  1. My favourite fish!!! I don't have a tank big enough for them though
  2. This is for designing a breeding certificate Anthony, not for actually breeding any fish
  3. Any more entries? You have until the end of the week :bounce:
  4. People please! The language being used recently is unacceptable for a family friendly forum (even if it is sometimes children using it). Joe, you could have said "Sorry for the poor quality photos" and Godly3vil could have replied "Poor quality? Rubbish!" There is no need for the casual use of profanity that is creeping into posts.
  5. Back to your original question :gigl: hoplos get on with other bottom dwellers. Mine are in with corys and Ancistrus. There was a lady breeding them in Dunedin many years ago and she said a drop in water level, and water temp, would trigger them spawning.
  6. I had a rock pool marine set up for a couple of years and it was a great little tank. It had a HOB filter but no skimmer or anything else. I had a problem with heat though as it got too hot over summer months so I definitely recommend a chiller. Wouldn't go smaller than the 3ft either I don't think. I had anemones, chitons, rockfish, triplefins, hermit crab, sea cucumber, shrimps and, for a while, a baby octopus.
  7. A change in pH from 7 - 7.6 is a huge swing and, as zev said, would have caused the gasping. Remember is is a logarithmic scale

    Hi from CHCH

Plenty of ChCh people in here if you have questions or problems with your new purchase too

    The What's Up? thread.

We have building consents in at the local council for our garage extension. We had planned to build it (with fire wall) on the back boundary as there is only a council reserve behind us so we did not think we would have a problem. Council has just informed our builder that they want $900 to ask themselves if they will give us permission to build on the boundary so we have told then we have changed our mind and will move the back wall forward 700mm so consent is not required.
  10. Mine used to feed at the bottom but now come and eat at the surface with the other fish before heading back down to snuffle up the plec pellets. Did you realise they are bubble nesters? A very interesting fish to breed.
  11. I hate to think what you plan to do with some jam! :slfg:

    The What's Up? thread.

It is a hive of activity at my place today. The heat pump man is drilling through the computer room wall. The Solartube men have drilled through the ceiling and the double glazing guys have removed the big lounge window ready to fit the new replacement doors. Hopefully. All were done except this one as they got the angle measurements wrong last time and we have had 2 weeks of draughts while they built another set.
  13. I don't think you are the only one thinking that! :gigl:
  14. I have a lot here too but wrong island
  15. In the rules... Prospecting: No posts are to be made with the intention of forming a bulk purchase or import by invitation to meet a minimum order quantity. The FNZAS Fishroom or website is not to be used in any way for any individual or business to prospect customers or form a buying group. This is also extended to other websites using this site to contact our members with the intention of prospecting new members.
  16. Hard to tell from the pic but the lump on the side could be carp pox. That is untreatable (I think) but harmless. Looks unsightly though and is contagious. A bit like warts on humans.
  17. Very hard to tell at this point Caper but I would not think neon tetra disease from one pale spot. Besides, I don't think guppies get it. If it had some sort of pale spot when you got it there may be internal bacteria or infection behind the death.
  18. I thought that was what the balls were :dunno:
  19. You only need to clean the filter once the return water flow has started to drop. I imagine the filter wool clogs quickly though as goldfish are so messy. A fluffy spot is often a fungus that has grown on top of a small wound. Stringy white poo can be a sign of bacterial infection Not sure what the little white tubes could be though!
  20. Hi and welcome. You have realised the original tank was too small for goldfish. They are big waste producers too - like the apple snails. Mixing meds and tonics is not a good idea either as some can react with others. Goldfish do not need company to be happy. Ignore your heart What sort of filtration do you have? Here are my questions now: 1) I cleaned out all the gravel and ornaments and "disinfected" it with formalin - then rinsed it a few times and mixed in Prime, Stress Zyme and Stress Coat with the gravel to put the good bacteria back to fight whatever caused the ilnesses - was this the right thing to do - or what else could I have done? I don't want the feisty one getting sick. Are you sure the fish had finrot and not ammonia poisoning or other problems due to the poor water quality? Best thing to do in these cases is to improve the water quality. Did you ever test it for ammonia, nitrite or nitrates? This would have helped with a proper diagnosis. Forget adding products and do more water changes. 2) How long to wait before placing him in the new tank (much bigger at 54 l) with two other fish? When will I know it is okay to transfer him - what else can I do to make sure he is disease free? 54L is not big enough for 3 goldfish to grow. All you can do is get the water quality fixed then keep an eye on the fish for any sign of further trouble. I found this on a goldfish specialist site... Stocking level - what are the SURFACE dimensions (length x width) of your tank? As a guide, in a coldwater aquarium, you should allow: 60 square cm for each 1 cm of fish body length excluding the tail or 24 square inches for each 1 inch of fish body length excluding the tail. For example, in a 60 x 30 cm tank you can keep a total of 30 cm (12 inches) of combined fish body length, such as three 10 cm-long fishes, or two 15 cm-long fishes. There is no way round this! If you overstock, you will always be up against problems; remember, too, that small goldfish grow, so you need some spare capacity for growth of your existing stock. Do your sums, and, if you are overstocked, find temporary accommodation for your surplus fish until you either get a second or a larger tank. Lessons learnt: Apple snails are extraordinary creatures BUT not in a 21 l tank - leaves about 1 l of waste a week They are great little poo machines aren't they? :slfg: Water that is crystal clear is not necessarily healthy water This is so true and inversely, cloudy water is not necessarily unhealthy either
  21. There was an is813 selling them on TradeMe late 2011 and early 2012
  22. Do remember, when travelling, that your car heater will most likely be running so the interior will not be that cold (unless you have an old car or the heater isn't working). Make sure they pack the fish lightly and don't put too many in each bag. Bag should have 1/4 water to 3/4 air, or oxygen preferably. You could just put the bags in a cardboard box then pack scrunched up newspaper around them. Make sure the bags stay upright so they aren't falling over or rolling about.
  23. One of my wanted destinations! I too saw the guinea pigs and immediately thought "lunch?" :slfg:
