I've heard that its now illegal to take skinks from the wild(I used to have them when I was very young) Was wondering if anyone knew anymore about this? My brother seems to think you can apply for a license through doc? Does anyone know more about this? I tried the website but it didn't give me much information other than the lizards habitat an where to find them ect ect

lights should be on less than 6hours for a start I would suggest a bigger filter(if you can) an real plants or perhaps even add the old filter back in? give tank a good clean take all ornaments an rocks fake/real plants out mess up the place an let it set for say 20mins.gravel vacuum until substrate is clean an no debris is left possibly repeat if needed, drain to 50% an refill. From here turn lights on only for viewing or under 6hours a day MAX. I don't know how much you feed but it might pay to cut back alot. fish can only eat a pinch or 2 in a meal. So its much much better to under feed them an then under feed again in a couple hours. so very minimal amounts an feed them slowly. dont just chuck a bunch in an leave them to it, hand feed them sorta thing watch the fish eat an when you know they have had a couple good mouthfuls stop an come back a couple hours later an repeat. Not only will this cut back waste but its also good for your precious fish! If you are getting alot of uneaten food it could be worth getting some bottom dwelling bristlenose or corys Water changes need to be done weekly. A tank that size DOES need to be changed weekly id say about 40% a week should be good.plants would be a good idea an probably save you money on the time wasted cleaning up constantly.Get some low light plants (ask for advice at petshop), chances are someone on here will give you some cuttings if you advertise. I have a 4foot tank heavily planted with a t8 dual plant bulbs an I only leave my lights on 6hours.So cut back that lighting asap

worst suggestion ever, but I saw a documentary of wild cichlids which showed mouth brooding fish pickup eggs of another fish an raise them up in there mouth :slfg: failing that, I would suggest trying an egg tumbler if your not already using one

just curious to where/what the money is spent on?

some nice looking tanks there  . I use Iron sand from greymouth beach, been there twice an have about 40kgs of it. always rinsed it before use and never had any issues or fish losses with it and my ph sits the same as when I used the white silica sand (chch well water) Don't see why it would be bad for fish unless the beach was contaminated? should be almost neutral because its from the beach? I think you'll find ph shock would be the cause of any related deaths from substrate, e.g taking it from a ph of 6 to a ph of unsettled 7

blood worms an flake should be ok, maybe some other live food if you have it. keep a close eye on them. BEWARE they can jump a good 5-10cm an you will need a lid or net covering the tank AT ALL TIMES(trust me ALL TIMES) if you don't know what cycling is then best google fish tank cycling its very important in a new tank, also make sure the water going into tank isn't chlorinated.plants help keep a balance in water quality stress coat will help with new fish

hey everyone sad news our cat has been missing for 24hours :'(, he has missed 2 meals which is seriously unheard of for this cat, he loves his food.we rescued him from a stray life an was very under feed when we got him, he weighs about 8-9kg now an is often referred to as the "seal cat" his name is TOM, he may come to a high pitched toooooommm toooooommmmyyy or even monster. He is a tabby cat very staunch an has a big belly. he is very very missed an we are hoping he will come back to us safe but this is very out of character for him so things aren't looking good. if you see him or know anything about his where abouts please don't hesitate to call/txt me on 02102795337 or 9604005 (my name is Sam) pics of him Cheers Sam

needs pics :smln: I think apistos over rams anyday much nicer fish an not to aggressive from what ive seen. If I didn't have Pelvicachromis taeniatus I would totally want them! I also like rainbow fish an cherry barbs. Neons are cool but from my friends past experiences they tend to not be as hardy as one would hope &c:ry definitely plant the tank out an get it real green, with some bottom dwellers an some top dwellers would be amazing .Be warned once you find your absolute favorite fish you will just want to breed them an you will probably end up selling off the others to do so... well at least thats what happened to me haha -
David my once high opinion of you has diminished, because you are defending something that is so blatantly wrong. I mean cmon LOOK at those pictures there's no way all those fish are alive today. You speculate on the water quality an the fact that know one actually knows...blah blah, but the same can be said for fish quality, how do you know all of those fish weren't brought from healthy tanks 2hours before the photo was taken? How do you know that any of them are still alive or how massive the losses are? I do how ever agree with your statements about normal behavior, your never going to be able to give them a natural environment but I still don't think its any reason to stop trying altogether...
-
if you kept a medium sized dog in a 3m x 3m fenced area for its entire life but it was healthy an well feed does that make it ok? no it doesn't. those tanks in the first couple post make me sick, its definitely cruel no matter how good the tank bio is.its not natural an its plain disgusting.just because you CAN do something doesn't mean you should I don't eat battery chickens or pigs for this reason an only buy freerange meat, although admitidly I have eaten my far share of fastfoods  IMO fish keeping is about replicating the outdoor environments as best as you can for your fish not only for there health an breeding but for the sakes that your gona rob the wild stock which is often depleted as it is for your own selfish desires. If your not doing that then whats the point in owning them in the first place?
