i guess that doesn't mean they won't still give it a try!!! I can't decide whether to say congrats or not! How about if they hatch we will all jump up and down and yell "hurray!!" Still must be pretty cool to watch their behaviour. They must be very happy in their tank!

I found that if you have a stupidly huge amount of time on your hands you can sift some pretty cool stuff out of "crusher dust" I bought a bag of it from Oderings (i think) and sat and sifted and rinsed it until i had a nice tank full of fine stone chip and another tank with nice sand. I used a colinder over a bucket to sift out the chip and then the stuff left in the bucket i just rinsed and stirred and rinsed and stirred until the water ran clear.

MERRY CHRISTMAS Was woken at 5.30am to the sounds of two little girls playing. all i want for xmas is to crawl back to bed
-
I am working until 1am tonight and thinking of heading off to work around lunchtime. All those xmas cards have to be sent!!! WHY???? do you all have to send SOO many xmas cards!!???? The job is tougher when you have a team of 10ish and a couple pull a sicky, a few more are on leave and there is no-one else left to call in. overtime is being dished out like crazy and it is the busiest time of year. Thing i am disappointed about is that i am going to miss out on putting my 2 girls to bed and hyping them up about santa coming It is the first xmas where both of them are old enough to understand what is going on.

Dispelling a myth!! Most fish DON'T get "pregnant"
Loopy replied to Loopy's topic in General Breeding
?? So i am right to think "gravid" is the same as "pregnant"?? in a general sense i am of the thinking that egglayers can't be pregnant? (self-doubt and confusion starting to kick in) We can all run aroung saying "yay!!! my guppy is pregnant!!!" The bit i puzzle over is if i got all excited and wanted to say "omg!! my angel is __________!!!!"...............full of eggs??? is there a word for this????? i have tried looking around for a word for this but haven't had any luck. -

*woot* yeah we could start a whole new thread for all the slang terms for being "knocked up" But being the O.C.D freak that i have been accused of (not by anyone here though *yet* ) I find it hard to sit back and see people using the wrong word for something even if it is just because the right word is not know. I don't even know if there is a proper scientific term or word for a female fish that is "full of eggs" !! educate me!!! -
Dispelling a myth!! Most fish DON'T get "pregnant"
Loopy replied to Loopy's topic in General Breeding
yeah that term is used very commonly for live bearers too. Gravid is the fishy way of saying pregnant. *note* All my quotes are from wikipedia -
Many people out there seem to be confused about the terms to be used in regards to the state of their fertile females of many various species. A simple definition of pregnant/pregnancy is Please note that an egg is not an embryo or fetus until it has been fertilised(sp?) A livebearer (guppy, molly, swordtail, platty etc) may be labelled "pregnant" Most other species of fish (and we can include axolotyls too) will generally be described as being "full of eggs". I am not confident in adding reptiles and frogs to this list as i don't know enough about their reproduction to comment. SO "pregnant" = Daddy has done his job already!! "Full of eggs" or "not pregnant" = Daddy has got work to do!!! I am happy for anyone to elaborate or correct me in anyway (even my spelling  ) Or ask questions!!! Ya gotta learn somehow!!!

Everything went smoothly and there were no dramas (well except when i thought we had lost slightly blue   ) And thank you to everyone who came along to enjoy the day. December Tank Crawl for ChCh Totally Tanked
Loopy replied to carznkats's topic in FNZAS & Afflilated Clubs
Ok Details for the tank crawl are as follows We will be heading off from Organisms at 1pm on Saturday 1st of December. We aim to visit 7 locations and finish up at Bdspiders for tea. Looks like there will be plenty of tanks and fish to look at. Bring a plate or a gold coin donation towards tea. Any questions fell free to ask and everyone is welcome of course! -
Sony walkman mp3 player. ($150 - $200ish) has radio, rechargable battery(lasts about 12 hours i think) good sound (imo) and the battery is charged by usb. So every time you plug it in to the computer to put more music on it charges it's battery. And it's the size of a cigarette lighter so easy to lose. I love mine to bits The only negative thing i have found is the on switch always get knocked in my bag so i often find i have a flat battery when i go to use it. But i have now got a little container to slip it into so that doesn't happen any more

Breeding Siamese Fighters(just released the female)

bah!! no need to get picky!! lol! never could get my imperial measures right. 200 Centimeters = 6.56167 Feet Rough enough for me  I really dunno , just the 2 could be alright in there. When we first got our dollars we got all ten as adults all at once and the biggest tank we had was a 4ft by 1.5 x 1.5 250L which we bought at the time for the dollars thinking they would be ok in it. We were very wrong. The tank was far too small for them, they would freak everytime someone moved near the tank and swim full speed from one end of the tank and back again but they wouldn't stop before the glass, they would smack at full speed into the ends of the tank. And they are like sheep and all follow a leader so we had 10 big fish smacking themselves on each end of our tank. we put newspaper on the ends of the tank to see if that would stop it but it didn't, we tried covering the tank to make it dark and see if that would calm them but that freaked them cause then they couldn't see but could still feel vibrations. And everytime we would peek in to feed them or just have a look they would throw a spaz. We couldn't do anything that wouldn't stress them. But an answer came in the form of hearing someone wanting to sell a large tank (2m x .6m x .6m 660L + sump)at a pet shop one day and doing some very quick thinking we bagged ourselves the bargain of a fantastic and very well made tank. Needless to say the moment the tank was up and running and the dollars were put in they became different fish all together. It was really amazing to see just what a difference it made to have them in a bigger tank. They are so much fun now. They are exceptionally nosey; they have to check EVERYTHING out  utter pigs, fast, bold and their conga lines can't be beaten!

As far as i am aware NO fish "grow to the size of the tank". That is an old wives tale which is a poor excuse to stunt their growth and not let them live to their full and happy potential. And if the seller *was* confused with pacu then to me that is even worse as pacu get much much bigger than silver dollars and should not be in a tank that size. This ad actually made me quite sad as silver dollars are right up there as one of my all time favourite fishes. To think that these people have those dollars in a 2ft tank where i imagine they would not really have the space to swim as they do naturally and don't have the water volume which seems to be a key factor in making them secure in their environment. My school of dollars (10 fish) were not happy until we got our 6ft (2meter) tank for them and i recommend that that is the minimum size for a school like what i have got.

December Tank Crawl for ChCh Totally Tanked
Loopy replied to carznkats's topic in FNZAS & Afflilated Clubs
I have made a tentative list of those who have expressed interest in the tank crawl. But it is a bit hard at the moment working out the difference between the interest in looking at others fish and showing off your own fish. So I think to get times and a planned sequence of events we will need to know confidently whos fish we are visiting and where they are located. So i will ask if everyone who is happy to have a bunch of us come round to gawk at your fish can let me know please? Perhapes a PM with your address and if you are not very flexible for time let me know what times you are available. Also if you need a ride let me know so we can help arrange that too.
