  1. My opinion too! That is very few fish for a tank that size and it should cycle without problems. I cycled mine with 4 8cm goldfish. When it was ready, I threw the goldfish outside into a sunken bath, turned the heater on in the tank and added 36 fish around 4cm. All were very happy chappies.
  2. I agree with Ira. If you have a filter, or bubbles, breaking the water surface it will be ok but if you have a calm surface, the oil slick will be interfering with the oxygen. I seem to remember someone saying they thought it was due to too many nitrates (or ntrites, I always get them mixed up). Get some paper towel and carefully drape it on the surface. I should suck up the film. Might take several pieces of towel, depending on the size of the tank.
  3. Thanks for that link nico I am sure it will be helpful to many. One of our club members is moving this weekend. This is the third move in a couple of years - they have a 6ft tank! Takes several to lift it when empty. Our club has several 30 litre leak-proof containers they use. When the lids are on they can fall over and roll around, even be stood on, without leaking. We transport fish in them regularly. These containers are bright blue barrels, obtained from a paint shop (Resene I think) and were originally used to bring paint powder into NZ from Italy. They only needed a rinse and were ready to use. No toxicity from the previous contents. The barrels were being sold at $5 each so we bought the lot! They get used regularly by our club members.
  4. Hi Grahame, good to see you. Cess, our webmaster in charge of this site, belongs to the Upper Hutt club. Perhaps we can enthuse you and get you back into the hobby
  5. I wouldn't pay $150 for a fish that wasn't common! I am a scrooge The most I have ever paid for a fish would be around $17 and even then the moths in the wallet got agitated

    Hi from Sydney!

Welcome neighbour! I belong to a few sites both phpBB and eziboard and much prefer these ones. I have trouble with eziboard as I go to the site, it says I am logged in, it lists my name at the bottom but seems to forget I am there and I have to keep logging in to see which threads are new since my last visit! Very frustrating. Have a Malawi tank here, been set up a few months now. Very active fish! I also have a 1.2m tropical with rainbows. The apistos are beautiful aren't they? Enjoy your visits here.
  7. It appears to be a fairly regular event so I am sure you will make it to one eventually  Good luck in the exam

    Wow!

If you click on the 'fnzas.org is here' logo at the top of the page it will tell you all about us. We are an affiliation of like-minded clubs who want to see improvements and good information given about fishkeeping. Join an affiliated club and you automatically belong to the FNZAS. You get the Aquarium World magazine free (NZs only fishkeeping magazine and now coming out in colour) plus a Year Book which lists all the other members countrywide, plus a whole lot of other information. A great book to have with you when travelling. You also get to meet a lot of fellow fishkeepers.

    heya all.

Welcome fallen. Check out the Kapi-Mana as they are a real keen bunch at the moment! (not that I am implying there is anything wrong with the Upper Hutt people )
  13. My Malawi tank was doing that the other day. I have an Eheim wet/dry and an AquaClear. Where the water was returning to the tank from the AquaClear, the bubbles spread out over the water surface and didn't burst. I watched for quite a while but couldn't figure out why it was doing this. It stopped on its own later in the evening so I am still none the wiser. My tank has been running since March. I wonder if in your case it is just as the cycling progresses. Are you fishless cycling or what are you using to cycle the tank?

    Wow!

Hi Pete and welcome. Glad you found us. This site has been going over 2 years now and improving all the time as more members sign up and join in. This is the official site of the Federation of NZ Aquatic Societies but you do not have to be a member to participate here. Palmerston North has a club which unfortunately has been in recess for a year or so but I believe they are about to become active again. Andrew can certainly keep you informed of their plans.
  15. Our rock pools only have seaweed and sea lettuce. We kept a rockpool tank going for a couple of years but had to give up as it got too hot over the summer months (not that you would have so much trouble in Wgtn ) We only had a single light on it so we could see the fish.
  16. It is my understanding that seahorses are very hard to keep fed as adults and the babies would be more so. They need much smaller food than brine shrimp. Contact a public aquarium or similar place to see how they feed them. I remember visiting a place out at Island Bay I think. A laboratory of some sort and they kept all sorts of marinelife caught from the bay. They could help you.

    catfish

They will be able to get up there if they want goldie.
  19. Yeah, I'm with Pegasus on this one too I hate having to scroll sideways. Still can't help with the fish ID either.

    Hello

Welcome to the fishroom lurch. Sorry I can't offer any advice on the gobies as I have never kept them - but they are a very pretty fish. Good luck with them.
  21. Ira if you post that pic in the Community Tank CM or Fishguts is bound to be able to tell exactly what it is (assuming you haven't done this already)
  22. Caryl

    sad discus

Sorry to hear that goldie. Keep a close eye on the remaining fishes in case they start to exhibit similar problems.
  23. Caryl

    sad discus

They have been together in that tank a long time. Would one suddenly start bullying the other? Would they start to do this as one reached breeding size perhaps? I know other fish start getting aggro as they mature. Are discus the same?
  24. Caryl

    sad discus

How is the discus now goldie? Robert she has more than one discus but only this one is sick. Elevating the temperature should help. Why do you suspect hexamita?
  25. It is the African tank and the fish do eat it - but not fast enough!
