  1. wow I can use a pretty flowers to get my missus to let me have a new tank Genius!!!!!!
  2. I would try for a minimum of 1800LPH, but if you want decent stocking go for 3-5000LPH maybe more depending on fish types. remember that LPH isn't he be all and end all as you also want the water to have a reasonable contact time with the media, so 2 x lowerflow canisters will out preform a higher flow canister. btw if just for a grow out tank why not do a pile of sponge filters????, by far cheaper as a short term option
  3. plus easy to get parts for aqua one filters
  4. the Aquis 1250 has 1400LPH and uses 28W Fluval 306 does 1150LPH 15W Eheim 2217 1000LPH 20W Eheim 2075 proffesional 1250LPH 16W
  5. 32W is a rather high amount of power for only 1250LPH, i wonder if there is a typo here

  8. It looks like an apartment or hotel, i'd sooooooo buy one of those apartments for the view
  9. used to find them alive and wriggling in wood that had been dried for a couple of days at the fishfarm, also once sold a piece of wood to a shop and ot a phone call thanking us for the 20 young bristlenose but next time could we bag them in water.
  10. why don't you use the lucky bamboo as a mini aquaponics filter??
  11. lol, there are many closed top versions as well, if memory serves me correctly Fluval used to do one. heres one from the 1970's
  12. wow, external box filter, haven't heard them mentioned for a long time, i guess because they have evolved more into the canister filter/HOB filter. Actually found half of one in the work garage the other day (still can't find the rest of it) modern take on one though.
  13. sheepsnana borrowed one of my older books, can't remember the title, but its one of the best I've found, the older ones (circa 1960's) are great as they tell you how to DIY most things, one of them I had had a comment to the effect that commercial tanks are untrustworthy and you should make your own, then went into how to make a steel framed tank using rubberized window putty. also little gems like using weaving cane as cheap airstones, how to use a small tube to remove hard to get at fish waste, blowing your own glass pippettes etc...
  14. I don't have an issue with this and think the balanced way is a valid and successful method of fishkeeping, what I'm trying to point out though is that it is not a new Idea even though it seems to be pushed as one. I'm surprised that got taken as being an issue the way it was worded... oh well.
  15. unless you actually see white spots forming I would steer away from preventative measures as clown loaches can be a bit weak agains some medications due to their lack of scales
  16. thats about as good a method as you can get for them, have done them on larger scael by putting 50 into a 1500L tub with about 100L of javamoss and a bucket of infusoria, just start picking the young ones out for sale as you need them.
  17. I somehow turned a hobby into a proffesion (don't ask how) As I was planning on doing marine biology but found I can't dive due to asthma. there are a few biologists studying fish behaviour over in Townsville at the James Cook University. I personally don't think fishkeeping has changed that much, just a lotn better marketing and a lot quickler access to resources via the internet, but in general most fishkeeping ideas are decades old and just being refined (I have read a book claiming a heavily planted tank using a homemade pressurised canister filter that thrived with one waterchange every 3-6 months, the book was from the 1950's) much of the research is done by the manufacturers of the products, all research needs to be funded by someone and the manufacturers are pretty much the only source of funding, also a lot of stuff is home made innovation. and now im off to buy a chocolate fish
  18. Rep claims that due to pressure from retailers they are going to change their pricing structure to fix the problem sometime before the end of October, won't be holding my breath too much though
  19. hehehe, back in the days of battlenet for Diablo/diablo 2 (before the bots took over) Quake, (yes the original) Warcraft 2 & 3, and some MMORPG that I can't remember the name of..... man that makes me sound old....
  20. I have heard the wholesalers may be changing their policies soon to prevent this. I also know of a particular shop selling tanks that has a seperate account for every region in NZ and just rings the wholesalers with the orders taking advantage of their free delivery service so they don't have to waste shelf space.
  21. lol, had to wander round for a bit just to see something post 1980's
