Try turning the intake off when the power is off and see if it still leaks. I put little amounts of Vaseline at all the connections to make sure it doesn't leak, and haven't had any problems. Also when I turn the power off I turn both the intake and out flow switch things off, and havn't noticed any leaking on mine.

Looks/sounds like a cool thing to do, looking forward to seeing it go ahead, what would you be stockign it with?

Reduce the feeding, the main reason you get an outbreak is that there is over feeding/food left over for snails. And from the looks in the picture it looks like you have Malaysian trumpet snail that are harder for the fish to eat then other snails.
