  1. Before i had a brownish algae , this is now almost if not completely gone now i have a green algae. Not too much yet,but its on some parts of the wood. its not furry, its slimy and its on some leaves too. and some of the ornaments hiing places surface in the tank. The algae has tiny ,really tiny airbubbles UNDER the ayer of algae, sometimes the fish brush past it and it come sout ut its under the algae what is this? do i have too much light? light too long?
  2. Hi all, i am looking at putting a metal halide light on my 8 foot 1200 litre tank. to plant it. there are two bulbs. How far should i have the ligt from the water? o does it not matter? is it more important to have the path from the light to the water unobstructed or the light source closer? WARREN: this is your fixture - can yu tell me how you set it up? thanks
  3. fair enough but in theory, having that wet dry sump set up gives better filtration though right?
  4. 404 and 405s suck dirty water from the bottom tray first and it comes out of the top tray clean. so you should have filterool at the bottom tray - so bio media gets only clear water
  5. ok, might sound strange but i am used to canisters. in a canister, the bio media gets 100% exposure from the water flow every single time the water turns over. but in a sump, you cannot 100% evenly distribute the trickle of the water fromt he top of the tower - usually thefilter wool down to the bio media. i have made my trickle uniform as possible, but how does this work? i have seen sumps where the bio media isnt entirely splashed all the time.
  6. yeah, so hard to resist but fed them alot less today lol
  7. i have a new sump set up. i have used old established filter media, but they were just immersed in a make shift tank previously, and had an fx5 running in it as well noww i removed the fx5, only the sump is there, turn over isnt hte problem, the bo media is obviusly not used to doing the entire filtration. AMMONIA IS 0, completely nil. but nitrite is between the first colour and 0. very slightly. i put a lil salt to detoxify it and prime also. is there anything i can do wiht out costing money to quickly establish the bio media to quickly get it to digest nitrite too? i know tht bacteria that eat up nitrite is the secondary bacteria.... first comes the amonia eating ones first right? never had nitrite problems before, usually my canisters take care of it all, but this is also the first time i have had to use a sump.
  8. the nylon scrubbers and stuff like that sounds the part im looking for and the bird netting i can source that no problems just wanted suggestions from peple id like to use pummice, where can i get masses amounts of pummice?
  9. LFS have aqua 1s and eheim bio media they are good any cheaper alternative? my sump tower is HUGE and can contain masses amounts of media, if i was to fill it with this stuff it would cost hundreds if not close to a thousand bux! Can i use something that is cheaper and readily available? i have highly carnivorous fish also as a note - arowanas Pummice? scoria? i am looking for big amounts of media
  10. wow that stuff is potent, i feel light headed:D kidding! no, its completely fixed on to the joints now, wow its strong! but ill wait a day and rinse it and soak it in water a little bit to get rid of any possble residue
  11. ok yeah fair enough i used marleys pvc glue and ill use tha tin the future seems that a few people here have used that that wasalso recommended by hollywood
  12. http://www.aqualine.co.nz/cement.html i called them and asked of all their PVC cement products and they said "we are advising you that it is toxic and may and can harm your fish. Do notuse our products or anything thats not sewage or spouting" .... solicone it is lol
  13. might sound strange can someone give me a picture of a pottle they used im really paranoid on this one cos i dont trust hardware store people lol or a name? or a description?
  14. i see ok cool then no problems i wil get that pvc glue. its all pre-assembled now, ready to go up. ill go get the glue then:D
  15. yeah, the guy said i shouldnt they dont know if it emits residue because its used for sewage pipes and not drinking water. they said that for drinking water - they dont use any glues
  16. i am setting up a sump for my RTG tank. i am using as an outlet from the return pump in to the tank, pvc pipes and pvc bends. now, the friction and the amount of hold it has should be enough to hold it up hanging by the side of the tank, but i am unsure of this, to make sure should use adhesive? should i use silicone to bond the bends and links together? and make sure its leak free? or should i use super glue?
  17. damn i totally under estimated them! i have never seen that monster eat anything moving.
  18. lol come on mark i have never seen the ornate eat anything live! it just sits there. and i was so sure that this fish would have been ok! it was so fast.
  19. went for a second look nothing onthe ground, behind anything, on top of lids. but noticed something weird....... the ornate has a conspicuous bump on its belly there was onlya few sining carnivore pellets around....................... ...... wow, that fish was a fastand agile swimmer...................damnit! it was the last HFF had too! ok, i give up on giving the aro some tnak mates like that lol and maybe ill move the ornate in case he starts to like the loaches
  20. no no holes to jump out of. the hole is very small for food drops even then, looked around, nothing. but it is the most and only logical thing left:S lol
  21. have a 3.5 inch pink tail chalceus. in with a 6 inch asian aro and the pink tail disappeared, been there 3 days, starting to eat, then came home tonight - nothing! lol its gone i checked the sump, filter pipes to the sump.... undid it all and looked, not at the over flow.... i looked under the hiding places and plants.....not there! the arowanas belly certainly had nothing in it it was hungry and i even fed it a piece of prawn. and this fish was way too long and big for it to eat..... BUT if it did, its belly would have been really really big.... where could it have gone:S hope it turns up tommorow:S
  22. ithought there was an easy way but thats ok i just take the scraps and poo from the plant bases, i never dig in around the plants. i swirl my syphon n circles and thisbrings them up. but takes longer, its ok
  23. man im new to planted tanks im finding that with normal non planted tanks - i just syphone the gravel wiht out a care in the world. but with planted, i have to take ages making sure plants dont get uprooted. and wha ti find is that pieces of food that usually gets picked up by the filter and flies with the current, gets stuck in the plants and under them. is there any easier way to clean the gravel or is this just something you have to deal with?
  24. there is a confirmed breeder on the forum. varoniphile, i think he has them for sure, sold some too and went pretty quickly. cool thing bout them is that they dont need UV
