  1. Ok got the official ID, Oligosoma smithi or Shore skink can some one please edit the Title??? supposedly Mcannes skinks are South island only damn incorrect ID books. I have found about 10  LIES  in this one might make good kindling
  2. yeah for a uni project, might take it up as a hobby though, really fun in a weird way. normally I'd card point it, but then it wouldn't look as cool pinned next to the Giant Clickbug I caught earlier in the year. would love to do that fruju, but have to display as per international guidelines.
  3. if it say's "I'm your best friend", then bites you on the face, I know who he belongs to and he doesn't want him back
  4. wow, so much better than NZ plants. and submersed grown too....
  5. they didn't seem to mind me picking them up too much, felt really bad that they spent the night in my pitfall traps though.
  6. if anyone has ever had a go at correctly pinning and displaying bugs they will know how proud i feel about this little fella, I had to as I have a Giant click beetle to put him next to. (it is either a dwarf click beetle, or a juvenile click beetle, both are found in the area and I don't have the ID books.... YET) btw thats a size 000 pin through the thorax, entire bug is less than 6mm long
  7. Found a few McCanns skinks (not 100% positive on ID yet, getting it confirmed) during a bug trapping mission recently. got a few nice pics before releasing them.
  8. common enough, just gotta notice them. only cool thing really is their hunting technique. http://youtu.be/FbVDYSiH-Vw
  9. im not saying that they don't come in to moult, im saying that they spend quite a bit of time on shore other than then. not just moulting and breeding time.
  10. nope, still learning... just surprises me how much stuff that is "common knowledge" is actually wrong.
  11. correct, one of the original tanks was completely made out of Yarn made from plastic collected out of the ocean. it is also part of community based projects for the disabled. and if the end result is someone going out and getting a real tank, then  in my mind.
  12. well done, they are one of those fish that choose when they want to breed ime, I tried everything for a while, then sold my group, 2 months later a couple of babies came back to me.
  13. lol a customer told one of the girls at Carine that the brightly coloured patches on the female convict were from the babies eating her and that was the flesh underneath the scales :rolfl:
  14. correct me if im wrong but doesn't the chemical make up of the fishes body system determine what temperature it can survive in?, so technically the climatization thing is more about what extremes it can survive in for short terms but in the long term you would be doing considerable damage.
  15. i've been playing with Tuatua tounge, free source as im close to beach I know that puffer fish LOVE it and so do africans. dunno about long term, and im only using the tounge in case of paralytic poisoning affecting fish as well (don't expect it to be too bad as there ain't any stoned snapper around, better safe than sorry) imo for fish, go aquatic or insect (can't see many fish taking on a cow). lotsa crickets and bugs in the long grass around here as well (plus I know they not spraying it). always easy to get maggots or earthworms.
  16. Skunk loaches, best food:- adult Festae cichlids....
  17. here you go lotsa info http://www.penguins.co.nz/
  18. You seriously must try the Zodiac loaches, they are my favorites by far, kinda like aqua meercats. and smaller growing I also have a funny feeling that they would breed in an aquarium, the ones I had at work used to do breeding behaviour all the time, never had the time or equipment to have a go though.
  19. me thinks you be wrong, me catch those on monday night and go out once a week to catch them during most of the year.
  20. I thought reverse to display was the standard for algae scrubbers.
  21. no such thing as a stupid post, unless LA and Ira comment on it.....
  22. I've had Dwarf chains and Betta's together before, the odd nip but nothing major, Skunk loaches on the other hand.....
  23. the can of worms has been opened.... again.....=P mainly cuz its illegal to import them, and if there wasn't enough stock or experience to breed them before the law was put into place then they don't show up. there are the few oddities though. imo if you want something different there is a whole range of very interesting and stunning NZ natives.
  24. lol, yeah will do. it tough being a student. the point is to get a real job. problem is payday is the day after my day free of the missus. didn't know until today
