  1. They aren't - well, Grant has never objected and has always offered to rub them dry - but they limit your arm length when reaching to the back of the tank.
  2. Females need to take the size of their boobs into account too! To reach full arm length you have to dangle other bits in the water if, like me, you are voluptuous (my son says 'fat').

I assume different things are added to make styrofoam as opposed to polystyrene. I recently toured a polystyrene factory (the raw product is really interesting) where they make containers for fish (dead ones ready for supermarkets etc), wine bottles and insulated wallboard etc. It was very interesting and I made a point of asking if it would release toxins if used in an aquarium. The tour guide said not. Tests had been run on it for toxicity and all sorts of other stuff. Whether they did any tests with aquariums in mind is another matter mind you! I know of a number of people who use it attached to spawning mops and others who use it as a background and have yet to hear of it causing problems in a tank. Nothing wrong with a bit of caution though and John1 has a valid point about us not being industrial chemists.
  4. Hi there and welcome. I too agree with everything the others have said - particularly the depth is a pain to work with, for the reasons mentioned, and I too would be concerned about the weight factor.
  5. Tropical Blues is owned by fishroom member Fee. Send her a PM or email [email protected]
  6. Welcome to the fishroom Justin. Have you researched the requirements needed by seahorses? They are not for beginners. Very hard to feed as they need live food - lots and lots and lots of very small live food.

It wasn't the gravel Goldie - although it didn't help seeing as it was gravel meant for African set-ups so the pH kept hitting 8.0. I can kill guppies no matter what the pH!
  8. Congratulations Damon. I hope you are going to register them with the breeding scheme Those cockatoos are a great looking fish.

  14. Neither did Marlborough but I think it was sent to an old address and not Napier's fault. Not only did we change secretary but the new secretary then moved house! We don't need more info though I don't think as Bruce emailed us the basics. If there is any other stuff being sent, please send it to me, 8a Faulkland Dr. Blenheim

    BACKGROUNDS

Welcome Steve and thanks for the praise. Rob's idea of painting polystyrene and putting it behind the tank is a good one. One of our members used a thick sheet of polystyrene which she hollowed out caves and niches using a hot wire. She then siliconed gravel to it (a slow, laborious process) and put it inside the tank. It looked fantastic! A lot of work though and the finished sheet was very heavy. Do you have any photos of your stand?
  17. Well, you learn something every day! I have never ever looked at my daphnia and thought "Gee they look like darleks"! I will now though ... he he Exterminate! Exterminate!

    I'm back....

Newcastle...hmmm...is this the Aussie Newcastle mentioned in the old song "Don't you ever let a chance go by"? A funny song about fellas in their FJ Holdens (or some sort of Holdens) cruisin' the main street of Newcastle on a Friday night looking for sheilas and getting into trouble in general.

I have seen them priced from $11.95 to 15.95 and I thought the latter was dear enough!

$30 for bristlenoses!!!!!!!!!! Were they gold plated? I have a goldmine in my tank as I have 7 or so babies here. I might bring them to the auction if they are big enough by then. I don't think they travel well when they are very small.

As we have the toughest importation regs in the world I would say our importers have even more restrictions than yours. The small market doesn't help either.

Welcome back Joey. You can't be too addicted if rugby league was considered more important! Can't comment on the Warriors as I don't follow rugby, or rugby league - or whatever it is they play. Where are the Knights based?

  25. Hi Bowhunter and welcome to the other side of the world. You don't have to put a subject heading if you don't want to but when you have typed your post you must submit it before clicking back to another forum or topic or it gets lost (as you found out).
