  1. So many fish - so few tanks! I agree with Bruce. Visit your local pet shop and give us an idea of which fish appeal to you.

    virus's

Worldwide equal opportunities. Ain't the Net wonderful?
  3. We have to make a point of finding each other Ira. Having met so many in this forum I love the chance to meet in person.
  4. Hi Nervous! I do believe I have seen you in the Community Tank. We are not as gregarious as that lot (nor do we have so many punsters  ) but we will certainly do our best to help with any questions you have. Welcome to The Fishroom.
  5. We have even further to travel than you but have to leave later as the only ferry we could get onto was the Lynx which gets into Wgtn around lunchtime. Obviously you are happy heading off by yourself and will have plenty of time to find your way if you get lost. Mind you, there aren't that many roads to choose from are there? See you there!

    virus's

Yes. We rarely used to get spam but now get about 6 a week (still not much by many standards). Dukes Casino keeps trying to get Grant to gamble his money (little do they know he hasn't got any ) away, the Nigerians keep trying to tell us they will share their millions if we would just tell them our bank account number, and lots of Asian companies want to sell us fish (many not legal here - never mind the fact that we can't order them anyway) and aquatic products. Oh yes, I forgot about Mrs Sese-Seko, widow of the late Zaire president Mobutu Sese-Seko. It seems her husband managed to deposit billions of dollars in a Swiss bank account before he died and she is offering big remuneration to anyone stupid enough to assist her in recovering the cash.

    virus's

Can viruses actually be spread through this forum (ie through PMs) or only if the infected computer sends an email to a fishroom member? It is a concern when things like this happen but I thought everybody should have up to date anti-virus software these days plus anyone with Xtra has theirs checked as well. Our anti virus updates automatically whenever a new update is created. We get a number of messages sent to us with the virus already removed by Xtra. As extra precaution we also have a firewall. Don't know whether this helps in the virus department as that's Grant's area of expertise, not mine, and he is out at the moment. If anyone knows it is their computer which is infected, but doesn't know how to fix it, give me a call, I may be able to help (well, Grant may be able to).
  8. You cannot import fish into NZ from ANYWHERE without it going through quarantine, even Aussie.
  9. Your fish may have had worms (then again it may have just been poo hanging out - it can be different colours depending on what the fish has eaten) but there may also be other problems as well. What size is the tank? What filtration are you running? How many fish are in the tank? If the fish are gasping at the surface this indicates a lack of oxygen. Have you done any water tests? What are the pH, nitrites, nitrates and ammonia levels? The answers to these questions will enable us to help you more accurately. BTW - welcome to the fishroom
  10. It is certainly a great magazine. I have 6 years worth of them in my bookshelf. Haven't bought any for about 12 months though - our magazine bill was getting a little over the top and something had to go *sob*
  11. Works for me now. Must have been a temporary problem. What beautiful tanks! I did not know there was a reef club in Auckland. Wonder if they would like to affiliate to the FNZAS? A job for an executive member to follow up on. They could offer some invaluable help as I am always hearing marine keepers saying there is little in NZ in the way of assistance in this area.
  12. When I click on the link David I just get a blank page! Unless it is a view of a reef tank in a snow storm  it is not working for me. I will try it again later as obviously Boban nz could see it.
  13. If you don't like the price, don't buy the fish! Simple.
  14. I am sorry your first post to this forum should be such a negative one. I was unaware the 'hobby is stuffed' as you put it. I am sure that, like many shops, this one has assistants who give good advice, and ones who do not. Did you ask to speak to the manager so you could pass on your concerns? One bit of bad advice does not a poor shop make.
  15. I assure you any above comments between me and Bill were all in fun. If you can find those plane tickets we will happily chat away together all the way to Oz.
  16. No idea I'm sorry. Is it the only hoplo you have? Are any others the same? Any other fish affected? Is it otherwise feeding and behaving normally?
  17. They aren't - well, Grant has never objected and has always offered to rub them dry - but they limit your arm length when reaching to the back of the tank.
  18. Females need to take the size of their boobs into account too! To reach full arm length you have to dangle other bits in the water if, like me, you are voluptuous (my son says 'fat').

    tank background

I assume different things are added to make styrofoam as opposed to polystyrene. I recently toured a polystyrene factory (the raw product is really interesting) where they make containers for fish (dead ones ready for supermarkets etc), wine bottles and insulated wallboard etc. It was very interesting and I made a point of asking if it would release toxins if used in an aquarium. The tour guide said not. Tests had been run on it for toxicity and all sorts of other stuff. Whether they did any tests with aquariums in mind is another matter mind you! I know of a number of people who use it attached to spawning mops and others who use it as a background and have yet to hear of it causing problems in a tank. Nothing wrong with a bit of caution though and John1 has a valid point about us not being industrial chemists.
  20. Hi there and welcome. I too agree with everything the others have said - particularly the depth is a pain to work with, for the reasons mentioned, and I too would be concerned about the weight factor.
  21. Tropical Blues is owned by fishroom member Fee. Send her a PM or email [email protected]
  22. Welcome to the fishroom Justin. Have you researched the requirements needed by seahorses? They are not for beginners. Very hard to feed as they need live food - lots and lots and lots of very small live food.

    Dolomite

It wasn't the gravel Goldie - although it didn't help seeing as it was gravel meant for African set-ups so the pH kept hitting 8.0. I can kill guppies no matter what the pH!
  24. Congratulations Damon. I hope you are going to register them with the breeding scheme Those cockatoos are a great looking fish.
