You would be surprised at how much an 8 year old can understand if you read an adult book (like Stella's) together. Her book ought to have all the information you need to produce something at a young child's level.
Personally I am not a fan of adding chemicals and prefer lots of daily water changes if water conditions are not good. If you mean something like Prime though I guess it can't hurt.
If it is HITH you need to treat it with the correct medication too.

I have found some secondary fungal infections, when gently rubbed, fall off and you find a nicely healed scar, or new scale, underneath with no treatment necessary.

We had fresh cod for tea thanks to my sister in law and a successful fishing trip. We grilled it with lemon pepper.
