  1. Fins crossed for you Trudy! Don't count your angels before they've hatched
  2. I am concerned. If they were angels in the tank, how did you get baby goldfish? Just kidding
  3. Congratulations! Sorry but I can't help with information
  4. Another possibility is to add extra piles under the floor where the tank is going to be.
  5. Sponge filters are great for tanks with small fry. Wow, your fish have noticed it's spring! Must be something in the water. Keep us posted on progress
  6. Even when you allow for the fact Jackx3 is speaking Aussie dollars, it sounds like a real good deal. Go for the AquaClears Jack! I have a sponge in mine and fill it up with Siporax. Never use ammo things or carbon.
  7. You could be right Alan. I just remember reading somewhere that willow was toxic to fish. Intrigued me as most streams have willows in them. Chris there is nothing wrong with having 2 heaters in the tank. They will only switch on if the temp drops below their setting so it is not costing you any more. Handy if one dies too as the other will keep going with no harm to the fishes. Just remember, if you need a heater in a hurry, pinch one from the 3ft! They aren't mini ones are they (150s)?
  8. AquaClears are easy to keep clean too, less mucking about than the canisters. I have an AquaClear 300 running on my 4ft, along with a large Eheim wet/dry unit. Like Ira, I think $20 sounds like a very small filter. I don't know the flow rates so don't know which AC does 570lph. You need at least a 300 or 500 in the AquaClears. They have it written on them starting with the mini then I think they go up as 200, 300, 500 but don't know if this refers to lph.
  9. Everyone else has answered the heater question. Driftwood: I collect mine from the Hokitika beach by the river mouth. A lot of lovely native hardwoods come down there, espcially rimu and rata, and they are already waterlogged. Can't get much on our beach as it is mostly willow and other scrappy stuff and you can't use willow in tanks as it is toxic I believe. I just give them a good rinse and a scrub and drop them in the tank. Never had a problem so far. Check the driftwood for signs of rotting. If big bits of it break away in your fingers then don't use it.
  10. Well done! Don't forget to register them when they are a month old. If you have more than 10 at that time, get the neighbour to confirm the numbers and we will believe her/him.
  11. It is recommended you change the fluoro tubes every 6 months (says she running tubes around 3 or 4 years)
  12. I was wondering how you got on boxergirl. Good to hear the plec made it at least. I am sorry to say the fighter here died, I have no idea why Hope you get the tank set up again and restocked soon. I wrote to Colin so, when you are ready to join the Dunedin club, give him a call.
  13. I must say I worry about a count who thinks he's a sexy tart but it takes all sorts I guess  I'll try to remember to be here Thursday at 8pm.
  14. My sincerest apologies but the November Aquarium World is going to be late  Our printer needs a new image transfer unit but there are none in NZ or Australia but, if we are lucky, they might turn up at the end of November. AAARRRGGGHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is not the first time we have had trouble getting consumables for our Minolta colour laser so, if anyone out there is considering buying a colour laser, I would personally not recommend a Minolta.
  15. Lucky you! Send us pics when you have it set up.
  16. I will start a new thread for this
  17. I hope you had enough left over to pay club subs!
  18. We tried a portable chiller we converted to run on mains power but they don't like to run non-stop
  19. I recognise a fellow Belgariad fan too, don't like his latest efforts though. Welcome to the fishroom polgara
  20. I am sure we could Brian - if we had a basement. They might be used to variable temps but our room sits at a steady 28 or more during the day and drops to 18 overnight at the least. The critters did not cope.
  21. Back in Sept last year. Rene was selling his fully transportable fishroom. It was a... "20ft insulated container ,wired up , 33x90litre tanks on metal stands (3 tanks high) each tanks has own floro light , gravel, back drop, under gravel filter. The air supply is via 2 commercial pumps through a central supply system. 5 other tanks of varying sizes included as are all fish plants accessories etc." It was a converted shipping container. Rene lived in Richmond at the time, so local to you. I think he might have been asking $5,000 from memory but I may be wrong there.
  22. How many and what size? Polystyrene boxes are the way to go.
