  1. That seems very unusual. I would make sure there's no chlorine in the water you are putting in? also wouldn't hurt to add an internal filter something like a eheim 2012 would be good.. an might help abit with the build up of ammonia... You might not "need" it but its always good to have more filtration. Also cut back the feeding amounts
  2. I would agree with that statement haha, very aggressive but also very gentle in a way. They are already breeding. I have about 40ish fry an its my first successful batch so far but I've yet to see how they will grow out A 40x45x45cm block of space should be enough for a pair I think. I can put two plastic netting dividers in so they have full water flow in each block but still a barrier that stops any fighting from happening.... Or I can just keep it the way it is ,Rocky an densely planted and add more rocks and try form better territories and more cover ffrom the fighting? I'm asking if there any noticeable benefit to letting there be a natural selection style competition in the tank.. or just cut them all off from one another completely an focus on letting them breed...
  3. Ok so currently I have 3 pairs of Pelvicachromis taeniatus an 2 unpaired females. They have been a big group since young (from Ryanjury) they are in a 260L 4footer. I have made 3 spots but it seems the middle ground is unused an 1 pair is looking very unhappy. I am wondering what effect it would have if I put 2x tank dividers(custom made by me with chemical free meshing) on the 2 breeding pairs side an leaving the middle as a new zone? My real question is do you think its better to keep a healthy competition going an leave all dividers out? Or is it best to make use of the space I have an try make it work with 3 pairs? I will be adding more rocks to make the spaces bigger asap (it already has alot of rocks) but I don't think this will work because they just seem to want to fight an defend a territory an the middle ground is just nomans land where they all interact im running a planted tank with an internal an external filter
  4. dont do anything until you take it to the vet, probably an ear infection or something similar (my cat has had something similar) my cat was a stray an has fiv an he has lived a very healthy life minus losing a few teeth in fights just so you know its not a huge deal but im told when they get old they will deteriorate quickly
  5. peacocks are quite good at breeding an very popular but require at least 2 females per male an a biggish tank 200L minimum. Dwarf cichlids are probably a good bet to.. they stay small and can be kept in 2foot tanks easily... its not as easy to breed them an you will also need a fry raising tank.Another factor to consider is fish health... fish sometimes die randomly for unknown reasons (water parameter changes or bullying for example) theres no point breeding a fish every couple week as it won't necessarily work out as well as you think an your more than likely to have losses at some point. so lets say you have 2 tanks running at around 70L each, its probably gona cost you around 35-50$ at least a month so you'd have to have a pair that is producing fish solidly an a stable fry raising tank as well as demand for the fish. more often then not, people don't want to buy baby fish... an you have to wait a couple months for them to get to a reasonable size before anyone will pay for them... but you might sell them for abit more... so your going to need to sell around 50$ of fish a month to even break even an then theres the time an effort you put in to the tanks an the selling... you might find its just cheaper to work 5hours in the weekends to make money than to breed any fish but... you might be able to get some of the costs back on your food an power bills...
  6. haha thats very funny and cool! When I had mine I would see them push their noses out of water about 1cm sometimes ...Always wondered why obviously love to climb things

    Algae

hmmm this is getting abit off topic but ive found turning off my diy co2 an putting in excel instead has made my plants go alot alot better, I was also getting a thick white coating on the surface of my tank which has not gone since stopping diy co2?(yeast leakage I assume but I can't see how this has happened)
  8. when I brought plants off trademe they came in newspaper with a little bit of air in them an water on bottom double bagged. only downside was the ink on the newpaper rubbed off onto the plants
  9. aww poor fish, I think fish shops need to stop selling fish that are bigger than 20cm, either that or they need to come with a 10page information pack on how to care for them at the least. .. its the same with those catfish people buy when they are really cute then after a year they are 25cm in a 90cm tank... its irresponsible for both the buyer an the seller...

    Algae

have a search around on these forums or wait for someone more clued up to give better advice.... should be easy enough to get rid of but being in a window with natural light will be difficult to keep on top of

    Algae

You need to post some details of your tank, what lighting does it have an what plants/fish are in it? The main cause for algae is usually just an imbalance with the way your tank is running firsty you should have your light on a timer, 6-8hours id also say you need to add some more plants to the tank as well if you can be bothered you could add some DIY co2 an ferts (very easy to do) I used to have outbreaks all the time an it was basically related to having the tank near a window an not having a good balance with the plants an ferts theres heaps of info on the forum about this if you do a search also dont use algae removal products not only are they dangerous but they are unnecessary
  12. frogs are never full keep tank nice n warm, make sure your water is filtered as well... if your tank is getting really cold at times then it could be trying to hibernate... got any photos of your tank an a rough breakdown of the conditions/enviroment? frogs are quite easy to take care of, if you dont have any then buy some mealworms as they are a never ending supply of food an provide a good amount of nutrients for a growing frog
  13. hmmmm i also had this trouble time an time again she would pop randomly before boxing up, so oneday when she was about to pop I put her in a guppy trap, BIG MISTAKE she freaked out while I was away an then still birthed about 40 babies then died :tears: it was very sad an disappointing. my advice if you "care" for this fish when shes preg split her off into a small heavily planted tank... thats your best bet BUT this is of course IMO... I will say I had this guppy for about 8months before I decided to put her in a trap, she had offspring in the past but only 2-3 survived per batch an the last few I had were eaten by kribensis an then the last last few were in a tank lost by the earth quake
  14. fluval 405 external goes really well but ive never had any issues with running internals anyway TBH I barely notice the difference an i run my 260l on internal an external. my advice get some decent media for your external you wont regret it also buyer beware if you buy any external on TM its probably to good to be true... I found out the hard way when I brought a good running order filter that really wasnt
  15. you should get a daylight bulb, a filter that moves the water(but not to the point of a windy day situation) abit of extra substrate for the roots seems to help. also you could look into DIY co2 (very easy, simply need a bottle, air line, sugar an yeast) an you could add ferts once everything is setup an running for a while Jennifer has amazing setups so hopefully she will see this an put in some info for you my plants were going terribly until I added co2 an ferts now they are managing to grow even with the cichlids constantly eating them :an!gry the under gravel nova ball ferts are really good if you dont mind paying abit coin for them
  16. cool setup!! I've been planning my setup of awuaponics for a while not sure which way im gona go I don't like goldfish and am hoping I can get some trout or salmon to use in mine... you got any tips for me?
  17. looks awesome! well done add in some wood i reckon gives it that natural look
  18. this video of killifish is awesome !
  19. I read that eels were declining in numbers on doc website so probably wont use them, having gold fish would obviously defy the point of aquaponics.... I was thinking salmon or trout (if caught young) would possibly be do-able...
  20. Does anyone have any other ideas for cold freshwater fish suitable for aquaponics?

    Bugger!

I can imagine how depressing it is dude! I lost 3 fish in the quake an that was pretty gutting.can't imagine losing that many fish raised from fry would be heartbreaking YES YES YES :happy1: to the dwarf tank, It sounds like a mint idea! have it awesomely planted with DIY co2 & ferts... would be pretty amazing in a tank of that size! :nilly: I tried to do something similar but my peacocks are plant DESTROYERS :an!gry
