  1. cool cool cool :nilly: now the easy bit is over.......
  2. there is always an exception to every rule, would be interesting though to find out where and go have another look and see if there is an anomolous population
  3. personally if he is showing signs of recovery I would hold back on the furan 2, best to not stress the sytem unless required. get him a pile of live food to keep his strength up. and keep up the clean water. imo Furan 2 is the Last resort. still can't believe someone would do that so such a beautiful fish.
  4. lol yeah, they will focus on this when they still havent worked out who does what in their own working, theres people with 20 years fisheries experince feilding calls about cattle on roads
  5. too late written and waiting, plus it was written to promote Native fish keeping, as far as im aware there are no aussie gobies over here although I knew a few people keeping the big sleepers in Townsville the giant bully that far upstream is interesting, do you know if they wrote it up in the research they were doing?
  6. the little sand gobies rock, tough as guts and friendly as. still one of my fav fish
  7. I would point the finger at fungal infection due to the state of his fins as well, your choice of Meth Blue or Pimafix for a treatment option, if he's large enough consider topical application of meth blue directly to the tufts.
  8. thats what it looks like under sunlight, it was a good angle to get it but yeah no trickery or additional lighting.(the first comments about him was "wow I love the blue")
  9. if im correct the Sunsun brand is physically identical to the Aqua One Nautilus range for spare parts. I think the part for the 2400 is the part for the Nautilus 2700
  10. pics of my new boy, collected by dangling upside down off a bridge to get to him as the river was surrounded by blackberry and I had 10 mins till I had to pic up the missus. I have named him Spike (due to the state of my legs after this mission)
  11. I had a similar Idea I never actually attempted (although it is still in the pipeline) the timing of the pumping would be that hard part and would possibly require some custom curcuitry to get an even tidal flow. My idea also incorporated a third tank as a refugium/sump to increase the water volume etc... so the water pumped from one tank through the refugium and out into the third. each tank would also require a filtration system in the deeper end. I also worked out that the tanks would need to be a minimum of 600mm high (preferably 800 or more) to get any major benefits of doing the tidal flow. (tidal flows affect more than just the surface of the sand, there needs to be a fair amount of subsurface drainage to allow the natural ecology to occur, my tests (sound very scientific doesn't it, involved a bit of digging at different tides and seeing how long it took to get much seepage) in the mudflats off Matua showed the average drainage needs to be around 150 -200mm deep, add that to how much you want it covered by at "high tide" and how much you want left at "low tide" and you see the issue.
  12. cheers. I have ended up with 2 tanks now, one for the juvie redfins and one big display tank that currently has one medium sized redfin and his girlfriend.(and I might steal one of my breeeding tanks soon too). I am throughly in love with them all  not too aggressive, pretty and they are beginning to show off, i'm currently working of weaning the tank onto pellet food and he seems to be helping the kokopu to learn.
  13. not many loaches have been bred in the aquarium with any sort of regularity (except using hormones andother extras) I have seen other loaches breed before in tanks, but no one seems to know what triggers them as of yet
  14. I'd go butterfly fish, and build a stand that is knee high, so you get a good top down veiw as well
  15. ask your LFS they turn up on the lists regularly enough
  16. still treating the symptoms and not the cause. check your tap water as well, some areas have high phosphates in their tap water
  17. humming = something vibrating when it shouldn't the one I had was rescued out of a shed and was given to my boss when they were first imported, it had run for a few years then had been "stored". still silent even though the impeller shaft is almost worn out. check that the impeller seating thingies (the rubber end caps for the impeller) are in correctly, also remove the o-ring and put it back in carefully, if it rolls slightly it can cause the top to vibrate slightly try fitting a screwdriver inside the impeller assembly while its together and see if the impeller shaft has any freeplay. put a bit of stress on the impeller cover and see if there is any small cracks in it, these are not visible until you very carefully bend it. filling the hollow spaces is akin to using algae fix to cure algae problems.... treating the symptoms not the cause
  18. go get some Banded rush from your local pond plant shop (or wild, just dont be to greedy or destructive), cut it back and plant it. it is slow growing so you'l get about 3-5 months of it looking good before you need to cut it back. was thinking you could get your hair algae growing on your wood, then add a pile of dirty gravel and some flocculant which will settle all the dust down onto the algae and bind it together so it stays put on it.
  19. have you checked your impellers, if they are slipping (you need to twist them to check) that could be the cause. 2 x sun sun = lots more media capacity what about building a sump filter until you can afford the FX5 (or better) not that hard if you are even a little bit handy.

    Daphnia?

i've had several bags couriered from Gisbourne before without a problem. main issue though in winter is providing enough food to keep them going until summer. easier to do other live foods atm
  21. pretty much whatever species you like the look of for that tank, for breeding you may have to drop the pH slightly (<7.0 for most common species) you should be able to keep the Keyhole with them. as to where, keep an eye out on here for breedings, I'm sure i saw someone from hawkes bay breeding them a while ago. my fav's are Macmasteri and Trifasciata, although the cockatoos are nice if you can get a good specimen
  22. petrol generator = expensive and annoying, plus you have to be there to turn it on (expensive to make an auto starter) Solar = only works during day DeepCycle battery = expensive and still need to switch it over unless you want an expensive spill over circuit installed. UPS= great idea, only beeps when power is off, pluss you can rip out the beeper if its really that bad
