    Java Fern

You would think Javacus fernicus would be simpler eh?

    Java Fern

Warren's tank can be seen here in the album called Warren's Tank http://uk.photos.yahoo.com/carylnz Not very good photos unfortunately as it was early morning and the sun was shining brightly. BTW Pegasus, my original java question had nothing to do with the java I now have for sale. It was given to me recently and yes, I still have a bit left. Will I send it to you wrapped in lots of bubblewrap?

    Java Fern

And another thread drifts off topic  Get off my java fern you tank stocking debaters! As for stocking levels - if it works for you, whether heavy or light, then good.
  4. Hi and welcom to the NZ Fishroom. I am sure you will find a lot of fellow cory lovers here. I like the pandas myself.
  5. Good point Rob. No Dutch auctions please Bruce!!
  6. Depending on available seats, we could pick up others if required. We often do this Ira when heading for conference or exec meetings. Sometimes, when we don't want to take a vehicle on the ferry, we ask someone in Wgtn to pick us up and provide further transport. It is all part of fish keepers helping fellow fish keepers. We also have great fishy conversations on the way and learn lots! If it snows on the way are you willing to shovel?
  7. Marlborough had a pot luck lunch today and decided the fish display and auction would be worth a club trip. We could stay a night or 2 and visit the aquarium as many would like to see it after having heard us talk about it and show the photos from conference. If we have a spare seat we could pick you up on the way through Ira and drop you off on the way home. Members are already thinking about what they could contribute to the auction.

    silver vieja

TFH July '96 mentions them too. They used to be Cichlasoma argentea. Can't say I have ever heard of them in NZ though.
  9. Marlborough could probably send some stuff - plants certainly. Freight across the ditch has gone up though. We have a pot luck lunch tomorrow so I will ask members then.

    Winter

Esmay has just read that and wants to know if you are blond as well? Her fish are fine. They have all survived. Nitrites and nitrates etc seem to be fine (negligible) so hubby is looking after her fish while she is up here staying with me. 8)
  11. I see you are online at the moment Derek. Paula is here with me (she's from the USA) and she has a discus tank running at 30 degrees. What plants, if any, will tolerate this temperature or should she lower it?
  12. I have often seen peppered cats (they are a corydoras) available in Christchurch Bigfish.

    Winter

Is that possible? Since I don't know you personally please take that as the joke it was meant to be. I bet a lot of us have done even more stupid things. Just call it a Senior Moment.
  14. Leopardfish are beautiful in a cold tank. People breed rosy barbs in outdoor ponds over summer then bring them inside for the winter months.
  15. The Waikato Aquarium Club goes on annual molly hunts but I can't remember where they go :-? Anyone here been on one of their hunts and can tell us the location?

    sticking rocks

As well as making sure the rocks are very clean and non porous, as Fee suggested, it also helps to make sure there is a reasonable amount of contact area between the two rocks. If You are trying to join very thin areas (sharp points and edges), it does not work so good.

    DIY CO2

Thanks for the link Derek. I am sure those who thought CO2 was too expensive to try will now give this inexpensive method a go.
  18. You obviously have a VERY green thumb David. Your tanks are beautiful!

    Siamese tiger

If he whacked them against a rock to kill them first then they weren't live food were they?

    Kelly Killies

Kelly Rennell (former FNZAS treasurer) has moved from Napier to retire in Invercargill. He has this site where you can go and see photos of his new house, scenic shots, and a number of photos of killifish, most taken at NZKA Shows. http://photos.yahoo.com/bc/kellyr_nz Kelly is very into digital photography and there are some really good killi pics here. If they inspire you to try killies, contact Andrew Broome (his details are in other killiposts here).

    Winter

It can cause problems if you forget to turn off the heaterstat before lowering the water level too!

    Winter

What did you do? Accidentally disconnect it in your haste to go do donuts in your 8" of snow? How come there isn't a smiley to indicate humourous sarcasm with a little yellow face poking its tongue out? I told Esmay you thought it was funny and she laughed too. She also said it had not snowed where she lives for 42 years so expecting equipment to cope with it was asking a bit much. She was doing water changes every 4 hours I believe so was looking forward to a sleep this afternoon since the power was back on. Here's hoping you are right and the spike is small. Keep your fingers crossed.

    Winter

I have warned her about that Rob. How long after the power comes back on will the spike occur (like hours, days or a week)? She is due to leave on holiday (coming to stay with me actually) on Friday with our American club member Paula. So far all the fish seem perfectly happy and luckily her tanks are under stocked. She didn't feed them while the power was out and was doing regular small water changes throughout. There are two tanks. Both have undergravels and one has an internal Shark filter and the other one runs a Fluval 304 external.

    hi there

Hi there Rene. Good to have another member from the Top of the South
  25. Just because you got the rocks and wood from a pet store doesn't mean it will automatically be 'all right". When we first set up years ago we too got all our stuff from the pet shop. Lovely dark red looking gravel. Set up tank with guppies. pH kept rising to 7.8 no matter what we did. Tried adding pH Down and other products but it went right back up again. Turns out the gravel was meant to be used by those wanting to breed Africans and it was supposed to raise the damn pH. I have never trusted a pet shop since! The majority are out to sell as much as they can get. Our local shop keeps selling chlorine remover to customers, but our water doesn't have chlorine in it! Ordinary sea shells (had mussels lately?) will raise the pH.
