    Hi I'm Merlin

Congratulations Mandy! Are you sure they're gouramis? Working out what species some fry are can be difficult.
  2. In that case I will put more reg forms in the envelope  Looking forward to seeing you all. BTW: The motel would like as many as possible to be in the 4 to a unit (or more) if possible so we don't use up all their double units. So if you are happy to share it would be good. Just off to post them now...
  3. If you can tell me who to send the killi ones to that would be great. The list Warren gave me does not say who has what position in the club.
  4. The first 2 registrations have arrived already!
  5. I will send some to you Janey. Can I send 4 more to you Andrew? I lost track of some changes and it has been difficult with no Year Book.
  6. How could you possibly end up with a smaller lounge than you had before??
  7. Too late guys! The Kapi-Mana reg forms (4) went to Dominique. I meant to send you 2 personally Janey but I don't think I did in the end. Andrew 4 are coming to you for NZKA and the 4 for PN went to Edwards/Cowan as I was told one of them was secretary.
  8. The weekend starts with the usual get-together on Friday night at Bings Motel, 29 Maxwell Rd. Blenheim. There is a former restaurant on-site which will be our conference room for the weekend. You will be able to check-in then join other delegates and observers there for the evening. Hot drinks and juice will be available and a supper will be served. For those who did not eat before arrival there are plenty of eateries within walking distance of Bings. Choose from café style to fish and chips, pizza, Thai, Japanese, Chinese, Indian, Irish (Paddy Barry’s Pub), Italian or Cambodian. On Saturday we meet back in the restaurant to hear our guest speaker, a well known underwater photographer, Roger Thwaites. He will be showing photographs taken from dive trips around the world, plus offering a few tips for those who would like to try underwater photography for themselves. After morning tea the AGM will begin and take the rest of the day. Lunch will be served on-site. The evening meal will be at the Bamboo Garden Restaurant, a short distance down the road. After the meal you may enjoy Blenheim’s nightlife (if there is one. We have a nightclub called Goats Don’t Shave) or return to the motel and spend the evening in your unit or with others in the conference room. Computers with internet access will be set up on-site for those wanting to see the FNZAS web site and learn how to find their way around the many fish information sites which abound on the world wide web. Sunday morning starts with a talk by our webmaster, Cees Lensink, who will explain more about the FNZAS web site and give lessons to those willing to help with the site by becoming moderators (people who make sure no-one posts nasty, rude, or defamatory words in the forums) or administrators (those who add or remove information from the site in general). At 10.30am the bus will pick us up to take us on a tour of the province. The details are still being finalised but it will include a tour and tasting at Montana Wines Ltd., Dodson’s Brewery, a bar lunch at the Woodbourne Tavern and fun on board an Argosy freight plane. The evening meal will be at Springland’s Tavern Beaver’s restaurant where they offer a lovely smorgasboard. From here it is back to the motel for a party to celebrate our 50th anniversary! Plenty of prizes, raffles, give-aways and fun to be had. SEE YOU THERE!! Register ASAP as it will be first in first served with the accommodation. I am in the process of sending forms out to clubs but having difficulty with no Year Book! If anyone knows of updated club contacts since the ones posted on this site, please let me know ASAP.

    Tank pics

What have other club members got?
  10. LOTS of light on the tank and a tripod for the camera.

    Tank pics

Nice pics Andrew. I see you have the same tank stand as the one in my computer room Concrete blocks work very well - pity they aren't a bit lighter though!
  12. Are they both males? Since there are plenty of hiding places and the big one goes to such trouble finding the other, I would either try adding another, or removing the smaller one.
  13. Didn't Deidre have any?
  14. What other fish are in the tank? I have one large rainbow who keeps chasing the others occasionally but there are plenty of other fish for him to chase so no one fish gets picked on.

    Fluval broke :-(

    Not a bad idea Ira
  16. I had a lucky break yesterday. Was sitting at the computer and heard a faint buzzing noise behind me. Turned around and saw sparks coming from the multi-outlet the filters, heater and thermostat are plugged into. It then started to smell a bit. The small AquaClear I had hanging on the end of the tank as a spare had developed a small leak. The water had run down the cord, which was OK as it was looped, but more was dripping slowly off the base of the filter where the motor attaches to the plastic, straight onto the plugs! Normally the outlet isn't so close to the tank, for that very reason, but it had been bumped closer when a nearby box had been moved. If I hadn't been home I hate to think what would have happened! We unplugged it, dried it out and replugged everything back in - minus the leaking AquaClear. The multi-outlet is now well away from the tank. At the moment it is still on the floor but I will get Grant to attach it to the wall so if the tank leaks - heaven forbid! - the plugs will not get wet. Let this be a timely reminder to you all to check your plugs are not where they can get wet as water and electricity don't mix!

    Fluval broke :-(

As a further point of interest - I ended up soaking all the filter parts in a strong bleach solution to get rid of the stink. The tank was finally reassembled, rinsed extremely well of course, and put back on the tank. Today I actually did a water change and cleaned the filter. Took over half an hour to get the stupid thing pumping again! I don't think I will ever buy a Fluval again, they work very well but are a hassle to restart - even with the little primer pump. I notice it is a lot noisier than the Eheim. Just a quiet hum, but you can definitely hear it. The Eheim wet/dry makes no noise at all except for an occasional squeak it has developed recently. I think it is the piece of polystyrene stuff in the side canister that squeaks as it slides up, or down, the canister. I have to keep looking at it to make sure it is still going it is so quiet and it is sitting on the floor about 2 meters away!

    VA-380

Yes. Under the Consumer Act you should be able to get it replaced under warranty. Just remember to be polite when you contact the place you got it from . It is not their fault and sometimes things like this happen.
  19. I have not heard of them being a problem. Ones bred outside are bigger and often more colourful (possibly hardier too). Barbs and guppies are good to try outside yourself in summer. I have always meant to give rosy barbs a go. Perhaps next summer...
  20. Are you asking about the actual species of fish, the fact they were bred outdoors, or fish from that particular supplier?
  21. I forgot to ask!! Sorry about that but I had one of those days
  22. I only asked about the glasses in case it was possible others could see the vibrations but you couldn't because your eyesight wasn't as good as you thought it was. It is interesting the male does it but not the female. I will try and remember to ask the discus keepers at our meeting tonight if they have observed the phenomenon.
