  1. It can vary a lot kriber as to how many they have. First batches tend to be small. You have no way of knowing how many she ate either. They can drop fry over several hours I think. Have you plenty of places for the dry to hide? Spawning moss is ideal.
  2. Don't remind me!...she says as she rushes around finalising details and scrounging prizes.

    Fliters?

The filter you are referring to is called an undergravel filter, or ugf. Water is drawn down through the gravel where the wastes are broken down by nitrifying bacteria. This purifies the water and turns waste into fertiliser. You need a separate pump to run this filter. It is probably the cheapest option when it comes to filtration, along with box filters. These are canisters filled with filter wool etc. Next would be the internal filters which have a built-in pump, and then the external canister filters. Your choice of filter often depends on what sort of fish you have and how big your tank is. Snails are often used to clean up excess waste in a tank but they tend to poo more than they eat and can quickly overrun a tank. Quite a few fish eat snails and they will not last in a tank with pH below 7.0 as the acidic conditions eat away their shell. I have never used bivalves or mussels in a tank so can't comment on that but if they die they can pollute a tank very quickly. Do you have a cold or tropical tank? What size is it and what fish do you have?

    sick Axolotyl

Axolotls will attack each other sometimes. The foot may grow back. Keep using the antiseptic and keep the water clean.
  6. Have a happy holiday Warren and maybe see you Sunday if you get to our place before we leave on the MX5 Poker Run

    Oh. Migod

You can get dwarf cichlids too
  8. Varies greatly. It is recommended they be changed every few years. I have a couple here still going after 10 years. Should get more than you are getting out of them though. Are you using a big enough one for the tank? Is it being overworked?
  9. What??!! I thought you were taking time off and continuing on to Christchurch? Carey was looking forward to seeing you.
  10. A note of warning to those who have yet to send in their registration forms - The Great Marlborough Treasure Hunt has just been announced for the same weekend and they are expecting lots of people to come treasure hunting so accommodation will be well booked.
  11. Peter Cottle wants us to know about his club's new site www.stroodaquarist.co.uk it is still under construction but is looking good so check it out and sign the guest book

    Baby food

Egg yolk works well but can pollute the tank easily. Strain it through muslin to make it fine enough for the fry.

    Syphon

You can only make it if the 'basic' math makes sense, which it doesn't to the many.

    Baby food

Don't know about the granules Carla but what is wrong with using the green water?

    Syphon

There's something to be said for pre-made stuff. You don't have to know or understand the math!
  16. Ring me Kim as I have a lot of 30 litre barrels. The fish won't need bagging and you can keep all the water as well. Various club members use these barrels to shift fish and water - it is what they are here for. All you do is siphon the water into the barrels, catch and add the fish, move the tank, pour the water and fish back in. No plastic bags or polystyrene boxes required!
  17. One of the registration forms which arrived today pointed out that I had forgotten to put the DATES on the forms. I know it is Queen's birthday weekend so didn't think of it  As you all know, the dates of Queen's Birthday weekend are May 30 - June 2!! Please pass this information around and get those registration forms back in ASAP. If any FNZAS member wants a registration form but has not received one, or cannot get one from their club secretary, please contact me immediately and I will post one to you.
  18. Warren, My email address is incorrect. The old one was simtron@xtra, not simtrons@xtra and it still works although it would be better to use [email protected]. Remove the VP for now as I think it changed at our recent AGM (can't remember as I have been busy with conference details) but I haven't a copy of the Minutes yet to tell you who the VP is. The secretary and treasurer are both Deidre Wells, not Ken, and you have spelled her name incorrectly. Thanks
  19. Hi Bab, What is a koi goldfish? Koi are banned here but I am guessing the name for the goldfish has something to do with their colouring? As I live in the South Island I can't help you re shops in Auckland. Welcome to NZ Robin and I hope you find the fish you want too. I was impressed with Wet Pets myself when our club visited a while ago.
  20. I hear what you're saying Joze! Have been in the same position myself.
  21. We are bringing the digital camera with us goldie so will be able to take some pics for you to post. Watch this space!
  22. Perhaps there is something in your tank upsetting it. I assume the 2 came from the same tank in the same place? Seems odd if one was affected and not the other. Maybe it just needed time to adjust and you will have no further problems. I think I have heard others mention their fish doing this.
  23. Ambulia really likes good lighting so hopefully increasing it will do the trick.

    What Filter

Thanks for that John. I never thought of using one of those sprayers. Might give it a go.
  25. Looking forward to seeing them on Monday goldie
