  1. Apparently you should paint the back and sides of your tanks black so they dont run into the glass and break their beaks
  2. I like seeing all your "update" threads and new or developing aquariums so i thought i'd share a couple photos of my own, (only have a cellphone to work with unfortunately) :sage: : This is a 90l forest style leopard fish aquarium, over 100 fish in their atm - This is my 60l low tech tannin rich WCMM setup, no filter, you can see various ages of fry some still looking like neons, just breeding over nicely - Get a lot of enjoyment from making and continuing to work on mini environments, have a couple 20l and 30l tanks that's scapes are a work in progress but so far so good. Living central town means a bunch of smaller tanks, although they require more care it can be really rewarding. Let me know what you think, more to come!
  3. My experience is the opposite and im sorry but 500mls of water in LFS qaulity water is cruel, more times than not, they look miserable or ill. In fact they seem most happy in community tanks with plenty of plants and appropriate fish mates. When i used to breed these fish regularly, i would not separate them, i kept them all together once they were big enough to move from the spawning tank, into a large heavily planted tank and would only remove the occasional larger male or female or the prettiest boys to let their fins grow without interruption. Keep them like this and you find they lose ALOT of the supposed "aggression" towards each other that justify's these practices. This style of breeding is about efficiency and money making. I understand the "raised this way so doesn't know any better" argument, but we know betta and people manipulated this species this way. So why not give it a chance at a better life than the miniature iso cubes you sentence them to?
  4. 24watt Compact fluros 6500k, NOT warm white. from bunnings $4ea, about $5 a month to run, $10 for clip on fitting.
  5. Just like animals, some humans deserve to be culled. Have no issues with the death penalty, definatly deters some.
  6. Cheers man, 100% solution? Also do i leave it in some boiling water after or something so not to kill the fish?
  7. So a couple days ago i refilled my DIY co2 bottles and have noticed that in a couple tanks the diffuser just wont work anymore? this happen to anyone else? all the rest are fine, but the others the pressure builds up so much that they just pop off instead of diffuse.
  8. Yes have seen quite a few now, There is ALOT of limestone and driftwood in their so plenty of places i can not see.
  9. Just grabbed a hand full of mud from the farms dam in marton back from christmas with me and have started a black worm culture, pretty excited.
  10. Wish i had a decent camera, but also the tank is low light on purpose. The iridescent blue that outlines their bodies has just got stronger as they've grown. Pretty small compared to africans i've kept previously but i really like these guys, they are so full of character. Was about two months ago that i started feeding white worms regularly, i swear to you, white worms are the key to making fish randy!
  11. Been away for four days over christmas, come home to my Julidochromis marlieri tank and have a couple little guys around a cm buzzing through the limestone, perfect little versions of their parents, adorable. I knew they were spawning but never witnessed any fry till now, really happy. Had to share with someone as my friends and family just wouldn't understand but i've wanted these fish ever since i walked into Chris downs fishroom when i was 13 years old, a decade down the track and my persistence has finally yielded at least some small cute rewards. Bad photos from my phone but - Adult Little fellah These fish originally came from tom, who has since moved to auckland. Thanks so much tom!
  12. As sentient beings who have created this species don't we have a responsibility to them?
  13. its not fair to treat them as wild fish and use that excuse to justify means.
  14. Betta splendens which you see in the stores aren't found in nature. They are a domesticated breed of fish from Thailand.
  15. I guess my biggest issue with it is that i believe home aqauria deserve an environment and that includes access to fresh or flowing water, those guppy traps are just no good for that. No problem with it for emergency's or for a day or two but i really feel like its quite cruel to keep an animal like that.
  16. Just because of some previous comments elsewhere i would like to get peoples views on this particular subject. Do you think keeping bettas in guppy traps is cruel?
