  1. Sorry i know that some of you probably don't beleive me when i say that our silver dollars are spawning like crazy but they are. We have 10 large (about the size of a typical saucer) fish in a 600 liter tank. they were only moved in there a few days ago. i have been sitting and watching these fish mating over and over again, they have been going at it like crazy for about 6 hours. The males were chasing the females up and down the length of the tank. Two males would come up, one on each side of a female, and "sandwich' her between them. One of the males would manage to wrap his anal fin around the vent of the female and the pair would quiver vigourously together for a second. When they stopped quivering the male would flick his anal fin and between 3-30 eggs would be released. I am going to try video taping it tomorrow if i can so i can prove it. but i haven't got a video camera yet (getting one off my parents)
  2. If a fishes eggs go white or milky this generally means they are dead or infertile right?
  3. Thanks guys. This is the third lot of eggs. The first lot came about a week fter we got the Severum. All fry were removed to a different tank and are doing fine. The second spawning was unsuccessful as the eggs vanished too early. Fingers crossed we can spot these after they upgrade from wrigglers to swimmers and remove them.
  4. I feel so special! our severums are busy laying eggs right in front of us. 1 problem we might have is our large red spotted plec might eat them. We would move him but don't want to upset mummy and daddy fish. Has anyone got any ideas as to how to distract a plec long enough to let the babies hatch??
  5. Thanks it is really nice to know we will be welcome. Have been busy taking lots of photos of all the tanks so we can show them off on the nite. Really looking foward to it!! Loopy
  6. oh yeah i forgot to mention that we had a newish plant that we didn't realise is only a semi aquatic plant, fully submerged in the tank. it had started rotting but you couldn't tell by just looking at it. Our LFS had told us that they have one of these plants in their tank and it is just fine. i can't remember what the name of the plant is. so perhapes that was a contributer to the scungy tank problem. loopy
  7. Well i decided to do a do a gentle vacuum of the gravel in the tank and scooped out as much of the "scum" as i could. Then i did a water change and the tank looks a lot better. hopefully it will behave its self. will do another water change in a few days. Also i think i thought of the wrong word when trying to describe the stuff in the tank. I said "scum" but that usually implies crud that sits on the top of the water but this stuff was attaches to plants and the filter and heater and well everything as well as creating a film on the top of the water. Yes the siamese had just blown a bubble nest (his 1st one!!! waaa!! and i ruined it. it was for his own good though.) but from the pictures i have seen of bubble nests there is not supposed to be this crud. I thought it was rather entertaining watching one of the female siamese trying to staunch up to the end of the vacuum cleaner. Thank you for your advice loopy
  8. One of our tanks is a 50L roughly 2x1x1ft tank with a sponge filter, lots of cabomba and a few other plants, drift wood and 1 male siamese and 2 females, 2 bronze corydoras and 2 whiptails. I am getting concerned though cause all through the tank is greyish white fluffy scum. I am wondering if this is a bacterial bloom. If it is, How do i treat it? If it is not, Then what could it be? And what does a bacterial bloom look like? can someone please help me, i do not want it to get too bad that it will start killing my fish. The tank has been running fine for ages but all of a sudden (or so it seems) it has this fluffy stuff everywhere and especially on the surface of the water and round the plants. pH and nitrate levels are fine. Any ideas?? Thanks Loopy
  9. Hi, my partner and i would love to come and met other fish fans. i have only just signed up here but have been lurking for a few weeks. we have 7 tanks running at the moment of various sorts and are working on getting a 6ft tank running too. We don't make any real effort to breed any fish but have had a couple of "accidents". I hope you don't mind complete strangers turning up. We will bring pictures of all our tanks and would appreciate advice from others as we are always looking at new ways to make fish keeping easier and more successful. Thanks Loopy
