Clam 1 x Mandarin 2 x Clown fish OR Cardinals of some sort bangaii or pyjama 1 x Shrimp 1 x Starfish likely a brittle star some montiporas and a xenia are a must too i would love to have xmas tree worms too but am not getting my hopes up about them. I would love to get the cool and weird stuff but I am more worried about overstocking, incompatability and choosing fish that will get too big for the tank. Have heaps of questions........... -Can you shape rock? -Like can i hack away at the rock from the pet shop with a hammer and chizel or something to shape it the way i would like? -Is it worth doing it that way or is there an easier/better way? -Is a mandarin better in a tank by itself or can one live easily with ocellaris clowns? of course assuming there is a good supply of pods? -Anyone here made their own live rock? Any tips/recipes? -Porous rock is better than dense/solid rock right? -What about heavy vs light weight? -Could porous rock mean more Pods? more questions to come LOL!!
  6. so would i be better off chosing between the mandarin and the clowns/cardinals? i suppose i should go start my own thread.........

  11. Ah tail shapes are the easy bit! Simply put - Crown tails are anything really spikey Plakats are shortfinned fish, easily confused for females Doubletails have 2 tails Half moon is when the upper and lower edges of the tail span 180 degrees. HM bettas can almost look like a full circle shape when fully flared. have straight sides to tail like a capital D Over Half Moon (OHM) is exactly the , Anything over 180 degrees Deltas have symmetrial triangle shape tails less than about 120 degrees Super Deltas are anything between a delta and a half moon Veiltails are the common shape found. they have short rays at the top of the tail and longer rays at the bottom Round tails have rays that are all the same length This site has good explaination of a few tail types http://justbettas.home.insightbb.com/finnage.html
  12. lol Yeah. what did you use to think it was? You learn something new every day so now you can cross that off your list of things to do today!
  13. Hi there yeah tank is still going well. I did lose a male a few weeks ago but still got a couple in there. Have introduced 7 teenage bettas to the tank last week and everyone seems to be getting along fine
  14. I gather this guy is a NZer judging by the user name and that the bird is named "Tui" See the other clips by this guy too.
  15. I get the impression so far that there will be a strong "Totally Tanked" influence at Conference this year
  16. I wrote this as a summary of what one of my books has to say about Dropsy for another forum but could be useful here too.
  17. i would be inclined to agree. i am fairly sure it is a haplochromis/Dimidiochromis of some sort http://www.thetropicaltank.co.uk/Fishindx/dimid_compress.htm Looks big, ugly and nasty.
  18.  It is comments like that which can "turn a frown upside down"
  19. couple of AshVegas (Ashburton) folks will get a fishy surprise in their mail box in the morning It is really fustrating that i get to see the mags but am not allowed to read it yet I will be really grumpy if i don't get mine tomorrow
  20. yeah that is a really good one. I recently came across this one and thought it was excellent too. Includes a lot of the newer colour variationsas well http://www.vanriel.myadsl.nl/BT-AAB.htm
  21. some catfishes and perhapes other fish like hiding in leaf litter. It is something that probably isn't thought about much. Not all fish come from a place with tidy gravel as their substrate. And the decomposing matter can be a nice way to make a tank a bit more like home for them. Can alter the pH and give your water that nice brownish colour like wood that is leaching tannins.
