Burning is a good way to make sure it is destroyed too.

I think it's salvinia too. A Class A noxious weed it is illegal to posess this species in NZ.
  3. We used to have plenty and I am trying to get them going again. Will keep looking
  4. Sorry to hear that Ira. Can't think what the problem might be as I have never had anything to do with tadpoles (except look after the kindy ones during the holidays. Put them in the goldfish tank, figured the'd be all right since they were quite large with back legs already. Next morning, no tadpoles. smiley fish). Have you asked at Animates?
  5. We are coming down to ChCh on the 25th to join the Ashburton Fish Nuts on their shop crawl. Do any of you down there know if any of the lfs have leopardfish (Phalloceros caudomaculatus) at the moment?
  6. This interesting bit of information is from the fascinating site mentioned above... While in some cases, complicated courting behavior occurs before mating, many species of frogs are known for attempting to mate with anything that moves which isn't small enough to eat! Reminded me of someone...
  7. You will hear them though!! Here is a site with all the information you need... http://allaboutfrogs.org/info/species/whistle.html

Albinos are rare but not unheard of in many animals, eels included. A few bright yellow ones have also been found but they lose the yellow as they get older. Most albinos don't survive in the wild as their lack of colour makes them stand out so they become easy prey.
  9. Hamilton is very active I understand. Rob is a regular here and he is a member. Send him a PM. They are organising a Molly Hunt at the moment.
  10. You need a web site host to put the pics in. Do a Google search for free web hosting to find one. Once you have that, and have worked out how to upload your pics, someone will give you the next step.

Hi there Meggy and welcome. My husband and I hope to go your way in a couple of weeks and meet up with the Ashburton Fish Nuts for a tour of the Christchurch petshops Saturday 25th. Should be fun.
  12. Lucky you! Does hubby get a little something extra now too? What sized tank did you get and what do you plan to put in it?
  13. Hi there and welcome to the fishroom. We don't mind being invaded, we have a number of foreigners in here, including other Aussies . I would not have thought clowns would give the congos any grief and they are both lovely fish. I also agree with the other two's suggestions re tank mates and brine shrimp.

There are a few places trying to do it commercially. HB Aquariums comes to mind. They have an awesome set-up but I am not sure if they are selling to the general public.
  15. :(

Just stop feeding them bloodworms. There are plenty of other things they can be fed.

It was something I thought I remembered reading from somewhere. I know nothing about adding o2 to aquariums but know that, as with everything, balance is the key. I wondered whether there was more oxygen at the top levels than the bottom. Besides which, when you said o2 I was thinking CO2 being added for the plants. Probably totally off the track  Having the kuhlis in the top of the plants is one thing, having them there as they appear stressed is another

It depends on where you get your water from and what gets added to it. I use water straight out of the tap as we don't have chlorine in our supply.
  18. Caryl replied to Tony's topic in Freshwater
There are so many to choose from it really is a matter of adding a fish you like Tony. One question though, why is the temperature so high? It only needs to be around 24C. Mine is actually 22.5. With a tank that size (and it sounds good, do you have pics?) I would go for medium sized fishes like gouramis or cichlids like keyholes or similar. A massive shoal of large barbs, like the golden ones, would look good too.
  19. That is certainly an interesting site with all you need to know. I have accessed it before.
  20. Guppies will tolerate cooler temperatures, not cold. In a well insulated house where the room temperature does not drop below about 16C they will survive.
  21. Welcome to the fishroom mothertrout. We are all addicts here! Don't hesitate to ask questions and never assume your question is stupid. Perhaps we will see you in the chat room some time?
  22. Hi there! Does that make you de myster?
  23. Caryl replied to killifan's topic in Aquatic Plants
There seems to be differing opinions as to whether to keep the lead on the plants or not. Personally I remove it when possible. It can restirct some plants, depending on how they grow.
  24. Caryl replied to Myst's topic in Beginners Corner
Not a requirement for the fish. It is only to make the tank look nicer and hide the cords from the heaterstat etc. It can also look a little odd depending on the wallpaper behind it . Having fish swimming past giant sunflowers can be disconcerting
  25. I think you will find most of them should survive - depending on what else is in the tank. They are looked after very well by the dad and are bigger than most other fry.
