  1. Not to sure with you fish but thought it was interesting to share one of my stories.... Had a male who I bred about 6 times he was a great fish and bred in a community tank 260L. About 8months after owning him he decided he didn't want to breed anymore and ate about 150 eggs and died shortly after it was a sad day and I have no idea why/what made him eat so many eggs in one go... Sometimes its just random
  2. I have a black orchid crown tail pair. They are a pretty nice fish! There are a couple on chch with them who are having trouble getting them to build nests so would be interesting to see if they can get them to breed again
  3. got some cool colours going on!
  4. Splitting can be quite difficult though but yea definitely agree if you can do this. I remember I brought this 90cm tank of TM I cleaned and cut for AGES but not matter how much I tried I couldn't split it.... :gigl:
  5. It's pretty easy to do it yourself if your handy ? You will need some special silicone that can be used in tanks (about $15) a silicone gun (about $5-$35) a set of super thin blades (not the craft knife style you can get thinner better ones that are similar to the old school shaving razors about $10). From there its CAREFULLY using the blade to cut away the silicone (although I don't recommend it for first timers you can use turps to remove excess but it needs a few washes and dry outs before it safe for fish use). From there you can lightly apply a bead of silicone all around the tank(less is more seriously you can always add more but removing is messy) and use either a Popsicle stick or your finger to press it down. If you aren't confident with silicone (and who is haha) you can invest in a roll of painters masking tape to use down the edges to get the perfect line. also forgot to say you need a rag or paper towels for clean up Its a fiddly job an usually takes a few hours to do it... but its easy if you take your time, put on some music and do it in the sun/shade
  6. gas heaters are cheap, easily obtainable(even 2nd hand), can be moved around and last a while when used right.Just a thought for those who are currently using electric heaters. I don't think you really have any sort of question on your hands to be honest. Having a wetback system VS a heat pump its pretty obvious what is cheaper... The only advantage to using a heat pump in your situation is that you have the lazy and easy technology thing going. You can set it to turn on before you get up and before you get home and its the click of a button to have a somewhat instant heat source. As opposed to setting and lighting a fire and maintaining it through out the night. Another thing to consider would be having showers while the fire is running to really take advantage of the wetback...
  7. Thanks everyone, you have given me loads of ideas
  8. Heading to Auckland for Easter tomorrow. Wanting to know cool sights and must sees places? Also what petshops are good an what locations are they in? I want to get a super nice halfmoon this weekend to take back to chch with me
  9. I miss my killifish stupid earthquakes
  10. lol that was pretty funny. A better response would have been, you can have your laptop back when when you have a permanent job as it sounds like that was the real issue. Personally I think its somewhat the parents responsibility to "help" the kid get a job. Its not as easy as you think, I applied for heaps of jobs and never even got a call back. If it wasn't for my brother helping me get a job I doubt I would have got one before i was 17 Getting your first job and learning how hard it is to earn your own money really turns people around
  11. Unit 1, 38 Dakota Cresent is the correct address :gigl:
  12. I would put your choice to this how stupid are you with technology? If you can happily send emails, download content, send content Bluetooth, WiFi, maps an use all the features an apps then go with the s2. If you can't or are unwilling to learn doing all of that go with the I phone because it will be much much simpler for you to get your head around. Personally I wouldn't spend 500+ on a phone. Sure its a nifty piece of technology but REALLY do you need that? You'd be much better off with a cheaper phone(that can do 90% of the same things) + a laptop to do MUCH more than the phone ever will.
  13. brought my 240L tank for 90$ 120cm X 45 x45 with lids. Yours looks pretty nice so I'd be pushing for around 150-200 but might not sell right away brought my 120cm double bulb light for 45$ an 2x NEW (at petshop) uv bulbs for 20$ each Filter would be worth around 100-150$ if in good condition an not needing any seals chemicals an cleaning equipment are worthless as are the fish stones an air pump setup Only my opinion but I would think around 350-400 would be a reasonable price from a buyers point of view Just going on what I've brought in the past not on retail worth. One thing to remember is money spent has nothing to do with the second hand value. for example... You can buy a crappy thrashed car for 2000 or a nicely maintained car with 5000 of receipts for 3000. Just because you spent 5000 keeping the car in good condition doesn't by any means make it worth 5000 more. If that makes sense also my guess is tank is 100cm x 45 x40 around the 200L mark
  14. heres how I made mine, pics pretty much say it all. Don't know where you live but go into your local shower manufacturing shop e.g bathroom direct and ask if they would spare you a couple bits of off cut plastic sheet. Its food grade plastic and doesn't harm the fish. The netting I got from a plant shop also chemical free and doesn't harm the fish. I was selling these for 15$ at one point, but I no longer work at bathroom direct so can't really make them now-although I have a few bits of plastic here if you are in chch-I dont have a pic of it completely finished haha just needed to trim the edges and they looks alot nicer. although if you wana do it real cheap an easy just cut one peice of plastic an staple netting over it alot easier an cheaper because you don't need to buy 15$ a tube silicone to do it
  15. I've always wanted one!!! If anyone needs to rehome one in Christchurch or for some reason comes across one that they can spare also videos of feeding please!
  16. frogs are poisen and will likely kill your aros. dont do it unless your stupid
  17. I personally never clean my filters, I unclog the intakes every so often an thats about it. water changes generally consist of 20L removed (240L tank) an then topped up to the top which generally is about 20-40L . I sometimes don't change my water for 3weeks an never have any problems. Over cleaning can be a bad thing so simply vacuum up the crap thats visible an top up the water. You also might be confusing your terms of clogged filters. If its enough to move water it doesn't need cleaning. If its coming out in bursts it blocked an needs unblocking not cleaning. all filters will have reduced flow when in good running order. others have pretty much covered this but don't be to concerned with cleaning a tank
  18. My fish roam in a big tank with multiple pairs of fish, only the best an strongest fish survive. I found separating the babies from the parents only stressed the fish an resulted in undesirable behavior. I have yet to sell any babies from my kribensis as I want to see how the grow out an what colours they have as mine are all brother an sister its sorta abit of a gamble putting them out for sale... just my useless 2c lol
  19. I think the ppl who did this mail drop should be arrested for fear mongering  completely guess here but oct 21 give or take a week. dont ask why just wait an see
