  1. oxygen will be depleted by normal nitrifying activity after the first few cm of media wont it?
  2. or you could just drink it over ice ( or in a coffee like Caryl said)
  3. Looks good now, but as others have said I too think a different substrate could look better. How about something about this colour from a local river
  4. odd as they, in all likelihood, could never breed in the morphed state
  5. Infusoria and green water are what you need for feeding long term. Temp wise 20 odd deg should be fine as there is a good population in a lake near here that gets into the low 20 every summer. I wouldn't return to the wild (and it is illegal to do so) because of disease risks. I the wild they can be found from slow/medium rivers with a sand and silt substrate (even small pebbles) through to lakes with very little flow.
  6. KrazyGeoff, you have a nice collection there.
  7. Were you planning to run this on a system or only for incoming water from the tap? I read it as on the system. I have a DSB in my 4ft coldwater native tank, sometimes it seems to remove nitrates well, other times it seems to stop dead and the nitrate levels start to climb again. at the moment I'm not testing for nitrates but are just doing weekly or so W/Cs. A while a go I had an issue with an ammonia spike and after the biofilter was working again the nitrate peeked at 20 - 30ppm and then over the next week dropped back to <5ppm so it can work well. There are a lot of arguments against a DSB on the net ie sulphates but I haven't had a problem with mine. I know that a DSB is slightly different than a purpose built reactor but the processes will be the same.
  8. I agree with sheepsnana (although I have never been bitten by one ), and it will probably be Eriophora pustulosa the garden orb web spider.
  9. Nope the little ones aren't planaria, I know what they are, and there are several in the samples that I collected. The would be just under 2x the size of microworms I was going to breed the worms up for the natives (and the others, WCMM and now c. sterbai). The WCMM went mad for the little white ones when I put them in their tank.
  10. The sunday was good, sorry I didn't meet you sheepsnana, and the sterbai cory I picked up are sooo cute. So much for having non heated tanks only
  11. Yep a spider x mantis :digH: It's a dragonfly larvae
  12. I'll admit that the fitting in mine is very tight as well, maybe we shouldn't by cheep fittings and fixtures

    Worm IDs

These are wild collected worms from a small farm pond (small pond and small farm) and I was wondering if anyone could ID any of them Album at http://picasaweb.google.com/113298704761943818357/Fish# so you can zoom in Small white worms about 3 or 4 mm Long brown/red worms about 30-50mm by ~1mm, seem to poke out of substrate a lot and don't move/wave very much but there is some movement very thin brown-ish worms about 15mm? long and maybe .25mm wide, move alot when out of the substrate (behind the small white worms, hard to see) Also caught were lots of free swimming mayfly, damselfly larvae and a few dragonfly larvae
  14. http://forums.waterwolves.com/lofiversion/index.php/t132993.html Looks like someone else couldn't ID one like that one. M. notopthalmus/notophthalmus (sp)?
  15. Your use of english was fine, it's the language that is broken. Try and get anyone that is new to NZ, especially if english is a second language, to understand this: "I'll just pop down to the shops and grab a chook for the bring a plate that's coming up." Edited to keep Ira happy
  16. I think mine would get upset if I had them in several households
  17. I have a SWMBO that snorts and snuffles at 3am :digH: , does that count?
  18. when you first posted about the mudflat I wondered if you would try and do a tidal one, would probably need a bigger tank than what you are using though, a very interesting idea
  19. or zev could fix the resize script :digH:
  20. Good few days by the look of things. That is a fantastic sized banded and the little one is so cute :nfs:
  21. I guess I'd have to go over and give the objector a piece of my mind...
  22. Haven't reg'd but I might come over for sunday, or staurday night for a cold-one if no one objects
  23. They are a lot fatter than my giants, although mine are putting on weight/girth
