    Tonic salt

Iodine is added to table salt to help prevent goitre (thyroid) problems. There isn't enough natural iodine in New Zealander's diets. As far as I know, it has nothing to do with keeping the salt flowing freely Cheers Jude

  6. All I do for my water is add a chlorine remover, I don't think anything else is necessary. We used petone aquifer water for our first tank for a while but only because we were trying to clean up a cloudiness problem. The cloudiness cleared up but it would probably have done so anyway, and it was a lot of work. Lovely water for drinking though Cheers Jude
  7. I'm not sure male bettas are capable of feeling lonely, they are too busy admiring themselves. Put a mirror in there with him so he can display at the 'intruder' and he'll be totally happy. Smaller, more zippy fish might nip at his fins. Cheers Jude

  10. We used to catch little eels when we were kids and they could really jump. We also caught a huge 6 footer and my uncle chopped its head off. I didn't know eels were like chooks - chop the head off and they keep going. This damn thing wriggled all over the back lawn. I screamed, took off inside, and had nightmares that night about headless eels .............. LOL Oh dear, I must be feeling old - getting into reminiscence mode. At least my stories are still short.   Jude
  11. Uh Oh - you're in trouble with MTS already - join the club    And welcome. Great to see you here. Have you considered joining the Kapi Mana club? Its great and you'd get heaps of knowledge and help from them Cheers Jude
  12. Did you have polystyrene under it? I've never had a tank crack but I've heard the slightest uneveness, even a grain of sand, can cause it to break if there's no poly. Cheers Jude
  13. Hi and welcome Tracey Cheers Jude
  14. I'd put them in something else and keep changing the water. I'd remove any rotting or dead leaves and then keep an eye on them to see if they recover or not. Not all cold water plants like tropical tanks either so if you do plant them you should watch them too. Cheers Jude

    Fish dead help

What do you have in your tank? Is there some wood or an ornament leaching something?
  18. You go first
  19. I don't know what fish you have but I just use tap water and dechlorinator. I've never aged it as well because the dechlorinator does the same thing. I also usually use cold water for 20% or less water changes because it doesn't drop the temperature enough to bother the fish. Cheers Jude

  21. I don't think mine do. I've seen a few nibbled leaves but there's heaps of fish in the tank which might be the culprits. Its never been much damage. Cheers jude
