  1. Could there have been some sort of spray on the kumera? Perhaps it has too high a sugar or starch content and they had a diabetic attack :dunno: Blanching is usually required for a tough green like cabbage as it breaks down the cellulose or something so it is digestible. Not a requirement with courgettes.
  2. It doesn't use that much Ira. It takes us 3 - 4 days to get through a bag.
  3. We like fires but not the hassle of bringing in wood and sourcing it etc. We tried gas, but it is too expensive here, and our room does not suit a heatpump so last winter we installed a pellet fire. Really pleased with it so far but only used it for half a winter. We hooked it up to the old gas fire thermostat so it cycles on and off all by itself. Only ran it in the lowest setting as the rooms got too hot. I think our next step, after replacing all the windows with double glazing, will be to install a ceiling thing to suck the heat up and around to the various room.

I think it will have to be put down. Gareth and Dena would take it but it would be terrified of the dogs and their other cats

You could take him Antwan do you think?
  6. I too would use the wood fire with the heatpump as booster if required.

I am in ChCh for my aunt's funeral. We don't know what to do with her cat. It is just full grown but so scared of everything it won't come near (didn't come near anyone much when aunt was still alive either). It came from Cat Rescue but they won't take it, nor will the SPCA. :dunno:

My daughter and her family did a similar thing at a place just out of Christchurch. They loved it! The Microbes beat us at quiz again but we came second and only had half our team so can't complain.
  9. When I had a cold marine I didn't have much light on it and the red anemones were fine.
  10. Wear trousers if your legs are that upsetting It is not something I have ever noticed in lower tanks. Are the tanks in a high traffic area? What fish and is the tank well planted? They might just be skittish in their surroundings, rather than your legs having anything to do with it.
  11. Do you mean sea lettuce? I used to collect this for my local marine and it looked great and the fish and other inhabitants loved it.
  12. How do you know what they put on the shop tanks in her area Joe? Don't assume
  13. Fish are like humans, you get good and bad attitudes. Some kribs are fine and peaceful but sometimes you will get one or two that are really nasty. They get very territorial when breeding and you will know when they have started as they wil have all the other fish huddling at one end of the tank!
  14. Why don't you make a basic list of what they do have available, then we can offer further advise from there. Offering suggestions and then finding they are not available could take a looong time

I have been playing around with ideas for an Alice in Wonderland themed dinner. The Queen of Hearts she made some tarts... These were photographed before the knave knicked 'em
  16. Red ears can live 30 years. You can leave the ramp there. Any fish bigger than the fry will eat them. The idea is to have lots of fine leaved plants in which the fry can hide. Water sprite, Java moss, ambulia and cabomba are all ideal. It will need to be cleaned thoroughly I suspect but no need to leave it running for weeks before adding fish.
  17. Note Caper is in Canada Joe Get livebearers if you want fry or egg layers if not.
  18. If you break your chocolate first all the calories fall out so you can eat as much as you want. You should also store your chocolate on top of the fridge as calories are afraid of heights and leap out. Plus, only the first calories count, you can only handle so many in 1 day, so if you eat all your chocolate in one day it doesn't count Knowing these simple facts leads to a guilt free, yummy Easter

I have just returned from my walk up the hills. Met the neighbours at the walkway at the end of our street. The 4 yr old looked astounded and asked "How did you get up here by yourself!!" Grant claims he is going to clean out the garage some more. Personally I think it is like shifting the deckchairs on the Titanic but we will see. He was going to do it at Christmas but a major flare-up of his RA prevented him doing anything.
  20. If you are female you can have problems if you eat too many Easter buns though
  21. Note Caper there is nothing wrong with your ornaments, just that many (Joe included) consider them unsuitable for aquariums and prefer a "natural" look
  22. I thought you had rusty pipes or something. On a worrying note... The element is a required trace mineral for all known living organisms. In larger amounts, and apparently with far greater activity by inhalation, manganese can cause a poisoning syndrome in mammals, with neurological damage which is sometimes irreversible. According to results from a 2010 study, higher levels of exposure to manganese in drinking water are associated with increased intellectual impairment and reduced intelligence quotients in school-age children. What easement do they refer to? Is this town supply or a well?
  23. Don't worry about it Caper. Only do a water change if the ammonia rises more than it has been. You are doing fine so far.
