cats, anyone else love them this much...
livebearer_breeder replied to David R's topic in The Off Topic Fishroom
Yes of course, that makes perfect sense. Because extra money would not help endangered species programs and re planting of natives as well as further control and trapping of undesirables etc etc etc. -

Do you struggle with the english language? or are you just a bit foolish? Read between the lines if they are not already clear enough for you. -

A bunch of you have said that though? e.g samH, which is a colourful comparison to ignorance, or is it arrogance? displayed by those cat owners who seem to be under the impression that their cat brings them EVERYTHING they catch and are just little darlings. My cats with bells bring in and torture (never for food) 2-3 birds a week and 3-4 skinks a day! Until today i had an entire terrarium devoted to saving the little buggers and releasing them again. I keep them both inside but i have 3 other flatmates who don't really care, so its incredibly hard to police their activities and it makes me feel incredibly guilty when its a native species and if your a kiwi it should make you feel the same way. Yes we've done a lot of damage to this place, so why not, now, with the right understanding, make progressive steps towards righting the wrongs? I hate to think about all the amazing things we never got to see here. and im not going to pretend like its all cats faults! but cats really are out of control. Registration and microchips are a must, and frankly it would be better if more were euthanised instead of adopted. -

I disagree, cats are far less responsive in terms of active control as dogs and dogs are very rarely able to catch lizards or birds and are heavily regulated and controlled if any kind of comparison is made. Im kind of astounded that someone can say "my cats only ever caught a couple etc etc..". Are you home all day everyday? do you make sure your cat doesn't ever leave the house? even during day time? or do you let it do its own thing when your at work? do you supervise your cat when he's outside or do you attach a webcam to your kitty in order to assure and maintain the accuracy of these low numbers? Often feeding the cat well just translates to more torture for the bird or lizard. Its not just about the birds, possums are a pest just like cats and doc does a lot of work through the bush eradicating them and planting natives already. What we are looking at is a problem, that statistically needs far more drastic action than possum eradication. http://www.nhc.net.nz/index/lizards-new-zealand/lizards.htm -
I've had entirely different experiences, its grows VERY well when its struggling to see the light, low tech is the way to go with mosses i reckon, Don't put them near the light, they will just grow algae, i always tend to put them in the darker corners of fishtank and they thrive!

petone's animalz have older LR

Maybe give up on the glosso and try dwarf sag? easy growing, spreads quick, low growing, good contrast of lime green against the dark green java
-
the white cloud tank is VERY low tech. One bulb, no filter. Done

I dont really do much tbh. But i don't grow my plants in tanks any taller than 30cm. I put a layer of peat moss in the gravel bed and then just let the fish poo away! I have DIY co2, the yeast version and my lighting is just 6500k CFL bulbs from bunnings $4ea.

Well we are over a week and a bit on and have made some changes: White cloud tank is over run with ramshorns but just keeps getting better Leopard tank is chocka, Removed over 40 Dwarf sag from the front and found some magic crypts growing underneath, have no idea where they came from. Moved the Xmas moss tree to the front left corner, still a lot of plant to move and trim before ill get what i want. Use the moss as an extra way to diffuse the co2, it rises and gets caught in the mass. Let me know what you think!

My new Guppies - What colour are they?

Just an orange tux with the pink mutation i think but it was an import at one stage, same with the black. This is a poor photo of one of my young Red head strain boy, supposed to be a strong red vs the orange tux above, but im not so sure, curious to see the difference. -
He will know the deal then it is just VERY important to get it right the first time! Spent the first 3 years of building installing them with a company that was extreme about perfection, luckily 6 years in i have boys to do it for me (with the same complaints i made) especially about the level of pedanticness that seem to be required when installing but entirely necessary. The biggest issue is, once the walls are on, unless you want a huge job on your hands, its a lot harder to fix at that stage! and if you do it right then - like my fishroom - the light saver bulbs were enough to heat it. 28c top rack 26 middle 22 bottom. Cant tell you how much money i saved, going from 7 tanks in the house to 40 in the fishroom!

Culturing foods is incredibly easy and soooo worth while! I'm currently culturing - white worms, black worms, microworms and wingless fruit flys I say start with whiteworms! Needs: Container (plastic with lid) Soil ( i buy standard unfertilised soil and then lay it out in an oven tray and heat it for a while to kill other bugs) White worm starter (usually around $10 if purchased from a member) Small piece of glass Old bread Method: Add soil to container - i find they do better in slightly moist conditions Add worms to soil Soak bread in water Place in center of soil Place glass ontop I use bread that i put fish flake and spirilina powder on as anything you feed them they will be gut loaded with and will transfer to the fish but you can use luncheon and things like that too. The white worms will collect under and around the bread and the bread sticks to the glass piece. So when you life the glass the bread lifts and then you have clumps of worms with little soil available to be fed straight to your fish. When you start feeding live food best to get a live food feeder cone to help teach the fish first, last thing you want id to waste your livefood into a gravel bed. hope this helps

how much experience do you have with batts and aqualine? few important things - When using batts DO NOT STUFF into your frames!! measure and cut EXACTLY to size like a jigsaw puzzle, then staple the tops with staple hammer or staple gun, otherwise you may as well not even batt, they have a tendency to slip and also become pretty useless at insulating if the edges are pinched or stuffed, basically your trying to maintain density of the batts material without changing it after you've cut it out of the bail. It needs to fit evenly and perfectly, take all care, try not to pinch or fold when installing and take your time! sweating and batts = a bad time. don't bother with trying to make a poly batts hybrid, it wont give you the effect your looking for. Make sure your ceiling batts are the thicker ceiling batts as this is where most of your heat loss will come from. Having a window isnt a problem, but definatly rig some poly up to fit in and out as desired or if you have light sensitive eggs incubating. If you have a large amount of water in your fishroom, opening the door or window for an hour while your in their will barely (if any) effect the temps of your tanks as water holds heat well when in a room like that and will be a far more pleasant experience for you. When installing aqualine make sure not to break the surface skin to badly when screwing and if you do and its not paintable, smudge some silicone in or any bathroom sealant in that spot (these areas have potential to track humidity, get damp and moldy and then turn gib soft and rubbishy), i also used silicone/bathroom sealant in all my sheet joins before i painted, this included the ceiling, but i used finishing's on the ceiling as well. I did an undercoat and then two coats of paint on top before i was happy. Keep your off cuts because if you have a disaster and get water damage to the base, you can just cut the bottom out and replace it, i ended up replacing a strip across the bottom about 500ml high with treated ply instead of gib again so that i didn't need to replace it anymore if it got wet. Also consider the over head lights you may perhaps install, the fitting need to be covered somehow, as they will also track humidity and get rusty and then explode on you one day! it took 3 years, but it did happen! and man did i change my undies after :slfg: hope this is helpful in some way?

What age before you can tell a Platy is male or female?
livebearer_breeder replied to NoFishing's topic in Livebearers
Sexual development has HEAPS to do with the line the fish has come from. Have had platys and swords that have been one gender their entire lives, grown huge, never produced fry then suddenly turn male. but at 2 months old generally (especially if in large numbers) the gender should fix and be obvious. Livebearers have the ability to be very diverse fish! -
Thanks guys :happy1: The first tank at this point is mostly just a grouping of plants, will be doing some trimming and removing, their is a bondi style Christmas moss tree hiding behind some of that, that i would like to move forward and make more of a feature for the tank. In the WCMM i keep trimming the moss down to encourage it to cover rather than grow up, i kind of feel bad for them because the drift wood itself takes up at least a 3rd of the tank which means only around 40l but they seem to love it and have been doing well (have been thinking about adding co2), every 3 months or so i sell about 50 wcmm out of that tank and let the youngins just keep rolling over, its a really neat little system. The biggest issue is that the tank still has dragonfly larvae popping out and they like to chow down on small wcmm when they are still in aquatic bug mode.

I have a few golds, the colour is far more striking than the regular ones, only difference i can tell so far, no significant size disparities
